John A. Davis, now a product architect at Rackspace, became a VMware Certified Instructor (VCI) and VMware Certified Professional (VCP) in 2004. Since then, all of his work has been completely focused on VMware-based technologies. He has experience in teaching official VMware curriculum in five countries and delivering VMware professional services throughout the United States. Recently, his work has involved designing solutions based on vRealize Operations and Site Recovery Manager. He has authored several white papers and co-authored the VCAP5-DCA Cert Guide (VMware Press). He holds several advanced certifications, including VCAP5-DCA, VCAP5-DCD, VCAP5-DTD, VCAP5-CID, and VCIX-NV. He has been a vExpert since 2014. Steve Baca, VCAP, VCI, VCP, and NCDA, has been in the computer industry for more than 20 years. Owen Thomas, VCI Level 2, VCP-DCV, VCP-Cloud, VCP-DT, VCAP-DCA, has been teaching various VMware classes since 2008. His first major IT position was in an enterprise-level NOC in Louisville, Kentucky, where he started in 2000 as a backup operator and transitioned to the role of NOC analyst. Spelling error galore..

In preparation to get my VCP 6 certification, I've purchased this official study guide written by VMware gurus themselves. Suffice it to say, I feel like it's a bit of a ripoff. I had a feeling of what the contents would be like but the sad truth is, there's not much study guides in the market to prepare for this exam specifically. Therefore, I had to take a chance and good news is that at least my company will reimburse me for the purchase!

A big issue with this book is that there is a whole lot of spelling errors! And I mean very obvious errors. I read a lot of technical whitepapers and books and I have never in my life read an "official" technical materials book with this much spelling errors in it.

The second issue and one that I have the biggest gripe with is that a lot of the content seems to be copied and pasted from VMware's official Vsphere 6 Documentation website. Like literally, there are parts where word for word it looks exactly the same from the website counterpart. In the VMware's official documentation website, they actually have very good materials that cover all aspects of the exam objectives that you can download in PDF or eBook format. The problem is that it's not organized. The advantage with this study guide is that the authors presented the information so that they all align with the exam objectives so it gives you a sense of what you need to study and what objectives you need to work on if you are weak in that area. I have a feeling that if someone took the time to organize the information from all the study guides gathered from the VMware website and made it in such a way that it aligns with the exam objectives/topics, one could technically could skip this official study guide because you'll still be getting the same information along with some Google'ing around as well.

You'd think that by copying and pasting information from the website would at least somewhat make the information accurate. However, there were several instances where I caught things that did not relate to how vSphere 6 works but instead was for earlier versions! One example was the differences between a vMotion high priority vs standard priority. The book claims that if there is not enough resources to perform the former, the vMotion would fail. However, that was only the case in vSphere 4 and earlier. With vSphere 5 and later, the vMotion process would proceed regardless if enough resources were reserved.

I didn't take the official VCP 6 exam yet but will do so in about two weeks or so after posting this review. Does this study guide help? Sure, of course it did. It pinpointed some things that I needed extra work on and the inclusion of many diagrams help as well, although you should also have a lab at your disposal to see for yourself. Was it worth $45? Not really considering that majority of the information could also be had from VMware's official vSphere 6 documentation website. Basically, don't expect to get too much insider secrets or recommendations from these vSphere authors/experts and you should be fine.

Good guide overall

This book was one of my primary study tools towards the VCP6-DCV exam. I'm happy to say I passed the exam and largely credit this book for helping me catch some of the minutiae that I otherwise would have missed in the thousands of pages of VMware Technical Guides.

The book manages to present material in a memorable fashion. The Pearson Vue study software that comes with the book is also excellent.

My only two complaints are as follows:

1. The book presented concepts in a somewhat inconsistent way at times. For instance, in the chapter on VSAN and VVols, it kept bouncing between VSAN, VVols, and Multipathing, which made note taking a bit tedious.

2. The practice questions at the beginning and end of each chapter contained multiple errors, especially on the topics of Storage and Networking, in that what the book identified as correct answers, are proven wrong with both the book's own content and VMware Technical Guides.

Overall, it was an eminently useful study tool. The issues can easily be addressed through the release of errata or in the next edition.

Good solid prep book but not enough to pass.

I bought this book to supplement my studies for the VCP. It is a great book that covers all the topics of the exam. The book is largely free of errors with a few exceptions. Pearson provides updates to the errors on their site which was helpful. If you are new to VMware or lack enterprise level experience with VMware you will fail the exam if you use only this book as your study material. I have been working with VMWare for 10 years and this book was helpful in filling the gaps. For me I needed to brush up on VMware technologies that I had not used before because my jobs never purchased or pursued certain features of vSphere. So for someone who's worked in the trenches this book is perfect to put you over the hump to pass the exam. Best of luck.

I had to say something

Being dumped by the love of my life placed me at a near suicidal place, in a dank grey town in mid-winter. This is a very serious topic and should not be exploited. I looked at every book out there including some mentioned in other reviews of this book. I don't write reviews. I've never done this, but this subject is far too serious, and I sense that some authors are trying to "minimize" certain works just so they can sell their books. And they don't even identify themselves. Hmmm.THIS BOOK HELPED ME IN WAYS YOU CANNOT IMAGINE, so much so that I wrote to the authors and THEY WROTE ME BACK A PERSONAL AND SUPPORTIVE NOTE. If you're reading this and trying to figure out which book to buy for this very serious time in your life, this is an honest unpretentious book that will help you, and this topic is far too serious to play games with your own life. You'll be okay. I promise, and this book will help you. I promise.

Great Book

This book has truly become an important part in helping me in my life.

I read this book and marked it up a whole bunch and have been going back a lot, looking at specific chapters as they pertain to me. It really has been great to read and has given me a lot of new perspectives on what I have been going through.

I am recently out a relationship in which I fell head over heels in love with a girl. We started dating and to say I was on top of the world would be an understatement. We dated for a year (talked marriage and kids) and at about that point I started getting feelings that it just was not right for me. I broke up with my girlfriend and for a long time after we went back and forth with dating each other, each time me breaking up with her.

I thought I was going to be able to move forward and move on with my life and at one point we stopped talking. About a month later she informed me she was seeing someone else and my world pretty much crashed. I was in such a bad place as I went through all those feelings of "I gave up the best thing ever," to "what is wrong with me," to "I will never love again," to "how could she be with someone else," to "why could I not love her before, this pain is unbearable," etc.

To say the last few months have been hard would be an understatement. But this book has been a big part of my life and helped me get through those sleepless nights, those unending days, and I can see now that I am now on a road to recovery. It is a process and this book has helped me see how to make it through that process.

One's first true love has been so hard to get over, especially knowing I was the one who ended it every time. I could not understand why I was saying goodbye every time to the one person I loved. All I could do was try to figure out what was wrong with me, there had to be some defect within me. Then to add to the confusion even more, after all the times I said goodbye, when I found out she was with someone else, was when I really hit rock bottom. That was when I really started to question my decisions. That is when I picked up this book and started reading.

This book takes a look at things from both sides, whether you are the one breaking up or you are the one who was broken up with. I feel like in my situation I was on both sides! I have learned so much about myself and I really have started to take a turn for the better. I have setbacks, but I have to understand that I am going to have those days and the good thing is is that those days are a lot fewer and farther between than thirty days ago.

I lost my best friend, the one person that I truly opened up to and really shared my core with. It has been hard for me knowing she is out there and close to me, yet so far away in so many respects. It has been hard having the one person that I really want to talk to about all this, not there for me. It is not everyday that we lose our best friend. It is something that I have struggled with, but I have realized it is something I have to deal with. This book shows you how to work through that.

I know I have a ways to go, but I am progessing. This book has been an amazing help to me as I have truly had the hardest time of my life. I even emailed the authors and they got back to me right away, what a great feeling!

I would recommend this book highly to those who are working on mending their heart, no matter what the situation.

Wholly Heart

This is the only book that I can wholly endorse for both men and women. For one thing, the cover isn't pink-whoever said you can't judge a book by its cover wasn't scanning shelves for breakup books. Also, it's written by two men so it doesn't have that "you go girl!" tone that one often finds in relationship books written for women (in other words, most relationship books.) The other reason I highly recommend this book to anyone is that it's the only breakup recovery book I know of that is written for any person in the throes of heartbreak, including the person who ended the relationship. Because of this, the book is very balanced and objective, with absolutely no blame-laying or victim-playing rhetoric in any of the thirty short chapters.

Overall, I found How to Heal a Broken Heart in 30 Days extremely pragmatic, organized, and well written. It's sympathetic without being touchy-feely and it's serious without being boring. Good work, Bronson and Riley! You go, guys!

On day 14, Bronson and Riley recommended a two-week checkup to "acknowledge the truth." I don't think they meant that I should go for coffee with my ex, burst into tears, and hurl accusations while nosy Starbucks patrons looked at him like he was the Antichrist-but that's pretty much what I did and, let me tell you, it didn't help much. Two weeks is too soon to schedule an exit interview because the pain is still awfully fresh. I think it's much better to wait and "acknowledge the truth" when the truth is that you no longer give a damn.

Good book, accurate title.

I recently read this book nearly cover to cover. If you are seeking a good working introduction into tunnel construction, I think this is a great place to start. I provide the following thoughts:

- Pay attention to the book description provided by Amazon about what the book covers. If you are an engineer looking for a technical introduction into actual tunnel design/engineering this isn't it. However, I do think the review description quote "Clear, concise, and heavily illustrated, this is a vital text for final-year undergraduate and MSc students and an invaluable starting point for young professionals" is accurate - but don't forget the words "starting point."

- It begins with what I thought was a very good historical development leading to current practices before moving on to tunneling related geotechnology.

- It covers the traditional methods of drill and blast, road header, and TBM. It also briefly deals with micro-tunneling and boring large diameter vertical shafts. Tunnel lining techniques are also reviewed.

- Personally, I think the text spent a disproportionate number of pages covering/endorsing the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) with heavy emphasis on using shotcrete to line the tunnel, perhaps to the loss of explaining how NATM is any different from other techniques that inherently use the rock mass for tunnel support.

- Extensive references and bibliography to provide a launch point for further inquiry.

- While some of the above might sound pretty negative, I think this is an excellent and very thorough primer for those who already have some technical education and need or want to know more about tunneling.

The particular decomposition studied in this book is the decomposition of the total sum of squares matrix into between and within cluster components, and the book develops this decomposition, and its associated diagnostics, further than I have seen them developed for cluster analysis before. Overall, the book presents an unusual, perhaps even rather idiosyncratic approach to cluster analysis, from the perspective of someone who is clearly an enthusiast for the insights these tools can bring to understanding data.

Very USEFUL

This book gives a smooth, motivated and example-rich

introduction to clustering, which is innovative in many aspects.

Answers to important questions that are very rarely addressed if

addressed at all, are provided.

Examples:

(a) what to do if the user has no idea of the number

of clusters and/or their location - use what is called intelligent k-means;

(b) what to do if the data contain both numeric and categorical

features - use what is called three-step standardization procedure;

(c) how to catch anomalous patterns, (d) how to validate clusters, etc.

Some of these may be subject to criticism, however some motivation is always

supplied, and the results are always reproducible thus testable.

The book introduces a number

of non-conventional cluster interpretation aids derived from a data

geometry view accepted by the author and based on what is referred

the contribution weights - basically showing those elements of cluster

structures that distinguish clusters from the rest. These contribution

weights, applied to categorical data, appear to be highly compatible

with what statisticians such as A. Quetelet and K. Pearson were developing

in the past couple of centuries, which is a highly original and welcome

development. The book reviews a rich set of approaches being accumulated

in such hot areas as text mining and bioinformatics, and shows that

clustering is not just a set of naive methods for data processing but

forms an evolving area of data science.

I adopted the book as a text for my courses in data mining for bachelor

and master degrees.

Clusters of Data, Not Micro Computer Clusters

First, understand that the type of clustering being discussed in this book is the statistical technique of finding clusters of data in a collection, where the collection is typically a database. This is not about clustered micro computers being used to work on big computational tasks as though it is a supercomputer.

Clusters of customers is a key area in data mining and knowledge discovery. You are usually trying to find groups of people with similar buying patterns but not necessarily identical. For instance if you have a group of people that have purchased a book on PHP, you might want to try to sell them a book on MySQL, or Apache, or Linnux. These programs fit together, but are not identical. Still the customer who purchased the PHP book is more likely to want a MySQL book than he is to want an audio CD of a murder mystery.

In this book, two of the most popular clustering techniques, K-Means and Ward's Method are presented. They are presented for a reader interested in the technical aspects of data mining as a theoretician or a practitioner. It is intended (the author says) that the material be useful to a reader with no mathematical background beyond high school. But the author also says, it might be of help if the reader is acquainted with basic notions of calculus, statistics, matrix algebra, graph theory and logic. (The author went to a different high school than I).

Clustering is described in this book to be used in a wide variety of applications, most of which are oriented to discovering social patterns, biological taxonomies, machine learning, etc. The book discusses the various techniques that have been developed and gives examples where they have been used in a wide variety of applications.
