Forever Amber, by Kathleen Winsor

Abandoned pregnant and penniless on the teeming streets of London, 16-year-old Amber St. Clare manages, by using her wits, beauty, and courage, to climb to the highest position a woman could achieve in Restoration England-that of favorite mistress of the Merry Monarch, Charles II. From whores and highwaymen to courtiers and noblemen, from events such as the Great Plague and the Fire of London to the intimate passions of ordinary-and extraordinary-men and women, Amber experiences it all. But throughout her trials and escapades, she remains, in her heart, true to the one man she really loves, the one man she can never have. Frequently compared to Gone with the Wind, Forever Amber is the other great historical romance, outselling every other American novel of the 1940s-despite being banned in Boston for its sheer sexiness. A book to read and reread, this edition brings back to print an unforgettable romance and a timeless masterpiece.

Read it the first time for curiosity; the second time for fun.
By Ga303
I was curious about the notoriously banned book from the '40s, so decided to see what all the hoopla was about. It's really a shame that "Forever Amber" has fallen off the radar, so to speak, in the ensuing decades, because I found it absolutely unputdownable.

I'm not a fan of the "bodice ripper" genre, nor do I think this necessarily fits into that genre, which I usually find to be pretty light on actual historical detail. The historical detail and context in "Forever Amber" is incredibly impressive, and Kathleen Winsor really does recreate this world and the vibrant, licentious pageant that was the reign of Charles II. The descriptions are luscious, and if you're a fan of costume details, this is the equivalent of word crack.

The character of Amber is unapologetically self-serving, tunnel-visioned and maybe not the brightest tool in the shed, but watching her preen and sleep her way through adventure after Restoration adventure is absolutely absorbing, whether you like her or not. We get the court of Charles II, the Plague, the Great Fire, the awakenings of the American Colonies ... everything that makes this era such a compelling and entertaining setting.

Like some other reviewers, I probably could have done without the interwoven chapters dealing with Lady Castlemaine, the king's brother and sister, or this or that scheming duke or nobleman -- I felt myself wanting to hurry through these just to get back to the Amber-centric chapters, which are fortunately the overwhelming majority of the book, and more chances to sit there thinking, "Oh, no, she DIDN'T!"

There's no graphic sex -- that could never have passed muster in the 1940s -- but much is implied. If you're put off by loose morals and loose sexual attitudes, this isn't the book for you. (And the court of Charles II probably isn't the place for you.)

It's too bad there's only been one film version -- and that the one film version was made in an era of cinema in which a huge majority of the events and context of the book had to be left out for the movie to even pass the censors, resulting in a very watered-down adaptation that might more appropriately have been billed as "based on characters created by Kathleen Winsor" as opposed to an actual film treatment of "Forever Amber." I would love to see it remade in today's day and age, without the censorship that kept the book from being faithfully filmed in the 1940s. It would make a glorious cable series.

All in all, I entirely enjoyed it, have read it more than once for pure entertainment's sake, and have recommended it to others.

Saga of a "Rags to Riches" Harlot During the Restoration Period
By Raccoon Feeder
This novel was a descriptive telling of an era of decadence which resulted from the strict past rule of Oliver Cromwell. The titled character Amber was used effectively as a tool to describe the ruling classes' extravagances and often times the horrors during the reign of Charles the II.
"Forever Amber" did not (for me) have the classical brilliance of "GWTW" nor the large cast of characters with in depth personalities. Amber was lacking in redeeming qualities to emotionally involve this reader in her various exploits. Having said that, however, this book should be judged on its own merits. The various story lines compelled me to join Amber on her many exciting journeys, too many to count, but here's a few: debtors' prison, the plague, the Great Fire of London, many unwanted pregnancies, mistress to the king and the never ending love interest On Her Part for Bruce.
The 900 plus page book did move very quickly as you are driven to read about her next adventure as it were. There are also the added bonuses of the various relationships between the royal members. Also, the political conniving of the Duke of Buckingham adds an extra flavor to the story. As many other reviewers have said, there is little or no sympathy for the title character. While it was interesting to read about all the affairs, decadence and lavishness of the rich, it did get overbearing at times.
For a novel of this length, it was an amazingly quick read compelling the reader to plough ahead. For this reader, there just wasn't enough payback after a 900 plus page read to have an unsatisfying ending ...SLIGHT SPOILER ...unless... the boat with her in it sunk! That being said, the book had very little parts that dragged. As you continue to tear through these pages it isn't long before the discovery sets in that the disposition of the main character will unfortunately ALWAYS REMAIN "FOREVER AMBER".

just like Scarlett in Gone with the Wind
By Vanessa Buckingham, author of Evansescere: Origins
I purchased this book a while back and when I finally read it I was upset with myself for not reading it sooner. Kathleen brings a world long since gone back to life if just for an instant. I pitied Amber from birth never knowing her past, yet to become a powerful woman in the king's court. Everything Amber did was not just out of ambition but for survival in a world where the life span was short and beyond our control. Amber was a different type of girl/woman for her time, she was ahead of her time, just like Scarlett in Gone with the Wind. Can we really blame them for wanting more out of life?

The Mallila/ qf Gyn('c%Ric SurRery is a comprehensive guide for opera tive decision-making and technique in female pelvic surgery. For a wide array of problems requiring surgical intervention, this volume examines the anatomy, preoperative evaluation, surgical strategy, details of tech nique, postoperative management, and anticipated results. The manage ment of operative complications and injuries to bowel, urinary system, and pelvic vessels is discussed. This volume is divided into three sections: ambulatory, vaginal, and abdominal surgery. The ambulatory section will be particularly useful to the family physician. The abdominal section explains complication man agement for the gynecologist whose surgical background may not include gastrointestinal or urinary tract surgery.. The section on ovarian surgery contains additional data for the general surgeon who may encounter unexpected ovarian lesions. Although the book should be most useful to gynecologic residents-in-training and practicing gynecologists, it will also be of use to general surgeons who perform gynecologic operations and to all physicians who perform ambulatory gynecologic procedures. The operative techniques depicted are currently used procedures based on the newer concepts of wound healing and suturing, utilizing mod ern surgical instrumentation. When several techniques are available, the author's personal preference is described. This book, which was produced by the project manager system, rep resents the efforts of 21 persons in three cities. Christine G. Williamson managed the project with drive, understanding, and skill. She was responsi ble also for coordinating information retrieval, organizing the chapters, and editing the text.

The Tales of Beedle the Bard, Standard Edition (Harry Potter), by J. K. Rowling

The Tales of Beedle the Bard, a Wizarding classic, first came to Muggle readers' attention in the book known as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Now, thanks to Hermione Granger's new translation from the ancient runes, we present this stunning edition with an introduction, notes, and illustrations by J. K. Rowling, and extensive commentary by Albus Dumbledore.

Never before have Muggles been privy to these richly imaginative tales: "The Wizard and the Hopping Pot," "The Fountain of Fair Fortune," "The Warlock’s Hairy Heart," "Babbitty Rabbitty and Her Cackling Stump," and of course "The Tale of the Three Brothers." But not only are they the equal of fairy tales we now know and love, reading them gives new insight into the world of Harry Potter.

This purchase also represents another very important form of giving: From every sale of this book, Scholastic will give its net proceeds to Lumos, an international children’s charity founded in 2005 by J. K. Rowling. Lumos is dedicated to ending the institutionalization of children, a harmful practice that affects the lives of up to eight million disadvantaged children around the world who live in institutions and orphanages, many placed there as a result of poverty, disability, disease, discrimination and conflict; very few are orphans. Lumos works to reunite children with their families, promote family-based care alternatives, and help authorities to reform their systems and close down institutions and orphanages. www.wearelumos.org

Amazon.com Review
The Tales of Beedle the Bard, Collector's Edition
Offered Exclusively by Amazon (Available in Limited Quantities)

In December 2007, J.K. Rowling unveiled The Tales of Beedle the Bard, a very special book of five fairy tales illustrated by the bard herself, embellished with silver ornaments and mounted moonstones. Amazon was fortunate to come into possession of one of the original copies, and it was our privilege to share images and reviews of this incredible artifact. Now J.K. Rowling is giving millions of Harry Potter fans worldwide cause for celebration with a new edition of The Tales of Beedle the Bard (available December 4, 2008) and Amazon is thrilled to exclusively offer a luxuriously packaged Collector's Edition designed to evoke the spirit of the handcrafted original.

Tucked in its own case disguised as a wizarding textbook found in the Hogwarts library, the Collector's Edition includes an exclusive reproduction of J.K. Rowling's handwritten introduction, as well as 10 additional illustrations not found in the Standard Edition or the original. Opening the case reveals a velvet bag embroidered with J.K. Rowling’s signature, in which sits the piece de resistance: your very own copy of The Tales of Beedle the Bard, complete with metal skull, corners, and clasp; replica gemstones; and emerald ribbon. As a special gift for fans, the Collector's edition also includes a set of 10 ready-for-framing prints of J.K. Rowling's illustrations, enclosed in a velvet-lined pocket in the lid of the outer case.

Offering the trademark wit and imagination familiar to Rowling's legions of readers--as well as Aesop's wisdom and the occasional darkness of the Brothers Grimm--each of these five tales reveals a lesson befitting children and parents alike: the strength gained with a trusted friendship, the redemptive power of love, and the true magic that exists in the hearts of all of us. Rowling's new introduction also comments on the personal lessons she has taken from the Tales, noting that the characters in Beedle's collection "take their fates into their own hands, rather than taking a prolonged nap or waiting for someone to return a lost shoe," and "that magic causes as much trouble as it cures."

But the true jewel of this new edition is the enlightening and comprehensive commentary (including extensive footnotes!) by Professor Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore, who brings his unique wizard's-eye perspective to the collection. Discovered "among the many papers which Dumbledore left in his will to the Hogwarts Archives," the venerable wizard's ruminations on the Tales allow today's readers to place them in the context of 16th century Muggle society, even allowing that "Beedle was somewhat out of step with his times in preaching a message of brotherly love for Muggles" during the era of witch hunts that would eventually drive the wizarding community into self-imposed exile. In fact, versions of the same stories told in wizarding households would shock many for their uncharitable treatment of their Muggle characters.

Professor Dumbledore also includes fascinating historical backstory, including tidbits such as the history and pursuit of magic wands, a brief comment on the Dark Arts and its practitioners, and the struggles with censorship that eventually led "a certain Beatrix Bloxam" to cleanse the Tales of "much of the darker themes that she found distasteful," forever altering the meaning of the stories for their Muggle audience. Dumbledore also allows us a glimpse of his personal relationship to the Tales, remarking that it was through "Babbity Rabbity and Her Cackling Stump" that "many of us [wizards] first discovered that magic could not bring back the dead."

Both a wise and delightful addition to the Harry Potter canon, this new translation of The Tales of Beedle the Bard is all that fans could hope for and more--and an essential volume for the libraries of Muggles, wizards, and witches, both young and old.

The Children's Voice Campaign
The Tales of Beedle the Bard is published by The Children’s High Level Group (CHLG), registered charity number 1112575, a charity co-founded in 2005 by J.K. Rowling and Emma Nicholson MEP to make life better for vulnerable children.

All net proceeds from the sale will be donated to The Children's Voice campaign.

The Children's Voice campaign is run by CHLG. It campaigns for child rights across Europe, particularly in Eastern Europe where over a million children and teenagers are growing up in institutions, often in unacceptable conditions. In most cases they are without adequate human or emotional contact and stimulation, while many only just survive without life's basics such as adequate shelter and food.

CHLG's Children's Voice campaign helps around a quarter of a million children each year through education activities; outreach work in institutions; and a dedicated telephone and email help line.

Also Available: the Standard Edition

Amazon Reviews the Original Handcrafted Edition of The Tales of Beedle the Bard
The following is Amazon's original December 2007 review. Please note that the review and images below pertain to the handmade book purchased at auction:

There is no easy way to define the experience of seeing, holding, or reading J.K. Rowling's The Tales of Beedle the Bard, so let's just start with one word: "Whoa." The very fact of its existence (an artifact pulled straight out of a novel) is magical, not to mention the facts that only seven copies exist in all the world and each of the never-before-told tales is handwritten and illustrated by J.K. Rowling herself (and it's quite clear from the first few pages that she has some skill as an artist). Rowling's handwriting is like the familiar scrawl of a favorite aunt--it's not hard to read, but it does require attention--allowing you to take it slow and savor the mystery of each next word.

So how do you review one of the most remarkable tomes you've ever had the pleasure of opening? You just turn each page and allow yourself to be swept away by each story. You soak up the simple tales that read like Aesop's fables and echo the themes of the series; you follow every dip and curve of Rowling's handwriting and revel in every detail that makes the book unique--a slight darkening of a letter here, a place where the writing nearly runs off the page there. You take all that and you try and bring it to life, knowing that you will never be able to do it justice. With that, let's dig in and begin at the beginning, shall we? --Daphne Durham

Why We Love Harry: Our Favorite Moments from the Series
There are plenty of reasons to love Rowling's wildly popular series--no doubt you have several dozen of your own. Our list features favorite moments, characters, and artifacts from the first five books. Keep in mind that this list is by no means exhaustive (what we love about Harry could fill ten books!) and does not include any of the spectacular revelatory moments that would spoil the books for those (few) who have not read them. Enjoy.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
* Harry's first trip to the zoo with the Dursleys, when a boa constrictor winks at him.
* When the Dursleys' house is suddenly besieged by letters for Harry from Hogwarts. Readers learn how much the Dursleys have been keeping from Harry. Rowling does a wonderful job in displaying the lengths to which Uncle Vernon will go to deny that magic exists.
* Harry's first visit to Diagon Alley with Hagrid. Full of curiosities and rich with magic and marvel, Harry's first trip includes a trip to Gringotts and Ollivanders, where Harry gets his wand (holly and phoenix feather) and discovers yet another connection to He-Who-Must-No-Be-Named. This moment is the reader's first full introduction to Rowling's world of witchcraft and wizards.
* Harry's experience with the Sorting Hat.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
* The de-gnoming of the Weasleys' garden. Harry discovers that even wizards have chores--gnomes must be grabbed (ignoring angry protests "Gerroff me! Gerroff me!"), swung about (to make them too dizzy to come back), and tossed out of the garden--this delightful scene highlights Rowling's clever and witty genius.
* Harry's first experience with a Howler, sent to Ron by his mother.
* The Dueling Club battle between Harry and Malfoy. Gilderoy Lockhart starts the Dueling Club to help students practice spells on each other, but he is not prepared for the intensity of the animosity between Harry and Draco. Since they are still young, their minibattle is innocent enough, including tickling and dancing charms.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
* Ron's attempt to use a telephone to call Harry at the Dursleys'.
* Harry's first encounter with a Dementor on the train (and just about any other encounter with Dementors). Harry's brush with the Dementors is terrifying and prepares Potter fans for a darker, scarier book.
* Harry, Ron, and Hermione's behavior in Professor Trelawney's Divination class. Some of the best moments in Rowling's books occur when she reminds us that the wizards-in-training at Hogwarts are, after all, just children. Clearly, even at a school of witchcraft and wizardry, classes can be boring and seem pointless to children.
* The Boggart lesson in Professor Lupin's classroom.
* Harry, Ron, and Hermione's knock-down confrontation with Snape.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
* Hermione's disgust at the reception for the veela (Bulgarian National Team Mascots) at the Quidditch World Cup. Rowling's fourth book addresses issues about growing up--the dynamic between the boys and girls at Hogwarts starts to change. Nowhere is this more plain than the hilarious scene in which magical cheerleaders nearly convince Harry and Ron to jump from the stands to impress them.
* Viktor Krum's crush on Hermione--and Ron's objection to it.
* Malfoy's "Potter Stinks" badge.
* Hermione's creation of S.P.E.W., the intolerant bigotry of the Death Eaters, and the danger of the Triwizard Tournament. Add in the changing dynamics between girls and boys at Hogwarts, and suddenly Rowling's fourth book has a weight and seriousness not as present in early books in the series. Candy and tickle spells are left behind as the students tackle darker, more serious issues and take on larger responsibilities, including the knowledge of illegal curses.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

* Harry's outburst to his friends at No. 12 Grimmauld Place. A combination of frustration over being kept in the dark and fear that he will be expelled fuels much of Harry's anger, and it all comes out at once, directly aimed at Ron and Hermione. Rowling perfectly portrays Harry's frustration at being too old to shirk responsibility, but too young to be accepted as part of the fight that he knows is coming.
* Harry's detention with Professor Umbridge. Rowling shows her darker side, leading readers to believe that Hogwarts is no longer a safe haven for young wizards. Dolores represents a bureaucratic tyrant capable of real evil, and Harry is forced to endure their private battle of wills alone.
* Harry and Cho's painfully awkward interactions. Rowling clearly remembers what it was like to be a teenager.
* Harry's Occlumency lessons with Snape.
* Dumbledore's confession to Harry.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

* The introduction of the Horcrux.
* Molly Weasley asking Arthur Weasley about his "dearest ambition. "Rowling has always been great at revealing little intriguing bits about her characters at a time, and Arthur’s answer "to find out how airplanes stay up" reminds us about his obsession with Muggles.
* Harry's private lessons with Dumbledore, and more time spent with the fascinating and dangerous pensieve, arguably one of Rowling’s most ingenious inventions.
* Fred and George Weasley’s Joke Shop, and the slogan: "Why Are You Worrying About You-Know-Who? You Should Be Worrying About U-NO-POO--the Constipation Sensation That's Gripping the Nation!"
* Luna's Quidditch commentary. Rowling created scores of Luna Lovegood fans with hilarious and bizarre commentary from the most unlikely Quidditch commentator.
* The effects of Felix Felicis.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

* The revelation of Snape's nature (especially Snape’s Patronus and the emotion behind it). It serves as a reminder that it is love (requited or not) in all its forms that drives many of our actions.
* Harry asking if the conversation with Dumbledore was real or happening in his head, and Dumbledore responding "Of course it is happening inside your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real?"
* Ron gifting Harry a book on dating witches, a subtle reminder that they are still teens, after all.

From School Library Journal
Grade 4 Up—Muggles grow up with Grimm's fairy tales; wizarding children grow up with Tales of Beedle the Bard. The Bard's book is a collection of five tales, bequeathed to Hermione Granger by Professor Dumbledore. The passing of the book into her hands was intended to be both "entertaining and instructive." As in all good mysteries, information contained within its pages provided Hermione with clues essential to helping Harry in the series' last installment. In particular, "The Tale of Three Brothers" describes how three magical items appeared after siblings cleverly cheat death. It is these items that play a pivotal role in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Scholastic, 2007). Those hoping to re-create the hours of pleasure spent curled up with a J.K. Rowling book may be disappointed at the brevity of this title, but they will undoubtedly enjoy the tales and Dumbledore's often lengthy, cynical-but-wise commentary on each one.—Robyn Gioia, Bolles School, Ponte Vedra, FL

From Bookmarks Magazine
It is easy to be cynical about The Tales of Beedle the Bard. Harry Potter fans may see it as a inadequate substitute for the delayed release of the film version of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and Muggles—you ordinary, nonmagical humans—may wonder why another Hogwarts book is necessary, even if one of the stories in this collection, "The Tale of the Three Brothers," plays an important role in the final battle between Harry and Voldemort (in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows). But critics found much in this book for even nonfans to admire—from the subtle moral messages of the tales to the voice which Rowling allows to emerge in the tongue-in-cheek commentaries. A few critics commented that the collection lacks Rowling's usual charm and originality, but most fans will be happy to have a few more moments with Dumbledore.

My only complaint: I wanted more
By A. Writer O. Sorts
If you love the Harry Potter series, then this is a must-have. It arrived in the mail yesterday, and I devoured it right away. And that's my only complaint: it's brevity. It's a short, quick read. But a fun one.
And it's not simply a handful of fairy tales from the wizarding world. The commentary by Albus Dumbledore on each story was a really nice touch, in some cases even more entertaining to me than the stories themselves.
If you were expecting a thick book that would absorb you for hours as the Harry Potter series did, I hope you're not disappointed in this book's brevity. It's still worth the price if you enjoy the series, and it supports a charitable cause.
If you've never read the Harry Potter books (or seen the movies, I suppose) then do NOT consider this a sample of the series. You will not glean any sense of the depth, quality and, as everyone else calls it, the magic of the Harry Potter world. This book is a tasty dessert to those who've feasted on the seven-course series.

Pretty Good
By Brett Daniels
The book was decent, in a cutesy kind of way. It is a very quick read -- somewhere around 100 pages. Being in my twenties, I think I was probably a little older than the intended audience. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed the Harry Potter series, but with one caveat: Don't get your hopes up too high. It's good and provides some insight into "The Deathly Hallows," but it's no Harry Potter.

The Collectors Edition is a Must Have
By Laura
A short while ago I opened my door to find a large package from Amazon: I could not believe it was actually my copy of The Collectors Edition of the Tales of Beedle the Bard! While I first ordered this a while ago, there was a problem with my credit card and I had to reorder, so I did not think I would get this book at all, much less on the relealse date! Thank you Amazon, I don't know how you do it!

The book is an absolutely must have for every Harry Potter fan. I had already read the tales themselves when I opened this volume, and they are truly delightful and full of wonderful messages for our children (and for all the magic lovers among us). The stories aside, this edition is truly beautiful and a pleasure to hold in one's hand. There are some wonderful and unique features to it -- the set of reprints is just beautiful; the small book inside the velvet bag inside the larger volume makes you feel like you are opening a treasure and indeed you are!

I bought this volume for my son for a Christmas present, but now I'm thinking, maybe I will need another one! It is well worth the money to own such a special item, and it makes it that much greater that a portion of the proceeds goes to Ms. Rowling's incredible charity. I know the holidays are going to be very special in my house. Thank you Ms. Rowling, for yet another gift to your legions of fans.

fantastic learning experience
By missinglinkwray
Of all the guitar tab books, why study Steve Cropper?

Because he always cuts through the mix, with few overdubs or effects. Steve's chunky, middle-of-the-neck Tele sound is always present, allowing you to hear nuances in his playing, even on studio versions of songs.

Because his playing is always tasteful- he weaves in and out of the lead singer's phrases, leaving plenty of space in the space on the arrangement, building anticipation. It's very subtle, and therefore helpful to have exact sheet music. He will show you when NOT to play!

Because he played on incredible, all-time-classic recordings that are tons of fun to play along with.

I subtracted one star because there are a few duds among the songs: In the Midnight Hour, Dreams to Remember, Lover's Prayer, and Mr. Pitiful are all fantastic songs to listen to, but the guitar parts are not interesting or complicated enough to merit sheet music. R&B guitar is all about the fills and the syncopated rhythms, and those songs are played straight. Compare them to Direct Me, Knock on Wood, or Ole Man Trouble, which are dig in, play a million times, live-in-the-backbeat kind of songs.

soul, nothing but soul
By roy aiken
Whiteman with soul. Book should have had a cd tutorial with it because some of Steve Cropper's fills for novice guitar players are difficult w/o being able to hear them first hand. Otherwise, the book was tops.

Holt McDougal Library: What They Fought For 1861-1865 Grades 9-12 (Walter Lynwood Fleming Lectures in Southern History, Louisia), by HOLT

In Battle Cry Of Freedom,  James M. McPherson presented a fascinating, concise  general history of the defining American conflict.  With What They Fought For, he  focuses his considerable talents on what motivated  the individual soldier to fight. In an exceptional  and highly original Civil War analysis, McPherson  draws on the letters and diaries of nearly one  thousand Union and Confederate soldiers, giving voice  to the very men who risked their lives in the  conflict. His conclusion that most of them felt a keen  sense of patriotic and ideological commitment  counters the prevailing belief that Civil War soldiers  had little or no idea of what they were lighting  for. In their letters home and their diaries --  neither of which were subject to censorship -- these  men were able to comment, in writing, on a wide  variety of issues connected with their war  experience. Their insights show how deeply felt and  strongly held their convictions were and reveal far more  careful thought on the ideological issues of the  war than has previously been thought to be true.  Living only eighty years after the signing of the  Declaration of Independence, Civil War soldiers felt  the legacy and responsibility entrusted to them by  the Founding Fathers to to preserve fragile  democracy -- be it through secession or union -- as  something worth dying for. In What They  Fought For, McPherson takes individual voices  and places them in the great and terrible choir of  a country divided against itself. The result is  both an impressive scholarly tour de force and a  lively, highly accessible account of the sentiments  of both Northern and Southern soldiers during the  national trauma of the Civil War.

What made a Civil War soldier fight?
By bixodoido
This is a different kind of book about the Civil War. Instead of discussing all the "official" reasons for the war--in other words, instead of examining why Lincoln and Davis said the war was being fought--and instead of looking at the causes of the war from a philosopher's or idealist's point of view, James McPherson examines what really made men fight. After reading thousands of letters and scores of diaries of simple soldiers, McPherson attempts to explain why the men who participated in the actual combat of the war were there.

His process is simple. He looks at a group of Confederate soldiers (just under 400) and another of Union soldiers (a little over 500) and tries to discover what made them tick. In the book (which was originally a series of lectures), he quotes from many of them, and cites such causes as preservation of the Union, abolition of slavery, and individual liberty as reasons for fighting. Certain classes of soldiers are either over or underrepresented by his study, but McPherson makes allowances for these, and attempts to hypothesize what his data mean on a larger scale.

The Result? Basically, McPherson's study is a refutation of the recent scholarly belief that the common man fights in war more in a spirit of comradery than for any other ideal. In other words, men become dependent on each other, and fight to save their own skin and that of their buddies. While this may have been true for the world wars and other conflicts, McPherson alleges it was not the case for the Civil War. And he makes his case pretty well. From his sample, it appears that a great deal of Civil War combatants were actually fighting for something, and believed in the cause for which they struggled. For this reason, this book is essential to any study of the war. McPherson has broken new ground with this study and helped us to better understand the human side of the Civil War.

A Must Read Introduction to Soldiers' Motivations
By 8th Conn Vol
Dr. McPherson's book, "What They Fought For, 1861-1865," explores the ideology of the Civil War soldier. His theme is that, in fact, Civil War soldiers knew why they fought and he rejects those historians' views who assert that Civil War soldiers had no idea for what they fought or that they just fought for their comrades. He maintains that: "a large number of those men in blue and gray were intensely aware of the issues at stake and passionately concerned about them" (4). The volunteer armies, the most literate to that time, were men who were concerned and knowledgeable about politics were fighting for, at the core, "liberty and republicanism." He supplies fewer quotations and more analyses than Bell Wiley and gives the demographics of his sources allowing one to better judge the veracity of his conclusions. His sources, uncensored letters and diaries, admittedly not statistically representative, are the best he could find to flesh out his thesis. His Confederate sources were biased because they were those who enlisted early in the war, were slaveholders, and were those who were in actual combat. The representative differences between the Union and Confederate samples were also stated: there were fewer class differences in the Union sample, and, the Union soldiers were more literate, better educated, and more politically aware. Union soldiers were similar to Confederates in that early enlistees were more patriotic than those who were drafted or enlisted after the first two years of the war and those who were in actual combat tended to express beliefs in "duty, honor and country" more than those in non combat assignments. That Union sentiment remained strong even through difficult times in 1863 and 1864, is demonstrated in Union reenlistments when initial terms of service expired and by the almost 80% soldier vote for Lincoln in the 1864 election.

While both sides said they fought to preserve the legacy of 1776, he found that "Confederates fought for independence, for their property and way of life, for their survival as a nation" (27) while the Yankees fought early in the war to preserve the Union "against the threat of `dissolution, anarchy, and ruin'" (32). Certainly feelings of revenge and hatred were present on both sides but since the South bore the brunt of the conflict, these feelings were stronger there due to the extensive physical devastation. The North had more thoughts of punishments the South should undergo since its secession was the cause of the war.

In his final chapter, McPherson discusses what the soldiers thought about slavery. He finds that Southerners fought for their freedom to own slaves as property and for white supremacy. Without slavery, the South could not exist as it had--its economy and therefore its culture depended on slavery. Northern soldiers were almost as racist as Southern soldiers but as the war progressed, many finally realized that the war would end much faster if it also became a war to free the slaves. Slavery caused the war so to finally end the rebellion, slavery must end. Freed slaves employed as soldiers and laborers could end the war faster not only by fighting the Confederates, but also by freeing Union soldiers for frontline duties. In addition, depriving the South of labor would help deplete its production of food and trade goods. As Lincoln said, preservation of the Union was paramount so if freeing the slaves did that, then it must happen. Thus freeing the slaves became both a means and a goal of Union victory. Ironically, the emancipation issue faded for both Union and Confederate veterans after the war as the "Lost Cause" myth took hold.

McPherson's clearly written book was, for me, compelling, because he carefully discusses his sources and how he interprets them. I did come away believing his thesis that most Civil War soldiers knew about the issues for which they fought, but it is a slightly qualified belief--I would like to see him find and analyze more from the cohorts with less documentation. It may be, however, groups such as black soldiers, non-native soldiers, etc., simply do not have sufficient extant documents to give a more statistically valid sample, so a "quasi-representative sample" is the best one can construct. His later book, "For Cause and Comrades," an expansion of this one, used larger sample sizes (Union 647 versus 562, Confederate 429 versus 374), and he was able to find a few more sources for African American Union soldiers (1% versus .36%) and foreign-born Union soldiers (9% versus 8%), but not surprisingly, came to the same conclusion as his earlier book: "many Civil War soldiers felt a profound and passionate commitment to the ideological purposes for which they fought" (68-69). His later book discusses in more depth his earlier themes especially in making more contemporary comparisons and was somewhat better able to approximate statistically the composition of the Union and Confederate armies, but he still admits that it is still only a close approximation. This book gives modern analyses of what combat soldiers in more recent wars underwent which helps to understand what Civil War soldiers endured, however, as McPherson points out, the Victorian Age had a different zeitgeist, allowing some to argue that the heartfelt patriotism felt by most Civil War combatants was unique, and would not lend itself to modern analyses. I believe with McPherson that combat is combat and that the comparable stresses a man undergoes in modern intense combat are similar to Civil War combat and therefore new analytical techniques such as studying combat fatigue or post traumatic stress disorder could be used in trenchantly dissecting Civil War combat reactions. Also, some may argue that because he started his research with a conclusion already in mind, i.e., there are identifiable reasons why soldiers fought, he found evidence to support that and disregarded or downplayed that which did not. Realistically, I believe that most writers and scholars start out writing a book or monograph with a thesis or idea in mind although they may modify or even discard it as their research progresses. From the books and articles I have read authored by McPherson, I conclude that he would have been willing to revisit his beginning thesis should his research have required it.

A skinny book with a provocative thesis
By Steven Peterson
James McPherson is an eminent historian, who has written some classics, such as "Battle Cry of Freedom." This is a slender volume (part of a larger research project and the basis for a lecture) that is based on an interesting thesis: that soldiers, both north and south, fought to a considerable extent for ideology, and not solely as brothers in arms with other troops, for ideals of manhood, for the notions of honor and duty, and so on..

He used as his "data base" hundreds of letters and diaries written by soldiers, from both the Union and Confederate ranks.

In his Introduction, he observes that there were a range of motivations among soldiers, but that one emerged that surprised him--(pages 1-2) "This theme [the role of ideology] has emerged to greater importance r=than I expected when I began the project." He notes this thesis in juxtaposition to one common perspective, namely, that many soldiers had little or no idea what they were fighting for.

Among the "causes" that soldiers said they were fighting for in their writings: liberty and independence (both Yankees and Rebs), to preserve what the Founding Fathers stated in 1776 (the Declaration of Independence) and what they fought for in the Revolution, and slavery (many Confederate troops in favor of the peculiar institution and many Union troops opposed to it--far more, apparently, than one might have guessed).

All in all, given its brevity, a good little book. Those who attended this lecture series surely got their monies' worth! For an interesting effort to understand what the soliders, blue and gray fought for, this is a nice volume.
