Do you mind me mentioning that this book could change the world culture and save all of us if people would just read it? Used to think Riane Eisler's SACRED PLEASURE was the most important book I've ever read. Now I'll put Barbara Mor and THE GREAT COSMIC MOTHER as the best and most important book I've ever read.
Mor takes us back to the real, true human culture and nature --- about how women originated human social life --- as opposed to how men have destroyed human existence over the last several thousand years.
Imagine how futile it is to try and re-orient human relationships and society wi†hin the context of male dominated 'cults' namely Judaism, Christianity and Islam. We all should read Mor's book and have the courage to stand up for all that she teaches us.

This is a fabulous book for busy people looking to change their mindset or simply improve their brains. A year's worth of powerful ideas, with one exercise per week, that will take no more than a few minutes a day. I've already noted down some that really resonated with me and will help me achieve some of my larger goals.

Immediately useful Power Tools in this Book! I had previously purchased the "Untapped Power of You" audio set after listening to Dr. Pillay on a webinar, and I got the Total Brain Makeover book thru my affiliation with my online community. I highly recommend the book and the workbook is a must for you to take Action on using these brain skills. The power of success comes in taking the ACTION to write down your new "thinking" and that starts momentum! We all know it takes practice to form good habits. The "how to" implementation of this new brain science research was very beneficial: using Imagery correctly, how to tap into and increase your Innovation capabilities ( a valuable skill to strengthen and unleash) and better problem solving. Once a week make an appointment with yourself and feel great about moving your life forward using these tips and techniques. I am suggesting it to my three adult offspring who have diverse careers: Doctor, Consultant and Technology Manager. So whoever and whatever you do it can be useful!

Dr Fifield is married with three children and lives in Winchester. He holds a degree in Business Studies as well as an MBA and a PhD in Marketing Strategy, both from Cranfield University. He was elected a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing (FCIM) in 1988, an elected member of CIM Council 1999-2001 and the CIM International Board of Trustees 2002-2004.Paul was appointed Visiting Professor at Southampton University School of Management in 2006. He is currently President of the CIM Southern Region and a Fellow of the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufacturers and Commerce (FRSA). Over thirty years of listening, watching, learning and applying academic and strategic thought to marketing has created a fertile mind which Paul brings to his customers, his writing and his teaching. He listens watches learns and applies the best of his vast knowledge to help his clients' organisations align themselves to the market they wish to serve. Only after 20 years is the market segmentation approach that was born out of his PhD thesis coming of age; and forming the foundations of some competitive and exciting new market strategies.

the basics, made easy

i'm a full time mom and nursing student, i ordered this book to review in between my first and second year of an associates rn program. i never EVER write reviews for products but i'm really pleased with this book. it's incredibly easy to read and it's helped to reinforce the basics of med-surg nursing. i would recommend this book to anyone looking to review, anyone who is new to nursing or anyone who is struggling in nursing school. this book may not help you ace your test, but it will definitely help you pass. my favorite feature of the book are the "memory joggers" which are little tips to help you memorize concepts. for instance, when explaining the difference between inter- and intra-cellular they remind you that intracellular means inside the cell, just like an intravenous catheter goes inside the vein, whereas intercellular means between the cells like an interstate road that travels between several states.

An RN out of practice

I know that many people reading this will be nursing students looking for a way to pass med-surg. I feel ya. Been there, done that (through tears!)

I stepped away from nursing after one year for financial reasons (I found a non-nursing job that paid MUCH more). For the record, I strongly discourage anyone from doing this! When I came back... TWO years later... I (rather foolishly) felt confident. Nursing is like riding a bike right? You can't really forget how to be a nurse right? I mean, I passed NCLEX with 75 questions, after all. I'm.. smart.

Face palm.

Long story short.. I forgot. A lot. Well, maybe not forgot.. It was somewhere in my mind that I couldn't access :) I felt like a new grad when I stepped back on the floor.
This book has been SUPER helpful. It took me awhile before I gave in and bought this book (I mean. It's a book for students right? I'm not a student... at least not a traditional one) But I'm happy I finally purchased it.

It gives me a ton of confidence because I realized I know a ton of stuff in this book... but it's still a refresher to things I have forgotten, or haven't seen in awhile. I'll just pick it up and start reading and highlighting things whenever I get the time. Because I'm not learning this for the first time, and its a refresher, it's pretty easy to get through. I pass over things I know I don't see in my practice and focus on the things I do.

So, that's my experience. Is the book good? Yes. Is it ... incredibly easy to understand? Yes. Will it help with nursing school? That I don't know. I know that I personally didn't use this in nursing school. Sure it may help you understand concepts but... in my opinion, you should probably focus on you instructor's lectures and the required text book.

What I do know is that this booked has helped this RN with a little refresher and to gain back some confidence. Maybe it'll help you, maybe it won't.

I would suggest looking through this book at your local book store to see if it's something you'd like, but purchasing on Amazon for the better price.

About the Author

Kenneth A. Kim, Ph.D., is associate professor of finance at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo. Kim is coauthor of the CFA Institute’s “body of knowledge” material pertaining to corporate governance. During 1998 and 1999, he worked as a senior financial economist at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington, DC, where he worked on a wide variety of corporate finance and governance issues, including mergers and acquisitions regulations. His primary research interests include corporate finance and corporate governance. His research has been highlighted in the financial press including The Wall Street Journal, The Financial Times, and BusinessWeek. He has been published in the Journal of Finance, the Journal of Business, the Journal of Corporate Finance, and the Journal of Banking and Finance, among other leading journals. He recently coauthored a review paper on international corporate governance for the journal Corporate Governance: An International Review. Kim is also coauthor of Infectious Greed and the textbook, Global Corporate Finance. 

 

John R. Nofsinger, Ph.D., is associate professor of finance at Washington State University and author of Investment Madness, The Psychology of Investing, Investment Blunders, and coauthor of Infectious Greed. Widely acknowledged as one of the world’s leading experts in investor psychology and behavioral finance, he is frequently quoted in financial media including The Wall Street Journal, Fortune, BusinessWeek, SmartMoney, Bloomberg, and CNBC, as well as other media from the Washington Post to Wired.com. A decade ago, the term corporate governance was largely academic jargon. Today, the term is familiar to almost everyone. Unfortunately, its familiarity in our society comes about because revelations and news of corporate misdeeds have become a part of our daily lives. Enron and WorldCom, to give two well-known examples, engaged in misdeeds that led to their eventual downfall. Along the way, many shareholders lost their wealth and thus their faith and trust in corporate America. Why weren't these and other firms monitored more closely? Why did the managers misbehave? Why weren't their actions caught earlier by the boards of directors or by the auditors? Why didn't financial analysts and credit agencies warn the public? Where were the regulators? Now, everyone from mistrusting shareholders to bandwagon-jumping politicians is calling for better ways to monitor corporate America.

Why is corporate governance important? The goal of every firm is to increase its shareholders' wealth. However, the firm's value diminishes when it does not have the trust of its shareholders. The entire economy suffers when trust is broken. Effective corporate governance can instill confidence, and thus trust, in our companies and markets.

Believe it or not, we already have an extensive system of corporate governance. The system has never been perfect, but we have only begun to notice it. Now, the media regularly discusses corporate governance, and it is also discussed in every business school around the world.

INTENDED MARKET

This textbook, the first of its kind, provides an overview of our corporate governance system. The textbook can be used as an important supplement for (a) any corporate finance class, (b) an accounting class, (c) a variety of management classes, such as strategy, ethics, and/or especially business and society, and (d) a business law class. It is appropriate for both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

In addition, this text is sufficiently self-contained to be used as the sole text in an MBA module specifically focusing on corporate governance. The book can also be used for executive training programs and to this end can serve as an important reference for executive and academic libraries.

ORGANIZATION AND APPROACH OF THE TEXT

The text begins with an overview of the U.S. corporation. In the first chapter, we lay out the reasons why effective corporate governance is needed. In general, we believe that there are eight basic ways in which corporations can be effectively monitored. As such, after the first chapter, the rest of the book is organized into eight chapters. Every chapter is organized in the same way, and each chapter is self-contained. Chapters begin with a detailed overview of the monitor or monitoring mechanism and then highlight potential problems. Real-world examples are used to illustrate these problems. At the end of each chapter, we provide Questions that are based on the chapter reading, and we also offer Exercises that students can do to further their understanding of the chapter material.

While this textbook can be used in many ways in the classroom, one that works well is to use the contents of one or two chapters as the basis of discussions in a seminar-style format, where the instructor serves as facilitator. Outside class, students can subsequently work on Exercises based on those chapters and use them for the basis of discussions for the next class meeting, at which they serve as facilitators.

Excellent introductory book on CG

This is an easy to read, well laid out book that is very straightforward and practical. It covers most of the crucial areas of corporate governance in 90 pages. I'm using this book for my undergraduate course on Corporate Governance course. The best part of the books is a number of examples from the corporate world that make the reading very interesting. Though I use other book as references, this book gives me the starting point on a topic.Thanks to the authors for their good work.
I strongly recommend this book anyone who is interested in corporate governance.

Incredible Value for the Information it Holds

I had to purchase this book for a Corporate Governance class I'm taking. Originally, I was upset at the $40 sticker price. In retrospect, this book is bargain basement in comparison to it's informational value. I reference this book all the time now! If you are new to investing, or would like to understand better how corporations and their boards function, this book offers an incredibly unbiased and informative analysis. It's very easy to read, and it gives a great perspective to the corporate scandals of the past decade. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for writing this book, Kenneth and John.

It is a good book regarding the general themes one should consider when reviewing governance issus for a board of directors for a public company. The book contains a number of real life examples of company boards from Enron, WorldCom, Yahoo and Disney to name a few, which are very helpful to put some of the issues into context. Easy to read and to comprehend.
