Very generic topical overview, no real analytical discussions

I bought this as a "required" text for a groundwater hydrogeology (contaminant transport) class. The class is highly dependent on partial differential equations, incomplete integrations, Bessel functions, leaky aquifer functions, etc. It's VERY numerical in nature and it involves a LOT of higher level calculus and differential equations. Tons of mathematical derivations of different formulas to describe contaminant activity in groundwater. And I haven't done any calculus in 13 years so my math skills are a little bit rusty.

It turns out that this book is only full of basic overviews of various topics related to groundwater contamination. It does cover a wide range of topics, from drawdown definitions to site remediation strategies. But it does not give ANY specific mathematical treatments for any of it. There are no equations. It does not define any algebraic variables. There are no mathematical examples to walk a student through the process of actually solving the problems that the book describes. So it is the exact opposite of what I was hoping for; all of the info in this book, I already know from other classes that I took last year, so now I sort of wish I hadn't wasted my money on it. As an OVERVIEW text, it is actually pretty good though. So if you are NEW to groundwater theory and you want a TOPICAL explanation of things, rather than a mathematical work-through, then this is a good choice. If you want a text to show you some equations to work through problems yourself... look elsewhere.

This is definitely a must have for those with a career in contaminant subsurface hydrology. Check out chapter 3 (transformation, retardation, attenuation of solutes), chapter 8 (groundwater and soil monitoring) and chapter 9 (site remediation). Easy to read - great reference material

About the Author
Brian H. Ross is a Professor of Psychology and of the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His research areas have included problem solving, complex learning, categorization, reasoning, memory, and mathematical modeling. He has been funded by the National Science Foundation, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, and the Institute of Education Sciences. Ross has been Editor-in-Chief of the journal Memory & Cognition, Chair of the Governing Board of the Psychonomic Society, and co-author of a textbook, Cognitive Psychology. He has held temporary leadership positions on the University of Illinois campus as Department Head of Psychology, Associate Dean of the Sciences, and Dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Ross has degrees from Brown University (B.S., Honors in Psychology), Rutgers University (M.S. in Mathematical Statistics), Yale University (M.S. in Psychology), and Stanford University (PhD.). Ross has been Editor of The Psychology of Learning and Motivation since 2000.

This is a departure from my usual thrillers, mysteries and young adult novels. Poetry isn't my thing and neither is meditation, I'm a talker! Yet, I found myself turning page after page, reading and re-reading each poem, looking forward to the next. Some dark...some whimsical, even. I could see myself revisiting these words and finding something new each time, learning more about the writer and maybe myself. Read it- it's a gift!

Poetry has never been my thing. This book has opened my eyes to the experience of poetry, the beauty and sensuality and mysticism of it. I have never read anything that has raised such intense feelings and thoughts in me. Discussing these poems with a friend has shown me how different our impressions of the work are and how it can lead people to completely different places. That is fascinating to me. I want to read anything this poet writes. I feel such gratitude for having this world opened to me in a way I could access and process.

Getting old

I have all copies in hardcovers and bought the last three through ebay. I took a beginning French class and am now attempting to read them with the help of google translate. Hoping that eventually the author will take pity on her fan readers and have the last three and last one in progress translated to English. Come on Madame Anne. I'm getting old waiting

We in the U.S.,have been waiting too long for the remaining Angelique books to come out.I would probably pay $300.00 for an English version.I'd buy this one,but I can't read French!(Good incentive though to learn).It's too bad really.Still hoping in Texas...Wise Sam

About the Author
Gertrud Aub-Buscher taught French at the University of the West Indies, and directed the language centre of the University of Hull. Now retired, she is continuing to do research on French-lexifer Creoles and French language policy in the West Indies. Beverley Ormerod Noakes is an associate professor of French at the University of Western Australia and a specialist in the teaching of Francophone literature. She is the author of An Introduction to the French Caribbean Novel and co-author of a book on women writers from Francophone Africa.
