About the Author
HARRY BLAMIRES is an Anglican theologian, literary critic, and novelist. Now retired, he served as head of the English department at King Alfred's College in Winchester, England. Blamires started writing at the encouragement of C. S. Lewis, his friend and tutor. The Christian Mind, his best-known work, has been used as a textbook at hundreds of bible colleges and seminaries around the world. He is also the author of The Bloomsday Book: A Guide through Ulysses and A Short History of English Literature, among many other works.

The Christian Mind

My uncle Dwight gave me this book almost twenty years ago. I'll never forget what he said when he handed it to me: "Only real men can read this book." Whether it was meant to motivate or amuse, I read it with a vengeance. This is my third time through.

Blamires thesis is clear throughout the book: "There is no longer a Christian mind." An interesting proposal, given the original publishing date of 1963. But the facts outweigh any contrary argument. The author notes, "And we have emptied our brains of Christian vocabulary, Christian concepts, in advance, just to make sure that we should get fully into touch. Thus we have stepped mentally into secularism." We live in a post-Christian era. This much is certain. The frightening reality is that some Christians understood this in the 1960's. Many Christians today simply have no comprehension of the Christian mind.

In part two, the author suggests what the Christian mind should look like. He delineates six marks of the Christian mind which include:

1. A supernatural orientation.

2. An awareness of evil.

3. A conception of truth

4. Accepts the notion of authority

5. Has a concern for the person

6. Has a passion to live life to the glory of God.

The Christian Mind should be celebrated for its analysis of culture and its allegiance to the Word of God. Like Francis Schaeffer, Blamires is in touch with the barriers to Christian thinking. While his concerns originated in 1963, they continue to reverberate almost fifty years later.

Still relevant

This book has one central argument and that argument is hammered home in expert fashion in every chapter. The author claims that there is no longer a truly Christian way of thinking about life and culture and politics and every sphere of our existence. The Christian mind has been replaced with the secular both in the Church and in the world. His viewpoint is difficult to argue with because his explanations and observations are spot on. The book was written in the early 60's but it not only predicts our current cultural state, its answers are still relevant.

The Christian Mind: A World-View Question: Do we think Christianly or Secularly?

The book is marvelous. One can debate his thinking, but that's what he invites the reader to do. Although the book was written in the 1960s, it's relevant today. What's our world-view regarding matters outside of morality and church? One will be surprised to find that perhaps they're as secular in their thinking as their neighbors. How do we think about things of culture and politics? It's well worth the read.

Isaac Asivov is incredible!

Actually, I have not read this book yet but have read 4 previous volumes on his work on the Middle Ages. I will soon tackle his last 4 in this series on the US (which includes this one). Asimov definitely was a genius and writes in a way that makes it easy to understand. I just wish he was around to write more. He is well know for sci-fi, but I love his non-fiction. He's the best!!!

Dr, Asimov's histories tell the stories of previous eras so that even I can understand. His versions are much more clear but complete than traditional school-taught versions. He ties everything together.

a really great summary of the events that created the colonies and states and their peculiarities that still exist today. And history of names of places is very interesting. I read this after finding and reading and loving the second volume in an English book store years ago. This one is a keeper too!

About the Author

UMRAN S. INAN is Professor of Electrical Engineering at Stanford University, where he serves as Director of the Space, Telecommunications, and Radioscience (STAR) Laboratory. He has received the 1998 Stanford University Tau Beta Pi Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, and actively conducts research in electromagnetic waves in plasmas, lightning discharges, ionospheric physics, and very low frequency remote sensing. Dr. Inan has served as the Ph.D. thesis advisor for 13 students and is a senior member of IEEE, a member of Tau Beta Pi, Sigma Xi, the American Geophysical Union, the Electromagnetics Academy, and serves as Secretary of U.S. National Committee of the International Union of Radio Science (URSI).

AZIZ S. INAN is Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Portland, where he has also served as Department Chairman. A winner of the University's faculty teaching award, he conducts research in electromagnetic wave propagation in conducting and inhomogeneous media. He is a member of Tau Beta Pi and IEEE.

Successful integration of earlier two books...

Integration of authors earlier two books on Engineering Electromagnetics (which did not do transmission and reflections vs arbitrary incident angle) and Electromagnetic Waves (which had general transmission and reflection case, but not electro and magneto statics). If you have the earlier two books, you have just about everything and more that is included in this single volume with the exception of some newer examples. Very nice descriptions of distributed vs lumped components and time delay. Nice examples abound, for example, dielectric waveguides using InGaAs and InP semiconductors and use of forces on capacitor in MEMs, and an introduction to metamaterials. A bit wordy, but generally interesting reading. Gives nice phase plots in addition to magnitude when talking about reflection and transmission, which seems a rarity in most books. Antenna theory not covered at all, which is a bit of a disappointment if one is looking for a complete volume for the undergraduate EE. No numerical or variational methods and nothing on coplanar or microstrip lines. Wish some author somewhere would explain how size of hole in Faraday cage affects shielding effectiveness and include enough of a discussion of variational methods so undergrads would realize that the capacitance of a pair of conductors of an odd shape is always smaller than the capacitance of some known configuration that would enclose them, such as parallel wires enclosing rectangular wires (i.e. how to set useful upper and lower bounds for capacitance, resistance, inductance without detailed calculation) but you still need to find such usefuls facts in Jackson or Collin end of chapter problems.

Great drumset book for young drummers!

My wife teaches drumset to all ages and loves this book for young students. It has cool pictures that students like and touches the basics of rock, jazz, and blues. It also has sample drum fills the students can play. A CD is also included. Her only complaint is that it might move a little too fast for very young students due to the fact that it only spends one lesson on quarter note beats and then jumps into eighth notes. Highly recommended.
