Ruskin has great insights into medieval architecture especially in Italy but he is bigoted against the Renaissance so beware of that. Henry James took him to task for that and James was right. Great cheap version of the Borgia Codex

Be warned that you must compare the images from this reproduction to the original, for three reasons: 1) sometimes the authors of this reproduction use colors that do not match the original codex, 2) sometimes the authors of this reproduction place the wrong imagery in the reproduction, for example a monkey's head instead of a humans head, and 3)Sometimes the authors speculate as to what might have been on a page and they use their own judgment, which might be wrong.

Other than that, this is a great reproduction of the Borgia codex. It is cheap, it is light and it is well made. Another thing to keep in mind, the codex borgia is read left to right, this reproduction was printed right to left, so it forces you to read the codex in the wrong direction.

Look at the "plate number" and the page number in the book, they do not match. Also notice that the plate number is in descending order.

A "MUST READ"

Although I (seriously) have more than a thousand books in my non-fiction library, I rarely write reviews. I'm not sure why - I am an English teacher living on a 40 acre farm and I have actually READ all of the books I have from cover to cover (really). However, I am making an exception for this book - I couldn't put it down. It was fantastic reading from beginning to end. Now, part of the reason I might have liked it so much (disclaimer) is because, like the author, I am also middle-aged... but I truly think the reason it resonated with me was because it is an honest telling of both the good and the frustrating times the author had trying to carve out their farmstead. If you are looking for a step by step "How To" book, this isn't the one for you (although you should still buy it and read it, because it WILL help you). If you are looking for an honest look at the types of experiences one might have while trying to establish a homestead, and how one couple went about dealing with everything, this is IT!!!! I have loaned out my copy to several neighbors already, and they loved it too. We are all hoping there is more to come from this author.

5 Acres and a Dream: From Fantastic Blog to Fantastic Book

5 Acres and a Dream is a fantastic blog, one I've been reading for a couple of years now. I've always been impressed with homesteader Leigh's (and husband Dan's) measured, logical approach. When a problem presents itself, they research and come up with the best solution for them.

When I first got a hint that maybe a book was in the works I was excited and also a bit curious. Would it just be another book about how to homestead? How much of Leigh and Dan would be in the book? Would it simply be a collection of posts from the blog?

Alas, I had nothing to worry about. The book is outstanding!

Sure, the book talks a lot about homesteading, and there are even some recipes included. The footnotes and reference section provide a wealth of further reading and information.

But where the book shines best is where the author talks about their mindset and relates their thought process -- what brought them to each decision they made.

I did not buy this book strictly as a "how to" manual for homesteading. Rather, I wanted to know more about Leigh and Dan's experience, more about the road that brought them here. But don't get me wrong, you could certainly do worse for homesteading information -- the book is stuffed full of hints, tips, and handy references for everything from cheesemaking to forestry. Often, Leigh includes alternatives or options for other ways to produce, grow, fix, or care for various components of the homestead.

And where other books can come across as preachy or condescending, 5 Acres and a Dream: the Book has a friendly, helpful tone. The author talks about why they made the decisions they made, but does not chastise those that haven't made the same choices.

She talks about what worked and what did not. She mentions their failures, rather than painting the whole experience in the rosy "DIY" light that we get on television and most other books on the subject.

I loved this book! And it's a beauty, certainly worthy of your bookshelf. Leigh packed the book with dozens and dozens of photos, really bringing their homestead to life. The writing's concise and the layout is so well done. Often, self-published books fall victim to layout/structural issues, but Leigh (as usual!) did her homework and devoted a year to getting it right. Yes, true to her philosophy, she did everything herself rather than hiring out the various parts of production. That meant learning many new opensource software programs and diving into self-publishing head first. The results speak for themselves.

I highly recommend this book.

Both Educational and Entertaining - Worth Reading!

If you like Barbara Kingsolver's Animal, Vegetable, Miracle, then you are going to love Leigh Tate's book. It is not a repeat of her popular blog, 5 Acres & A Dream (which I have read since the beginning), but a very concise telling of the planning, work, research and love that she and her husband, Dan, have put into making their 5 acres as self-sustaining as possible. Not only does she explain their successes, but also their failures in order to help others who want to become self-sustaining as much as possible. The book is enjoyable to read and there are over 140 images to help explain and show you what they have done are are doing. And recipes!!! I will be telling everyone I know about this book. Thank you, Leigh, for writing this book.

A Maigret interrogation -- otherwise known as "The Singing Session"

Penguin UK is in the midst of issuing new translations of all seventy-five of Georges Simenon's Maigret novels, one per month. THE JUDGE'S HOUSE was originally published in 1942; in its earlier English translation it was titled "Maigret in Exile". Reading it was sufficiently entertaining and sufficiently literary that I probably will indulge myself with a few others from the new Penguin series.

Detective Chief Inspector Jules Maigret has been exiled from the Police Judiciaire in Paris for unexplained reasons. He now toils in Luçon, in the Vendée. A curious old woman visits him to report that for two days there has been a body on the floor of an upstairs room of a judge's house in L'Aiguillon, a small village on the coast. Maigret accompanies the woman to L'Aiguillon and arrives in time to find the judge, in the middle of the night, dragging a corpse wrapped in a couple of sacks towards the ocean. The judge turns out to be very polite and extraordinarily unflappable, offering Maigret armagnac while he calmly explains matters in his library in front of a crackling blaze in the fireplace. That's the beginning to a rather peculiar tale of not one but two murders; a pair of headstrong young men who make their livings in the mussel fields; two mentally unbalanced, nymphomaniac women, mother and daughter; and a remote coastal community. It culminates with an unorthodox and riveting interrogation by Maigret.

Decades ago I read a fair amount of "detective fiction", but for some time now the genre hasn't held much interest for me. About a year ago I read my first Maigret novel by Simenon; it was engaging enough that I tried THE JUDGE'S HOUSE and, as mentioned, I suspect I will return for more. What's different about Simenon and Maigret? I don't yet have a satisfactory answer. Part of it surely has to do with the straightforward character of Maigret, who is stolid and rather ordinary, without the machismo of most leading men of the genre. Another part of the attraction has to do with the way Simenon tells his stories, with an accelerated pace but little of the tough, cynical prose of American noir fiction.

I do know that I have good company in admiring Simenon. The first page of this volume contains eleven blurbs from literary types -- among them William Faulkner ("I love reading Simenon. He makes me think of Chekhov."); André Gide ("The greatest of all, the most genuine novelist we have had in literature."); and Anita Brookner ("The mysteries of the human personality are revealed in all their disconcerting complexity."). In addition, I remember from a biography of T.S. Eliot that he too was an avid reader of Simenon.

I don't know whether the initial fault was Simenon's or the translator's (Howard Curtis), but there are two inconsistencies that Penguin should not have allowed to go into print. On the very same page (page 6), the old woman who sets the tale in motion tells Maigret that (a) she has a house in L'Aiguillon "near the harbour", and (b) that "the village of L'Aiguillon is quite far from the harbour". She also tells him that "only about twenty" people live in L'Aiguillon, but as the novel proceeds it is clear that at least ten times that number must live there, as there are two hotels, twenty or thirty working mussel boats, and dozens of schoolchildren.

You would not want this nosy pair for neighbors!

Old Didine and her retired husband spend hours spying on their neighbor the judge. Finally it pays off! They spot a dead man on the floor of the judge's house. Didine rushes off to fetch Inspector Maigret.

Maigret has been exiled to this dull coastal town full of mussel farmers due to some unnamed infraction. He's dying of boredom, and a murder case comes as a veritable gift from heaven. Maigret hastens to Didine's house, and sure enough, next door the judge is dragging a man's body down to the water...

There are many delicious moments in this little novel: Maigret's guilty enjoyment of the judge's cozy sitting room and fine brandy, although the judge may be a murderer; old Didine's spiteful spouting of scandal about her neighbor; Maigret's loathing of his vulgar assistant who stinks of brilliantine...

A high point of the plot is Maigret's interrogation of two young mussel farmers. No one knows where he's going with his questions. One minute he's kind and sympathetic, the next minute he's putting on a fit of fury while angrily guzzling wine. This is the bear-like Maigret at his trickiest and most unpredictable.

I love Simenon's style, his ability to convey atmosphere in a few terse sentences, his internal dialog that breaks off so suggestively. The Judge's House (first published in 1942) is a little gem, rich in quirky characters and subtle humor.

another great Simenon mystery

An observant old lady alerts Detective Chief Inspector Maigret to some strange goings-on at her neighbor’s house in the 1942 novel The Judge’s House (also published as Maigret in Exile). And what Didine Hulot has seen at Judge Forlacroix’s house in L’Aiguillion is a dead body. She ensures that Maigret is on the scene when the retired judge tries to dispose of the corpse. And that’s just the beginning of this suspenseful novel, full of twists and turns. One of the best of Georges Simenon’s wonderful novels. And if you get to listen to the book narrated by Gareth Armstrong, so much the better.
