The Truth: An Uncomfortable Book About Relationships, by Neil Strauss

This is not a journey that was undertaken for journalistic purposes. It is a painfully honest account of a life crisis that was forced on me by my own behavior and its consequences.

"As such, it requires sharing a lot of things I'm not proud of—and a few things I feel like I should regret a whole lot more than I actually do. Because, unfortunately, I am not the hero in this tale. I am the villain."

So begins Neil Strauss's long-awaited follow-up to The Game, the funny and slyly instructive work of immersive journalism that jump-started the international "seduction community" and made Strauss a household name—revered or notorious—among single men and women alike.

In The Truth, Strauss takes on his greatest challenge yet: Relationships. And in this wild and highly entertaining ride, he explores the questions that men and women are asking themselves every day:

  • Is it natural to be faithful to one person for life?
  • Do alternatives to monogamy lead to better relationships and greater happiness?
  • What draws us to the partners we choose?
  • Can we keep passion and romance from fading over time?

His quest for answers takes him from Viagra-laden free-love orgies to sex addiction clinics, from cutting-edge science labs to modern-day harems, and, most terrifying of all, to his own mother.

What he discovered changed everything he knew about love, sex, relationships, and, ultimately, himself.

Searingly honest and compulsively readable, The Truth just may have the same effect on you.

If The Game taught you how to meet members of the opposite sex, The Truth will teach you how to keep them.

Review
“The guy who wrote The Game and lived The Game searches for love and learns that it’s way, way harder. And funnier.” (Joel Stein, Time magazine)

“A brutally honest and emotionally exhaustive account of his search for sexual freedom...Yes, there are orgies and swinger parties, but there are also far more intense discussions about the meaning of intimacy and the underlying causes of sexual behavior.” (Booklist)

“[Strauss] charms us with confessions of his screwed-up childhood and the many idiotic beliefs and mistakes that have plagued him, then upsells us on the notion that we can be masters of the universe-and he can teach us how. Color me seduced.” (Laura Miller, Slate)

“The Truth is fantastic...In the course of exorcising his pickup artist demons, Strauss learns and exposes the barriers to intimacy that so many of us are carrying around. If you’ve struggled with monogamy, or loved someone who has, this book is revelatory.” (Chicago Tribune)

“The epiphanies revealed are simultaneously incredibly obvious and richly profound... I want you to read this book. I want your partners to read this book. More than that, I want you to think critically about what it says about you and the world around you and your romantic relationships.” (Grantland)

The Most Entertaining Book You'll Read on Relationships
By Mofessor
The Truth starts with an archetypal trajectory—boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy goes on quest to win girl back—but becomes something curlier and less predictable as it goes along.

With lashings of hedonism and debauchery thrown in for good measure, The Truth is based on Strauss’ mission to discover whether monogamy, faithfulness, and commitment make sense in the modern world. The book is as high spirited as you might expect from someone who wrote The Game, and delves into the underpinnings of sex, relationships and their effect on life, love, and family.

Straddling the line between damning expose and redemption story, there are many times Strauss stares lustfully at self-annihilation. But to its credit, The Truth is not another preachy, earnest treatise on the dangers of sex, nor is it a sentimental journey to 12-step redemption. There have certainly been enough of those. Rather this is a study in how men and women relate to each other, and what it truly means to be in relationship with somebody. Like all the best books, as Strauss swerves between libertine and committed partner, we are simultaneously wincing and somehow wishing we were in the middle of it.

Timeo Danaos et dona ferentes
By KVD
Timeo Danaos et dona ferentes

“I fear all Greeks, even those bearing gifts”

-Vergil, the Aeneid

This book is interesting mostly as a character study of its author, Neil Strauss. I read The Game and found fascinating the extent to which he craved respect and admiration from others, and to feel superior to them. The whole book was an exercise in power, in letting everyone know that though he wasn’t good-looking, he was smart enough to manipulate women into sleeping with him anyway, cool enough to socialize with celebrities without being star struck, and talented enough to write for influential publications like the NY Times.

In this book, too, there is no doubt that Strauss is a master manipulator. He writes about feeling dorky, or ashamed, inviting our sympathy and drawing us into the story, making us care. Then he “shows” us that he’s actually not a dork by having lots of threesomes with women, because most people think that having a threesome in itself makes you cool. But now he’s inside our heads, the place he most longs to be – in control of our thoughts and emotions (or so he hopes).

So one of the things about this book is that it is structured like Homer’s Odyssey. Though Strauss mentions Odysseus and James Joyce’s Ulysses, he never explicitly communicates that he actually models the book on the epic poem itself – this is because he wants to feel smarter and more cultured than the people reading his book – it’s his own little private joke on us, to make him feel powerful. And I suppose he thinks that he’s impressing those of us who do get the allusions (witches and guides and siren songs for example) and cute little references (he names his dog Hercules).

The Odyssey was a great poem, but it was also an incredibly misogynistic one, and one of its functions was to reaffirm and perpetuate the idea that women are objects fulfilling different roles in a man’s life – dutiful wife, seductive but deadly sorceress, nymphomaniac, ball-busting bitch. Though Strauss claims to come to the conclusion that women should be viewed differently today, the way he writes about the women in his book treats them in pretty much the same way that Homer did millennia ago. Use, discard, repeat. I looked up photos of him and his wife, and it’s clear he hasn’t broken this pattern with her. She’s 15-20 years his junior, clearly less educated than he is, a multiple plastic surgery victim, with a heavily made-up, injected face. She is the picture of American female insecurity. In a picture I saw of them together, he stands above her on a staircase, dressed like some hipster professor, his hand on her body in a proprietary way. She wears – I kid you not – little kid sneakers with sloppily tied laces, cutoff shorts, and a sweatshirt with an ice-cream cone print. The pouty look on her face thinly disguises her fear and insecurity. Equals, yeah.

Something I remember from Agatha Christie books is Miss Marple’s simple but astute insight that a major problem with most people’s way of thinking is that they just believe everything that they’re told. In reality, sometimes what others say is true, but more often than we might guess, it’s not; either because they’re mistaken or simply because they are making it up. Much of “The Truth” is actually not the truth, it’s words that Strauss put together in order to elicit a certain reaction from his readers. To give just one example, when he forms his “harem” of three women (using that word is another attempt to impress us) he would have us believe that the women have never met before or even spoken or emailed each other. Yet it makes no sense that they wouldn’t have communicated at all before moving into a house together – it’s simply unbelievable. One of the women is very smart and critical, yet he has her regularly fighting with the others for the privilege of sitting next to him in the front seat like a child. I don’t think this happened, it’s simply too out of character for Veronika – or if it did, then his depiction of her is inaccurate. And then he would have us believe that it is only after the failure of the harem experiment did it dawn on him that it wasn’t fair of him to expect them not to have sex with other men while he is able to sleep with other women. Of course it’s not fair, and I kept waiting for him to address it during that section, but he pretends that it didn’t even occur to him until later when he has some big epiphany. Is the title of the book another of Strauss’ private jokes at our expense? In other words, is he merely a narcissist, or is he a full-on sociopath? I don’t know. But there are dozens of times in the book where he is clearly being disingenuous, as anyone with some critical thinking skills can perceive.

Going back to the Odyssey: Of all the Greek characters fighting the Trojan War, Odysseus was the smart one. Not muscled like Achilles or powerful like Agamemnon, but clever and conniving. He uses the power of his words and his wit to get what he wants. This is how Strauss would like to see himself. In his pathology, the way he feels worthy and powerful is by convincing others that he is smarter and cooler than everyone else. This is why he is constantly making little mean comments about people – it reminded me of the negging thing from The Game. Though he claims to be a new, wise person by the end of the book, his methods are the same as ever.

There are so many other things I noticed, like the fact that he never mentions the enormous role money and power play in relationships between men and women. Instead, he has an endless string of epiphanies and clichés that he unloads on us for 400 pages. He is the oh-so-wise dispenser of valuable advice that will blow our minds and change our lives for the better. But he’s no Homer, no Joyce.

Odysseus created the Trojan horse, which the gullible Trojans happily brought inside their city walls. Strauss has this little puppy, which he wants you to swallow hook, line, and sinker. No longer content with just having power over the poor saps who loved The Game and naïve girls at bars, now he craves the admiration of the educated. He’s shed his purple-on-purple ensembles and now wears glasses and sweaters – smart people clothes. I suppose his frenetically working mind will never truly be satisfied, even if he does fool some “intellectuals” out there. I wonder what he’ll come up with next. OK this was really long but I feel better now.

The Review: A Woman's Unexpected Journey of Reading The Truth
By Cathy
I remember stumbling across the author's other book, The Game, a few years ago. I'm a woman and the description of the book immediately made me think of this womanizing ex-coworker of mine, who used to brag about his conquests as if he's reaping the rewards of the unresolved daddy issues of these beautiful women. And it all worked because he knew a thing or two about manipulation and games. Needless to say, I rolled my eyes and move on with my online book shopping never expecting to read any of his books. Recently, an author I do like and subscribe to, sent an email about this book and bits and pieces from the book. I got a bit intrigued and decided to purchase this to diversify my book collection, which is starting to look lopsided subject-wise. When the book arrived, I started to read it and couldn't put it down.

The Truth is intriguing, funny, heartfelt, sometimes annoying and whiny, sometimes makes you want to go up to the author and smack him upside his bald head, and other times you root for him, empathize, and sympathize. And truthfully, you want the happy ending. It is a roller coaster ride of monogamy, psychotherapy, various alternative relationships, orgies, and harems. The author has the writing ability to take you on a journey with him as he bares the entirely human side of him, flaws and all. He is not always like-able but you stick around to see what happens to him. And sprinkled throughout the book are some interesting situations that you wouldn't otherwise witness, some thought provoking questions, and bits and pieces about attachment theory and psychotherapy that the reader can think about and look into while reading this book.

The author has a simplistic style of writing and it is an enjoyable book to read. However, there are times his self-deprecating humor goes too far and it can become self-loathing. He sometimes put himself in situations that are obviously bad and selfish but he does it anyway, other times he's this awkward guy that starts to annoy you, or he whines and self loathes for pages and you just want to swiftly kick his behind. Then you realize, this is a book about one man's journey in figuring himself out and what type of relationship he wants to have in his life so he's not going to get his poop together until he figures some things out. Along the (mis)adventures of Neil Strauss, you do get some laugh out loud moments, some eye opening moments, and some thought provoking moments. I never thought I would say this but I would recommend reading this book.

Grade 1-4-After a rough start, and a brief internment in a mail box, Socks the cat has landed on his feet. He belongs to the Brickers-a young couple who dote on him. Then a baby arrives in the household and Socks discovers that the people he'd trained so well no longer consider him the center of their universe. This is devastating, but eventually he finds a new place that everyone can be happy with. This is an hilarious book by Beverly Cleary (Morrow, 1973), told from the cat's point of view, and Neil Patrick Harris does a slam-bang job of presenting it. He provides voices for each character but, more importantly, he reads the story with humor and expression, bringing it to life. Listeners feel a kinship with Socks and root for his success, even while acknowledging his foibles. Both children and adults with roar with laughter at Sock's antics and cringe at his misdeeds. This is a great production that deserves to be enjoyed by a wide audience.

High-quality beginner-to-intermediate Tableau book
By Dimitri Shvorob
Wishing to learn Tableau, I downloaded an evaluation copy of Tableau Desktop, viewed about 20 (high-quality and very helpful) videos in the "Tableau Training & Tutorials" section of tableau.com, and finally ordered a batch of Tableau books from Amazon - Amazon.co.uk, in my case - with the intention of reviewing the alternatives and leaving one or two titles for further study.

The contenders included:
"Tableau Data Visualization Cookbook" by Nandeshwar, Packt, 172 pages, £24 for a new paperback
"Creating Data Stories with Tableau Public" by Ohmann and Floyd, Packt, 222 pages, £23
"Rapid Graphs with Tableau 8" by McDaniel, Apress, 252 pages, £29
"Learning Tableau" by Milligan, Packt, 340 pages, £33
"Communicating Data with Tableau" by Jones, O'Reilly, 334 pages, £18
"Tableau for Dummies" by Monsey and Sochan, Wiley, 352 pages, £22
"Tableau Dashboard Cookbook" by Stirrup, Packt, 336 pages, £29
"Tableau 9: Official Guide" by Peck, McGraw-Hill, 352 pages, £24

"Tableau Data Visualization Cookbook", "Creating Data Stories with Tableau Public" and "Rapid Graphs with Tableau 8" were eliminated first, each one a decent book "dominated" by a better one - then the low-quality "Tableau Dashboard Cookbook" left in disgrace.

The remaining contenders split into (a) good books for Tableau beginners - "Communicating Data with Tableau" and "Tableau For Dummies", and (b) beginner-to-intermediate Tableau books - "Learning Tableau" and "Tableau 9: Official Guide" - deeper, but, for different reasons, not as beginner-friendly.

Now, "Learning Tableau" is a decent book (a) crippled by its no-frills, black-and-white looks, and (b) spending much of its page count on beginner things, which could be picked up from the much nicer beginner-friendly titles, but (c) offering best-available coverage of table calculations and a number of tips and tricks. "Tableau 9: Official Guide" stands as the stronger choice, a polished and substantial book which may or may not be used as one's "gateway" to Tableau - I would recommend starting with "Tableau For Dummies" or "Communicating Data with Tableau" - but is a must as one's second Tableau book.

UPD. Add "Tableau for Healthcare" to the list of good beginner titles. Do not start learning Tableau with "Tableau 9: Official Guide" - you will appreciate it if/when you progress.

PS. Should you consider doing Tableau certification in the future, be warned: you have six months to take the exam. The warning is easy to miss - compared with that you get when taking a Qlik or Microsoft cert exam with Pearson VUE - and the exam's shelf life is half as long as Pearson's, as if missed deadlines (and free money for Loyalist, Tableau's no-name testing partner) were part of the business plan. I unwittingly missed the deadline - as it happens, by a single day - and was told to get lost by both Loyalist and Tableau. I have had a chance to observe Qlik's response to a similar customer request, and that was simply helpful; Tableau's, on the other hand, was North Korea meets Kafka. Don't get into this situation.

Stay Away: Takes Away Almost All Usefulness as an eBook.
By Reluctant Technologist
I knew before purchasing this Kindle Book that 4th edition physical copies can be purchased for under $5. I also know that this book covers a bunch of dead authors and thinkers, not exactly a rapidly changing field making each edition iterative at best; so i get it, I understand the inherent racket in making a new version every few years that students will be forced to buy at the university book store (vs a second volume covering additional subjects since the first edition). That said, I was willing to pay $70 in order to have a useful and highly portable reference volume. I expected a fully featured "Kindle Book" at this price. I am astounded by how little effort was put into the creation of this electronic version.

First and foremost, I can't read this "Kindle book" on a Kindle! Not even on my iPad, Which leaves me with my 7lbs laptop as the most portable option.

Second, even as a desktop/laptop only ebook it's a poor one at that. The pages don't reflow or resize, I can only zoom in and zoom out. Its nothing more than a high-priced pdf. And even then, there should at least be some of those nice pdf options such as clickable content in the table of contents to jump to corresponding sections or links in the index to their corresponding sections of the book. Dollars to doughnuts I bet someone at the publishing company clicked "Save As pdf" and sent it over to Amazon as the extent of the care and attention this content received as an electronic publication. It is clear that much more care, time, and attention was paid by the publishing company on how to saddle this book with onerous limitations.

I don't need an expensive and yet non-portable, featureless non-kindle kindle book, I'll just buy a physical copy of the 4th edition for $1.89 plus 3.99 for shipping.

Wordy. That's what I would call this book. The content seems good. The practice problems are managable. Covers large amount of material. A one semester college course could expect to cover about a third of it.

Introduction to Functional Programming Systems Using Haskell (Cambridge Computer Science Texts), by Antony J. T. Davie

Functional programming, is a style of programming that has become increasingly popular during the past few years. Applicative programs have the advantage of being almost immediately expressible as functional descriptions; they can be proved correct and transformed through the referential transparency property. This book presents the basic concepts of functional programming, using the language HASKELL for examples. The author incorporates a discussion of lambda calculus and its relationship with HASKELL, exploring the implications for parallelism.

Review
"...a very readable and understandable introduction to functional programming. It provides many concrete programming examples written in Haskell and discusses several design principles that seem to be unique to functional programming. I would recommend this book to all professional software developers for its discussion of software design using higher-order functions and streams. The book is perfect for an undergraduate course on functional programming. Haskell compilers are available from the research community, so students can get hands-on experience. Graduate students should be able to read this book on their own for an introduction to functional programming, the lambda calculus, polymorphic types, and combinatory logic." Excellent Introduction
By D. Grady
Davie's book is aptly named; although he briefly outlines the important syntax of the Haskell language, this is not intended to be "How to Program in Haskell." This book is an introduction to the ideas of functional languages rather than a tutorial on the nuts and bolts of programming. As a result, many of the techniques of programming in Haskell are presented, but in the broader context of his explanation of functional programming rather than in the more narrow, "In Haskell, you must do x and y to accomplish z" sense. I thought that this was very effective; although I have used functional programming systems in the past this was the first time I had read a clear presentation of their theory and history. Parts of the book are very dense and make for heavy going, but overall I think Davie has done a very good job of introducing the reader to the idea of a functional programming language.

Interesting language
By wiredweird
The Haskell programming language is part of the backlash against "big" languages such as Ada and C++. Although its syntax is not (not necessarily) like Lisp, it follows in the Lisp tradition of maintaining a tight bond to its roots in the formal logic of mathematics. And, like Lisp, it presents itself as a strict functional language.

Haskell has versatile syntax, allowing many different representations of any expression. It also supports high-order functions, or functions of functions. You'll also find a Prolog-like pattern matching facility (without the full capacity of Prolog's unification engine), which enables some kinds of overloading. The language supports "modules" as well, a limited kind of scoping mechanism intended to support programming in the large.

If "functional" programming is a term you haven't heard before, it means that, ideally, a program runs entirely in terms of expression evaluations without side effects - the program has no state except for transient state on its stack. This ultimately makes it a poor match to the real world. Even the ideas of storing a Haskell program on disk and holding its output pixels on screen violate the stateless paradigm, since that storage would be long-lived state. In the end, a functional programming language must violate its stateless purity to be relevant to commercial problem solving, or must leave state management to some part of the system outside of the language. The latter doesn't really solve the problem of state, it simply pushes the problem around - i.e. to some other programming language.

Haskell is an interesting exercise in language design, embodies many useful concepts from formal logic, and gives up many of the features that make it difficult to reason about programs in rigorous ways. It may have given up too much, though. When I try to picture using its techniques to solve systems of linear equations, write device drivers, or process a payroll, I end up with a very unpleasant image.

An great second book for students of Haskell
By Samuel Danielson
Conceptually the content of this book can be divided into three major sections. The first is a well constructed overview of Haskell which, though not suitable as a primary tutorial, is organized in a building block style that clearly explains the core concepts of the language and their syntax. Examples are of minimal complexity and fit each purpose well while remaining free of yet unintroduced material. The other two sections, theory and implementation, are interleaved to present the material in a constructive way. The introduction to lambda calculus marks the first deviation from a pragmatic study of Haskell, however, proofs are largely omitted leaving mostly definitions, relevant theorems, and explanations. This book served as my introduction to lambda calculus and I found it somewhere between impenetrable and relaxing, which is to say that it was very helpful despite requiring a second read. The chapter closes with a desugaring of Haskell into the simpler constructs of lambda calculus. Next the properties of applicative languages are studied and implemented (in Haskell) on a SECD machine. Then lazy evaluation is studied and techniques of implementation such as SECD, graph reduction, SKI-combinators, and the G-Machine are covered. Following this is an overview of program transformations and optimizations with a brief summary of ongoing work in the field. The three conceptual topics; language, theory, and implementation are covered uniformly so there is a decreasing completeness to the Haskell presentations as abstractions pile up e.g. there is no concrete implementation of lazy evaluation. Instead the operation of machines is described with graphics or combinators in the notation of lambda calculus. This book covers implementation adequate for an intermediate command of Haskell while serving as an excellent introduction to the theory behind functional programming.

Collected Fictions, by Jorge Luis Borges

Jorge Luis Borges has been called the greatest Spanish-language writer of our century. Now for the first time in English, all of Borges' dazzling fictions are gathered into a single volume, brilliantly translated by Andrew Hurley. From his 1935 debut with The Universal History of Iniquity, through his immensely influential collections Ficciones and The Aleph, these enigmatic, elaborate, imaginative inventions display Borges' talent for turning fiction on its head by playing with form and genre and toying with language. Together these incomparable works comprise the perfect one-volume compendium for all those who have long loved Borges, and a superb introduction to the master's work for those who have yet to discover this singular genius.

For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

Amazon.com Review
Although Jorge Luis Borges published his first book in 1923--doling out his own money for a limited edition of Fervor de Buenos Aires--he remained in Argentinian obscurity for almost three decades. In 1951, however, Ficciones appeared in French, followed soon after by an English translation. This collection, which included the cream of the author's short fictions, made it clear that Borges was a world-class (if highly unclassifiable) artist--a brilliant, lyrical miniaturist, who could pose the great questions of existence on the head of pin. And by 1961, when he shared the French Prix Formentor with Samuel Beckett, he seemed suddenly to tower over a half-dozen literary cultures, the very exemplar of modernism with a human face.

By the time of his death in 1986, Borges had been granted old master status by almost everybody (except, alas, the gentlemen of the Swedish Academy). Yet his work remained dispersed among a half-dozen different collections, some of them increasingly hard to find. Andrew Hurley has done readers a great service, then, by collecting all the stories in a single, meticulously translated volume. It's a pleasure to be reminded that Borges's style--poetic, dreamlike, and compounded of innumerable small surprises--was already in place by 1935, when he published A Universal History of Iniquity: "The earth we inhabit is an error, an incompetent parody. Mirrors and paternity are abominable because they multiply and affirm it." (Incidentally, the thrifty author later recycled the second of these aphorisms in his classic bit of bookish metaphysics, "Tlon, Uqbar, Orbis Teris.") The glories of his middle period, of course, have hardly aged a day. "The Garden of the Forking Paths" remains the best deconstruction of the detective story ever written, even in the post-Auster era, and "Pierre Menard, Author of the Quixote" puts the so-called death of the author in pointed, hilarious perspective.

But Hurley's omnibus also brings home exactly how consistent Borges remained in his concerns. As late as 1975, in "Avelino Arredondo," he was still asking (and occasionally even answering) the same riddles about time and its human repository, memory: "For the man in prison, or the blind man, time flows downstream as though down a slight decline. As he reached the midpoint of his reclusion, Arredondo more than once achieved that virtually timeless time. In the first patio there was a wellhead, and at the bottom, a cistern where a toad lived; it never occurred to Arredondo that it was the toad's time, bordering on eternity, that he sought." Throughout, Hurley's translation is crisp and assured (although this reader will always have a soft spot for "Funes, the Memorious" rather than "Funes, His Memory.") And thanks to his efforts, Borgesians will find no better--and no more pleasurable--rebuttal of the author's description of himself as "a shy sort of man who could not bring himself to write short stories." --James Marcus

From Publishers Weekly
Undeniably one of the most influential writers to emerge in this century from Latin America or anywhere else, Borges (1899-1986) is best known for his short stories, all of which appear here for the first time in one volume, translated and annotated by University of Puerto Rico professor Hurley. Many of the stories return to the same set of images and themes that mark Borges's best known work: the code of ethics embraced by gauchos, knifefighters and outlaws; labyrinths; confrontations with one's doppelganger; and discoveries of artifacts from other worlds (an encyclopedia of a mysterious region in Iraq; a strange disc that has only one side and that gives a king his power; a menacing book that infinitely multiplies its own pages; fragmentary manuscripts that narrate otherworldly accounts of lands of the immortals). Less familiar are episodes that narrate the violent, sordid careers of pirates and outlaws like Billy the Kid (particularly in the early collection A Universal History of Iniquity) or attempts to dramatize the consciousness of Shakespeare or Homer. Elusive, erudite, melancholic, Borges's fiction will intrigue the general reader as well as the scholar. This is the first in a series of three new translations (including the Collected Poems and Collected Nonfictions, all timed to coincide with the centennial of the author's birth), which will offer an alternative to the extensive but very controversial collaborations between Borges and Norman Thomas di Giovanni. First serial rights to the New Yorker, the New York Review of Books and Grand Street.

From Library Journal
Borges, one of the giants of 20th-century world literature and a pioneer of Spanish American letters, is the master of the short tale he called ficcion. Not quite short stories, Borgesian narrations are metaphysical speculation, the elaborate working out of a hypothetical premise or philosophical concept. Published partly in commemoration of the centennial of his birth, this collection marks the first time that all his narratives, stretching over 50 years, have been compiled in one volume in English. Except for Shakespeare's Memory, which appears here in translation for the first time, the other seven books have appeared separately. The Reign of Labyrinths (1964), the staple anthology for years, will now more than likely be usurped by this more modern translation, which has useful notes about Argentine history and culture. What a thrill to find old favorites?"The Circular Ruins," "Pierre Menard," "The Library of Babel"?updated and boxed with lesser-known gems. An exciting publication event and an indispensable acquisition for all libraries; collected poetry and nonfiction are slated to follow next year.?Lawrence Olszewski, OCLC Lib., Dublin, OH

I now describe my pet turtle as monstrous
By Jonathan Tu
I have always been hesitant to read fiction originally written in any language except English. I'm fickle enough as it is without needing another person's biases and tendencies interfering with my own... and so it was with great trepidation that I bought Hurley's collection.

The stories in summation: marvelous. Hurley's work? I'll never be able to read these Borges stories again without Hurley's translation heavily influencing, and that is an endorsement. I suspect that for most people their first experience of Borges will always be their most memorable, and their preferred. I don't think there are many "On first reading Chapman's Homer" instances: that initial shock of strange and monstrous (perhaps my favorite Borgesian adjective) is evident through any kind of translation so long as it is basically competent. Whatever arguments others may have with Hurley's, they can at least admit that his is that.

But I feel there's more: a playful lilt to the language, one that isn't overly scholarly or mechanical. Hurley's introduction briefly talks about the particular style Borges would become famous for: a laconic, matter-of-fact myth disguised as mere sentences, with the employment of words normally alien to each other. Hurley serves this style well, and his presentation of the most memorable lines of each story were the ones that stayed with me even after readings of several different versions. I'm not exaggerating when I say that I sat down with four different versions of "The Library of Babel" and compared them sentence by sentence. I was living in a bookstore at the time, stuck on an island in the middle of the Aegean and co-habitating with an Englishman who held Irby's version as the superior. I listened politely, and compared, and found that even after ouzo and attempts at persuasion it was my original experience that resonated. Reading Irby's left in me a strange longing for Hurley's words. I remember this line in particular:

"They were urged on by the delirium of trying to reach the books in the Crimson Hexagon: books whose format is smaller than usual, all-powerful, illustrated and magical." (Irby)

"They were spurred on by the holy zeal to reach - someday, through unrelenting effort - the books of the Crimson Hexagon - books smaller than natural books, books omnipotent, illustrated, and magical." (Hurley)

It was that "someday, through unrelenting effort" which stuck with me, and its absence in Irby doomed the entire enterprise. Is this a lack of Irby's, or my own bias towards the translation I first read? I'm not sure, but in almost every way I preferred Hurley.

There seems to be a distinct wave of anti-Hurley sentiment, and it's of the "I read a review that said it, but I'll assume that opinion as my own" variety. I eventually found that the Irby-devoted Englishman hadn't even bothered to read the Hurley version. Don't make his mistake of dismissal-by-proxy: try it for yourself.

A trove of mythological stories defying space and time.
By Dr. Kasumu O. Salawu
Some earlier reviewers complained about the quality of the translation of this collection of stories by Andrew Hurley, especially when compared to the collaboration between Jorge Luis Borges, (JLB, as he liked to sign), and Norman Thomas di Giovanni in preparing Labyrinths. (I suggest you read all reviews in the order they were written.) As one reasonably familiar with JLB's oeuvre, (a word JLB disliked), I state unequivocally that paying six dollars more for four times the number of stories in Labyrinths is a great bargain. Beyond nickels and dimes, it is precisely because the works of JLB were erstwhile translated into English in bits and pieces that his recognition as a gifted writer took so long in coming. (Jean-Pierre Berne's two-volume French translation, Oeuvres completes, is highly recommended.)
American-born writer, editor, translator and collaborator, di Giovanni, was JLB's personal assistant in Buenos Aires from 1968 to 1972. I shall now illustrate specifically how his style of translation differed from that of Hurley with the story "The Gospel According to Saint Mark." In characterizing the Gutre family when they first met Espinosa, di Giovanni wrote "They were barely articulate," (in English, that is), while Hurley scribed "They rarely spoke." While the former sentence explains why "the Gutres, who knew so much about things in the country, did not know how to explain them," (page 398 in this book), the latter indicated an aloofness if not suspicion of Espinosa from their first meeting which addresses the irony of the ending. In depicting their eagerness to have St. Mark read to them after dinner, Hurley wrote "In the following days, the Gutres would wolf down the spitted beef and canned sardines in order to arrive sooner at the Gospel" while di Giovanni essayed "The Gutres took to bolting their barbecued meat and their sardines so as not to delay the Gospel." Where di Giovanni deciphered JLB's allusions to Herbert Spencer, W. H. Hudson and Charles I, Hurley explicated the origin of Baltasar Espinosa, the whereabouts of Ramos Mejia and the theme of the novel, Don Segundo Sombra. Take your pick.
Finally, JLB habitually changed texts from edition to edition, especially in his poetry. It is then problematic to determine the faithfulness of the translations. Rest assured that, though rhyme and rhythm are compromised in any translation, in Hurley's rendering, the brilliance and magic of each story is preserved down to, say, the symbolism of the goldfinch at the conclusion of the illustrative yarn, "The Gospel According to Saint Mark."

Bad translation
By lux
The critical applause the marketing department of this book's publisher dreamed up is one recent example of how money corrupts art. Penguin, often a reliable imprint, needs to be told that THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR PUBLISHING INFERIOR MATERIAL. This was the first Borges I read, and I loved it, until I encountered alternative translations in an anthology called 'Borges: A Reader'. I noticed that the most elegant and intense translations were by someone called Norman Thomas di Giovanni. I asked a number of my Spanish-speaking friends to compare the stories to the originals, and they unanimously agreed that the di Giovannis were more accurate as well. Later I heard that di Giovanni published a number of Borges' works in several books that are now out of print. I wondered why a superior translation would be superseded by a new, clunky one, and why this new clunky one would be hailed as the "definitive English version". I found out that it's because di Giovanni made his translations in collaboration with Borges himself, that they spent years getting it right, and that Borges wept with joy over the translations which he deemed in some cases better than the original. So they agreed to split the profits 50/50, an unprecedented thing for translator to make that percentage. When Borges died his Estate decided they'd make more cash if they got a new translation... and they hold the copyrights. Thus the true definitive versions are condemned to dust.

The best that can be said about Hurley's translation is that they're "capable" (see Harold Bloom's obviously paid-for quote on the back); well, you'd have to REALLY screw up to make Borges not amazing. In other words, read whatever you can because Borges is the absolute greatest: the most intellectual fantacist, the most romantic scifi artist, the most classical modernist and modern classicist... and let's not forget the inventor of postmodernism.

I should say that after reading all of Hurley's Borges and most of di Giovanni's (as well as versions by various other people here and there) there's nothing really *wrong* with Hurley; often he succeeds in being more "cool" (in a curt, bad*ss kind of way) than di Giovanni, though at the cost of Borges' Victorian intellectual tone (present in all the writings, lectures, and interviews he did in English, as well as the Di Giovanni versions); and instead of re-translating into English from Spanish the bits here and there that Borges translated from English (most often and lengthily occurring in 'A Universal History of Infamy') Hurley just prints the text of the original verbatim, which breaks down some of Borges' carefully crafted illusions but offers much more insight. Also, he is on occasion a little more literal than the Di Giovanni/Borges translations, and therefore perhaps more 'authentic' in some sense... but is it possible to be more true to Borges than Borges was? Changes from the original stories in the Di Giovanni versions must be viewed as the author's revised intentions rather than as inaccurate translation, because of how closely Borges worked with him.

Bottom line: In a perfect world, both (and even more) versions would be readily available. But in the present circumstances, where due to greedy money battles we must have one and only one, and all others must be locked in the vault and kept from the eyes of the people forever, why would we want the results of some guy's day job instead of the one Borges himself worked on?

WHY WOULD THEY KEEP THAT FROM US?

Don't support this blacklisting; seek out the di Giovanni versions and demand Penguin stop publishing inferior material.

In a final note, I would recommend 'Borges: A Reader' edited by Emir Rodriguez Monegal and Alastair Reid over any other Borges book in print as both the best place to start and an essential volume. It contains poems, lectures and essays, movie reviews, satires, and of course a great many of the stories printed here, from a variety of translators (including a few Hurleys and a whole lot of Di Giovannis). There is material here you can't find anywhere else, and as two Spanish speakers and Borges experts you can trust them to pick "the best translations" as they say. It is out of print but not hard to come by. Explore!
