Simply Indispensable.

The definitive resource and price guide reference for the entire comic book collecting industry. Every dealer on the planet has one, and uses it as a benchmark for pricing. And even when they sell books at a different price, they always do so in reference to The Guide price (i.e. "Above Guide, " or "Below Guide.").

The values in this book are not guesstimates. They are based upon a wide survey of North American comic book dealers and collectors. At the very least this book tells you which books are more in demand and which are not.

The only criticism I have is that 3rd party graded books definitely command a price premium in the market over so-called "raw" books. The Guide should make an effort to reflect this somehow in their valuation system. Either designate that the prices are for certified grades, or raw, books.

I also believe that eBay sales of standard books should also form the guide pricing. It does account for auction sale prices, but mostly of key books.

Additionally, the people who buy the hard copy should also be given access to a digital copy.

Otherwise, this is the best Comic Book collecting reference you can own. Highly recommended.

The authority on prices ever since its inception

Ah, the Overstreet price guide. Good gosh how long have I been purchasing this tome...

Well, actually, it's been a few years, but before then it was every year since it first came out (yeah, I'm that old).

Beyond the meat and potatoes of the fully-loaded pricing by grade for every comic book known to man (and most unknown as well), the articles and market insights are well worth the time invested.

And, as always, a treasure trove of covers to look at, old and new. This book keeps getting better every year.

Now, when am I going to pull down all those white boxes and get started revaluing my collection?

Great Reference Guide

I used to buy this book every year, and the anticipation I felt was akin to when I was a kid and looking forward to the new season of Saturday morning cartoons. Years ago, I had given my old editions to thrift shops, as I drifted away from comic fandom. And whenever I wanted to find a value of a book, I'd just do an online search - it seemed so much easier and convenient - after all, it seemed the price guide kept getting heavier and the font size smaller. But now I wish I had kept those earlier editions. I had forgotten what I had been missing.

Not only is it more convenient to just flip through pages, but I can easily view key issue notations and individual issue values for each title at a glance. But the Overstreet Price Guide is much more than that. It has articles about comic book history, not just for collecting and valuation, but also the cultural aspects of the books. It is really a connection between the individual collector and the hobby at large.

Recently, especially with all the movies based on comic books, I've slowly been "returning to the fold." Buying this edition, at least for the moment, has accelerated this interest. I don't know, and actually doubt I'll reach the same level of interest in comics I had years ago, but the Overstreet Guide has certainly brought back memories and is doing its part, along with fandom related tv shows, and local conventions to re-acquaint me with the hobby.

Lots of Good Info for the Beginner

We recently bought a new house that sits on about 2.5 acres and almost every year, we buy a beef cow from someone else, have it packaged and share it with family. It's a huge money saver.

Now that I have the room, I'm very interested in raising a cow of my own but wasn't sure how hard it would be or time consuming and was having a lot of doubts so I was very happy to see this book on offer.

I found lots of good information regarding what to feed them and how to take care of them. I think having one or two cows is very viable for me. The book made it seem like it wouldn't be hugely time consuming to do. Now rather than paying someone else to raise it, I'm pretty sure I could do it on my own and I know NOTHING about animals that aren't pets. I found the book to be concise and in language I could understand. I'm sure raising a herd is harder than just one but there was information within the book that you could use regardless of how many you are wanting to raise.

I also found the section on breeds of cattle to be very informative. This book goes into pretty much everything from feeding, behavior, how to prepare a pasture, etc. I was ready to call my local vet if I had any questions but after reading, found that everything I was concerned about was covered within the book, especially making sure your cow stays healthy because since they can't talk and aren't the brightest animals, how would you tell when they need something before whatever that is gets really bad and they require a vet? The book details what to watch for. I'm feeling pretty comfortable about getting my own animal after reading.

I think this book will be a very good reference after I get the animal as well. My only concern is that I will end up getting too attached because I'll be raising just one or two rather than a herd. I think it would be easier to keep an emotional distance when dealing with lots of them rather than just one but hopefully, it won't be too hard.

I'm definitely going to be keeping this for reference and would recommend to anyone who is interested in raising cattle.

Great Coverage with Helpful Tips

This book is a great resource for not only the student of agriculture, but also the curious. The requirements, benefits and responsibilities of cattle ownership get coverage in significant detail considering the size of the text. I find the overview of the process quite interesting.

The opening chapter explores the path to a life in cattle breeding, while the remaining chapters encompass what to do once there. This thorough text includes insider tips, which make the subject even more approachable.

One would certainly require formal instruction to pursue a career in cattle breeding, but "Raising Beef Cattle for Dummies" provides such deep insight into the subject that I consider it an excellent place to start.

A good book for the very very new beginner to raising cattle. Maybe for a 4-H person just getting into it. I am the wife of a rancher and thought it would be good to know more myself. Not much new here for me.

can't go wrong with this one

If you're looking for a nice coffee-table book with reproductions of Roerich's paintings, this book will do nicely. If you're looking for a text biography of Roerich, this book will also do. It's basically a combination of the two.

Unlike many coffee table books, the text you're getting is not sparse: you're getting a respectable, critical biography, not just a load of hagiographic gushing. But that, unfortunately, is the problem. When you sit down to read through it, you've got this awkward book to hold, making it hard to curl up with this thing.

Purists might want to note that the color plates are matte. I'm no judge of paper quality, but the caliber of the reproductions didn't strike me as especially stunning. If you simply care about the quality of the color reproductions, I don't think you're going to be jumping for joy when you see this.

Smith was a builder of cities. He sought to form egalitarian, just, and open communities under God and laid out a plan for ideal cities, which he hoped would fill the world. Adopted as the model for hundreds of Mormon settlements in the West, Smith’s urban vision may have left a more lasting imprint on the landscape than that of any other American.

He was controversial from his earliest years. His followers honored him as a man who spoke for God and restored biblical religion. His enemies maligned him as a dangerous religious fanatic, an American Mohammad, and drove the Mormons from every place in which they settled. Smith’s ultimate assassination by an armed mob raises the question of whether American democracy can tolerate visionaries.

The book gives more attention to Joseph Smith’s innovative religious thought than any previous biography. As Bushman writes, “His followers derived their energy and purpose from the religious world he brought into being.” Some of the teachings were controversial, such as property redistribution and plural marriage, but Smith’s revelations also delved into cosmology and the history of God. They spoke of the origins of the human personality and the purpose of life. While thoroughly Christian, Smith radically reconceived the relationship between humans and God. The book evaluates the Mormon prophet’s bold contributions to Christian theology and situates him culturally in the modern world.

Starred Review. How should a historian depict a man's life when that man, and his religion, remain a mystery to so many 200 years after his birth? Bushman, an emeritus professor at Columbia University and author of Joseph Smith and the Beginnings of Mormonism, greatly expands on that previous work, filling in many details of the founding prophet of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and carrying the story through to the end of Smith's life. Many continue to view Smith as an enigmatic and controversial figure. Bushman locates him in his historical and cultural context, fleshing out the many nuances of 19th-century American life that produced such a fertile ground for emerging religions. The author, a practicing Mormon, is aware that his book stands in the intersection of faith and scholarship, but does not avoid the problematic aspects of Smith's life and work, such as his practice of polygamy, his early attempts at treasure-seeking and his later political aspirations. In the end, Smith emerges as a genuine American phenomenon, a man driven by inspiration but not unaffected by his cultural context. This is a remarkable book, wonderfully readable and supported by exhaustive research. For anyone interested in the Mormon experience, it will be required reading for years to come. (Oct. 10)

Joseph Smith claimed that he was visited by an angel who gave him golden plates from which he transcribed the Book of Mormon, and he had organized a church before he was twenty-five. His personal charisma and his administrative genius helped spread Mormonism throughout the Western United States, turning the sect into a legislative federation complete with social and political institutions. There were always those who thought Smith a charlatan and a fanatic, and, in 1844, at the age of thirty-eight, he was fatally shot by an angry mob. Bushman is both an emeritus professor of history at Columbia and a practicing Mormon, and his exhaustive biography carefully treads a path between reverence and objectivity, as when he investigates the phenomenon of "plural marriage"; Smith, in order to establish "a Righteous race . . . uppon the Earth," had more than thirty wives.

Both the extraordinary man and his highly distinctive doctrines receive illuminating attention in this landmark biography, published to mark the bicentennial of the American prophet's birth. A distinguished Columbia historian, Bushman stresses the boy seer's thoroughly ordinary origins--born to a hard-pressed New England farm family and denied all but the rudiments of a formal education--to emphasize the marvel of the religious revolution he brought about. Beginning with the publication of a new volume of scripture--the Book of Mormon--recounting the resurrected Christ's ministry in ancient America, that revolution eventually produced a dynamic church run by a complex lay ministry and committed to spreading its message worldwide. Though himself a practicing Latter-day Saint (Mormon), Bushman steers clear of hagiography by permitting readers to hear the voices not only of the prophet's loyal followers but also of various skeptics and adversaries. Readers see in particular detail the views of those who rose against Smith during the turbulent final years of his life, when the practice of plural marriage helped stoke a firestorm of religious conflict. Though that storm ended with the prophet's death at the hands of an angry mob, Bushman gives the slain revelator credit for the remarkable durability of the church he left behind. The title of the book is a quotation Joseph made about himself. The book is devoted to primarily telling his story. In so doing it tells a lot about the early beginnings of the church. Those who would be interested in learning about the early beginnings of the LDS church will find insight from this book. Some of the issues dealt with may need further research and study by the reader to appreciate the whole story.

Gr 10 Up—Lone Sloane finds himself, as the title suggests, adrift in solitude after his spacecraft explodes. Where most people would surely have perished, Sloane survives, managing to evade the all-consuming black hole that has seemingly erased any vestiges of his craft. In its place a stone throne emerges, thus beginning the very trippy voyages of the title character. Druillet's oversize picture book is a psychedelic fantasy reminiscent of the "Bronze Age" of comics (1970–85). His use of worm's-eye perspective, warm colors, monochromatic patterns, and various shades of gray, black, and white capture Sloane's alternating position as the "hunted" and the "one touched by the King of Gods." Readers may find themselves confused by the bizarre surrealism of the illustrations, which occasionally might cause them to lose the story's focus. There isn't much revealed about the protagonist and how he came to be regarded as the sought after "living one," nor why he is a "loner" among his kin. Perhaps the answer to these questions and more will be found during subsequent voyages. Philippe Druillet is a comics artist and writer, known for his innovative approach to visual design. In the US, he’s best known for his graphic adaptation of Michael Moorcock’s Elric hit fantasy series, Elric, the Return to Melnibone, and his work for Heavy Metal, such as City of Flowers.

The reproductions of drawings are of poor quality, and there are some questionable changes to font- not what I was looking for.

The following comments are specific to this latest 2015 re-print of the Lone Sloane. I gave this re-print two stars, because it fails to do Druillet drawings justice:

-1) When compared to the original 1973 printing, ALL the lines and edges in ALL of the pictures are blurry soft, and lacking in sharpness, as if made from slightly out-of-focus low-resolution scans.

-2) Even more disturbingly, the colors are lifeless and dull, less saturated and not as vibrant as they ought to be. The hue is frequently off, as with the page 32, for example, where you get a muddy purple-grey instead of deep dark blue found in the original printing...

These are serious issues for a comic meant to be admired primarily on it's graphic strength. It is like trying to listen to a well-regarded musical performance through a grainy low-resolution MP3 file: the enjoyment is just not there, and the whole point of re-issuing this book becomes questionable, as something essential- the intensely psychedelic atmosphere that was the prime attraction of this otherwise peculiar and strange graphic story has been lost!

The motive for this re-issue is plain and clear, as one cannot help but notice the rather obvious attempt to milk consumers for what it's worth: this new book contains only half of the original book, which is now split and will be published as two separate volumes.

Finally, and rather mysteriously, the font in all of the original text bubbles was changed- Gone is the harder to read but very characterful writing. Instead, you got a generic comics font. Unfortunately, even the famed double-spreads weren't spared. I thought their strange gothic font was an integral part of those pictures - But alas! It is an unfortunate change that is hard to rationalize- go figure what was the motive behind it?

Have I mentioned that the glossy paper is less appropriate than the original semi-gloss, as it produces veiling reflections that complicate viewing the already de-saturated pictures even further.

Overall, the new book is not what I was hoping for, and a very poor monetary value to boot, so I returned it.
Instead of this reprint, and for the similar princely sum of $20, I managed to get the original 1973 printing which is both more complete (twice as thick) and graphically superior in each and every way: better quality print, better paper, better colors, better fonts.

PS - A word about the original Druillet story: a true classic head-trip a-la Barbarella, but very different in visual style: the story is a bit crazed, but inventive, and extremely unusual in it's structure, even by the standard of the 1970's drug-induced visions like Barbarella:
"Lone Sloan" flips the conventional story-telling on it's head by starting off as fantasy, and becoming hard sci-fi. This is in opposition to almost every conventional storyline of the genre, exemplified by Jodorowski and Moebius Incal, and plethora of modern Marvel stories that start off sci-fi and become more fantasy, as powers, enlightenment and magic gets introduced.
Every visually-inclined person would do well to at least flip through Druillet drawings once.
For a comic-book connoisseur, this is a classic on par with the famed "Incal" and "Blueberry", and, thus, indispensable.
But do avoid this 2015 reissue! Hope this helps.

Beware, this has previously been published in English

The art and story is fantastic. However, I already had the Dragon's Dream edition, and didn't realize that this was the same book. (strictly speaking it's only 1/2 the same book, as the Dragon's Dream is twice as long). So if you already have an older copy don't buy this one.

Revering to the review with the complaint about the printing quality, my copy is crisp. Even under my magnifying glass it looks crisp. I have a lot of comic books with worse printing quality and I am very angry about it but this one is satisfying. Beside the overwhelming details, this comic book impresses with breathtaking pictorial composition. Druillet created with Lone Sloane an outstanding masterpiece. No one can call himself a comic geek without having this standalone milestone. Lone Sloane is gothic, psychedelic science fiction. Since 1972, the year Lone Sloane was first published, no other artist came close to the outrageous and mind-blowing drawings in this comic book. I have many comic books drawn by ingenious Artists but Druillet is a class of its one.
This new oversized edition is like a dream come true. Before, I just had an over 40 years old copy in Italian on cheap paper and too dark printed.
The 6 voyages of Lone Sloane is the king of must-haves. I want to be buried with this comic book.
