The Grove Encyclopedia of Islamic Art and Architecture lends a new perspective to a discipline that has become critically important since the publication of its parent set, the 34-volume Dictionary of Art (1996). Bloom and Blair, Islam and central Asia editors for the parent set, used as their point of departure the Dictionary of Art’s 468-page article on Islamic art plus Islam-related content from other articles, including Arms and armor, Jewelry, and Papercuts. They define Islamic art as that “made by artists or artisans whose religion was Islam, for patrons who lived in predominantly Muslim lands, or for purposes that are restricted or peculiar to a Muslim population or a Muslim setting.” Within that framework, the encyclopedia encompasses “art and architecture in southern Europe, northern Africa, and west, central, and south Asia over 14 centuries.” The goal was to “make the relatively obscure field of Islamic art as accessible as possible to the widest possible audience” and to “encourage readers to explore other aspects of Islamic civilization and the interrelationships between Islamic art and other artistic traditions.” The encyclopedia contains 1,600 articles by 375 scholars and more than 600 photographs, black-and-white reproductions, color plates, drawings, maps, and floor plans. Entries often begin with a brief definition and then place the topic within the context of Islamic art. Some include alternate vocabulary, such as the 14 words used for Caravanserai in locations from Baghdad (dar) to Fez (funduq). Articles on broad topics are long—the editors note the book-length Architecture—and headnotes list their divisions, usually chronological and geographic. Many of the extensive bibliographies (Berber, Calligraphy) include items published after 2005. Bibliographies also include carefully selected Web sites, such as the complete digital archive of Gertrude Bell’s photos, diaries, and letters. This set is an exemplary spin-off. About the Author

Jonathan M. Bloom and Sheila S. Blair share the Norma Jean Calderwood University Professorship of Islamic and Asian Art at Boston College and the Hamad bin Khalifa Endowed Chair of Islamic Art at Virginia Commonwealth University. A husband-and-wife team, they study all aspects of Islamic art from the seventh century to modern times. Bloom is particularly interested in the arts of the medieval Mediterranean region as well as the history of paper. His most recent book is Arts of the City Victorious (2007), a study of the art and architecture of the Fatimid period in North Africa and Egypt. Blair is particularly interested in the arts of Iran and Central Asia, the Mongols, and the history of the Islamic book. Her latest book is Islamic Calligraphy (2006), for which she won several international awards. In addition to their hundreds of individual articles, reviews, and monographs, they have written or edited seven books jointly. They also served as consultants to the 3-hour documentary Islam: Empire of Faith, shown nationally on PBS, and are convenors of the Hamad bin Khalifa Biennial Symposium on Islamic Art. Both Bloom and Blair received their Ph.D.s in Middle Eastern Studies and Fine Arts from Harvard University in 1980.

About the Author
How did people escape on the Underground Railroad? What was it like to land on Ellis Island?How did it feel to travel the Oregon Trail in a covered wagon? Ellen Levine has revealed worldsof fascinating adventure with her nonfiction books for young readers.

Although Ellen Levine enjoys reading and writing fiction, most of her books for young readershave been nonfiction. “Writing nonfiction lets me in behind the scenes of the story. I enjoylearning new things and meeting new people, even if they lived 200 years ago.”

“Real heroes,” Levine says, “aren't necessarily on TV or in the news. They can be ordinarypeople who are willing to take risks for causes they believe in. Nonfiction offers a way tointroduce young readers to real people who have shown tremendous courage, even when facedwith great danger. All of us have the potential. And one doesn't have to be a grown-up,” sheadds.

When she's not writing, Levine likes to share the excitement of research and the importance ofaccuracy with young readers. “Many young people think research is dull; you go to anencyclopedia, copy information, give it a title, and call it a report.” Using her books asexamples, Ellen explains how to get other, more interesting information. “I may not mention theexact words, but I talk to young people about primary and secondary sources. If I'm speakingwith third graders, I ask them, 'Where would I go if I wanted to find out what it's like to be athird grader?' Most will say, 'Read a book.' But when they say, 'Ask a third grader,' I knowthey've understood what I mean by a primary source of inspiration.”

While doing research in Wyoming for Ready, Aim, Fire!, her biography of Annie Oakley,she got to hold the gun Ms. Oakley is believed to have shot in the presence of the Queen ofEngland. “It gave me such a strong feeling about this person,” she says. “That's part of research,too.”

Ellen Levine is the author of many acclaimed books, both fiction and nonfiction. Among them:If You Traveled West in a Covered Wagon, If Your Name Was Changed at Ellis Island, I Hate English!, If You Lived at the Time of Martin Luther King, and Secret Missions. Her recent book, Freedom's Children: Young Civil Rights Activists Tell Their Own Stories, was named one of the Ten Best Children's Books of the Year by The New York Times, and Best Book for Young Adults by the American Library Association.

An excellent source of UGRR info for children and adults!

As the director of an Underground Railroad museum, I am always looking for clear, concise materials for the public to use. This book is being added to our new education program, for use in elementary schools in our area. The facts are presented in an easy-to-read fashion, and anyone, adult or child, is able to pick up valuable information without being threatened by the reading level of the book. The text is not condescending in any fashion, yet moves easily enough for a 5-year-old child to sit through a reading of the entire book and ask questions provoked by the material being presented. I would recommend "If You Traveled the Underground Railroad" to anyone interested in giving children something of substance to read. We sell these books in our museum and cannot keep the supply high enough to meet the demand!

In the book, If You traveled on the Underground Railroad, it tells you how fugitives got the Underground Railroad started and what they did on the way. One question was,"Why did they call it the Underground Railroad?" "A man named Tice Davids was running from his owner that lived in Kentucky. Davids swam across a river to get to a small town in Ohio. The owner was hot on his trail. Davids suddenly disappeared whn he went around a turn. The owner searched everywhere he could have been, but he couldn't find him. He gave up and went home. When he got back, he told his other family members that he "must've went on an Underground Railroad!" The book tells you what happened if the slaves and conductors were caught. An amazing beginning to an awesome new series!

I can't believe how much I loved this book! I really had no idea what to expect but Frenzy honestly blew me away.

Casey L. Bond breathed new life into some tired themes, and I was quite literally in a frenzy to devour Frenzy. It was a vivid, detailed, wonderful story of heartache, struggle, and love. I l adored Porschia, I wanted to throttle her mother (that woman!), and I loved the tender moments Porschia shared with her father and brother. Oh, and Mrs. Dillinger? My favorite!

Let's not forget the men in this book (and honestly, it would be impossible). Saul is tender and strong and protective without being an alpha, which was incredbily refreshing. I normally root for the bad boy but I am cheering for Saul. By the end of Frenzy, I was in love with Tage, whose struggle to cling to humanity broke my heart. And Roman? Smoking hot and dangersous as hell. There is a bit of a love triangle in these books (sometimes more like a rectangle) and I normally can't stand love triangles, but this one wasn't annoying because Porschia's feelings are always defined and we know who she wants to end up with.

I will say that it takes a little bit of time to fully grasp what is happening. What is a rotation? Why does Porschia wear colonial-style dresses? Why would night-walkers help the town? But just stick with it. Everything reveals itself by the middle of the story.

The writing is fabulous. The dialogue is smooth and authentic. The world-building is fantastic; I could see everything clearly in my mind. And the emotions that the writing evoked were abundant. I think I highlighted half of the book's words because they were either funny, poignant, or just simply gorgeous.

I can't recommend this book highly enough!

I loved this book!! I absolutely cannot wait for the next book in the series because I must know what happens next!! Casey L Bond is the queen of the cliffhanger...
A whole new spin on dystopian with vampires!! Amazing characters that you will love, love to hate and love again! Talk about character whiplash! This story has everything! Cannot recommend this highly enough!

Surprise Twists and a Brilliant New Take on Old Genres

I'm a long-time fan of Casey L. Bond, and when I heard she had a zombie/vampire mashup novel, I was intrigued as hell. I knew that if anyone could pull off something of this magnitude, it would be Casey. Not only did I get to beta-read this book, I also bought it when it hit the shelves so I could read it after it was edited. Enough of my gabbing. Let's get to the good stuff.

From a Reader's Perspective:
I liked the sassy main character, Porschia. She made me feel like there was hope when I was pretty sure none existed. There she sits with no technology, a broken world, and people surrounding her she can't trust. Yet, she's driven, sees the silver lining around the storm cloud, and loves unconditionally. I'd like to know her in real life. World building was amazing. I could picture the small village with its simple inhabitants who've been forced back to the ways of the pilgrims. There was never a dull moment, and I often found myself gripping the edge of my seat, waiting to see what would happen next. Pacing was perfect. This is a shorter story that you should be able to read in one sitting. Did I see the end coming? No. No I didn't. I was left with my jaw on the floor. I can't wait to read Frantic.

From an Editor's Perspective:
There are several tense jumps, comma splices, and run-on sentences, but nothing that threw me out of the story, and they were scattered out enough that I could ignore them. Most readers probably wouldn't even notice. Story line is consistent throughout.

1 Star for giving me a truly unique story.
1 Star for keeping me guessing.
1 Star for awesome world building.
1 Star for pacing and that amazing ending.

Overall, 4.5 out of 5 stars. I always round up, not down, so this book gets a 5. Recommended for those looking for a new twist on a couple of old genres.

Ranging from prose lyrics of less than a page to much lengthier (but still lyrical) fictions, these stories are eloquent testimonials to the status of Mexican-American women. Cisneros ( The House on Mango Street ) introduces a cast of Chicanas from the environs of San Antonio, Tex., letting us eavesdrop on a series of interior monologues as well crafted as they are expressive. She begins with the self-conscious yet spontaneous effusions of young girls ("You laughing something into my ear that tickles, and me going Ha Ha Ha Ha"), then turns to preadolescents and young women; her speakers evince a shared, uneasy awareness that their self-worth depends on a loyalty to Mexico strained, all the same, by the realities of their lives up North. The restless vamp of "Never Marry a Mexican" feels "ridiculous" as "a Mexican girl who couldn't even speak Spanish," and cultivates a contempt for her white lover ("nude as a pearl. You've lost your train of smoke") and his wife ("alive under the flannel and down, and smelling like milk and hand cream")--but she is not sure just what she is envying. In this sensitively structured suite of sketches, however, Cisneros's irony defers to her powers of observation, so that feminism and cultural imperialism, while important issues here, do not overwhelm the narrative. In this collection of Mexican-American stories, Cisneros addresses the reader in a voice that is alternately buoyant, strong, funny, and sad. The brief vignettes of the opening piece, "My Lucy Friend Who Smells Like Corn," are tiles in a mosaic. Taken together, these vignettes give a vivid, colorful picture of life on the Texas/Mexico border. Family ties are strong: aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents are all present. The stories are often about the romantic dreams of young girls longing to escape stifling small-town life who discover that things are not much different on the other side of the border. Cisneros has an acute eye for the telling detail that reveals the secrets and the dreams of her characters. She writes with humor and love about people she knows intimately.

Sandra Cisneros, the author of "Woman Hollering Creek" gives us a vibrant variety of stories which reveals some of the strength, true love, and wisdom within women. Cisneros, as a gifted writer and a storyteller, shares stories filled with moments of pain and joy. Women Hollering Creek, offers the life experiences of women who have lived both the Mexican and American life. These delicious, poetic stories bring alive beautiful characters (multifaceted women) who experience true life situations. Each character portrayed in this book, go throughout a catharsis full of pain, anguish, love, hope, and ecstasy. Cisneros is a brave author who shows a unique vision of a women's heart. Her wise work constructed by her poetic style, shows her power as a woman and a writer. In this book, she takes you down a river of sadness, with a long ribbon of laughter. An example of her style is this passage that captivated me, "Your eyes are beautiful, you said. You said they were the darkest eyes you'd ever seen and kissed each one as if they were capable of miracles. And after you left, I wanted to scoop them out with a spoon, place them on a plate under these blue blue skies, food for the blackbirds." It is very fortunate that I read this book, because it has given me so much inspiration. Cisneros as a Latina women, has inspired me (another Latino) to continue on my long journey of becoming a writer. Her beautiful prose gives the reader a sense of the world she brings alive. For example, "The laughing sound of the river and canals, and the high melancholy voice of the wind and the branches of the tall pine." I suggest that every writer should read this book. Another reason why I recommend this book is because it has shown me the astonishing perspective of a woman which no matter what, a man can not have. Me, as a man, would never experience what a women experiences. This book is very valuable to me, since it provides the opportunity to see the inner beauty and strength of a Latina women. A third reason why I recommend this book, is because it invites you to imagine and taste the Mexican culture through a woman's eyes. Woman Hollering Creek, served me especially and can be a great resource for others to learn about Mexican lifestyle. This book informed me more about that romantic, joyful, and traditional Mexican life. The rating I give this book is a ten, because it has helped me understand where women are coming from a little better. I have gained more respect for women who are writers because she gives her heart to her readers.

Poetically written exploration of women's experiences

This is the book which made me a feminist during my undergraduate years, and on which I subsequently wrote my senior English thesis. No author of short stories can turn a phrase the way Cisneros can, and her poetic evocations of different stages of life from young girl to mature young woman shed a multi-faceted light on Hispanic women's experiences in which every paragraph becomes thought-provoking.
In addition, read as a whole thematically, this anthology can be seen as similar to the sort of artistic coming-of-age novels such as Hermann Hesse's Peter Camenzind. The key turning point in this development may be the story "Little Miracles, Kept Promises," which is a series of letters left at the shrine of La Virgin de Guadelupe. This reveals the many layers of the shrine, which is the site of an old Aztec goddess with whom Cisneros identified, and who allows for a new revelation of feminine power in the Mexican heritage which comes out for the rest of the work.
However you choose to read it, this is a collection which will both delight and challenge all who come prepared.

Short stories that sparkle

Woman Hollering Creek is a powerful collection of short stories from Sandra Cisneros. One of the main strengths of her writing is her ability to make her characters (especially her first person narrators) very accessable. She is able to get into the minds of, and portray, many of her characters in a very lifelike way. She seems especially adept at dealing with the children in her stories. For instance, the story "Eleven" (one of the many gems in this collection) is the account of a little girl on her eleventh birthday. It deals with helplessness of a child in the face of an authoritive adult. It also looks at a childs preoccupation with the opinion of his/her peers. Cisneros manages the tale in such a way that it seems inevitable that the reader will identify with the girl. That, in itself, is a sort of mastery of craft.
These stories range from impressionistic, two-page shorts that read like poems, to longer, more detailed accounts of relationships. As with any collection of short stories, there are those that are more successful than others (in other words those that you'll relate to better than others). However, all of the tales have a sort of vivid life to them; and, in all, I think that this is a very well rounded collection.
Perhaps the only real point of difficulty that readers may face in this collection is Cisneros' use of spanish phrases throughout the book. However, don't let such things discourage you. Many of these phrases can be understood within the context in which they are written (so they aren't too much of a stumbling block). Also, these stories are too good to let a few words discourage you from reading this book. I would recomend this book to anybody who is interested in the struggles of childhood (especially that of minority children), as well as the pains and pleasures of intimate relationships. I would also recomend this book to lovers of good, colorful short stories.

About the Author
Takashi Amano has been a leader in aquarium design for more than two decades. He established the Aqua Design Amano Company in 1982 to promote natural aquarium design and developed a line of products to make creating and maintaining a nature aquarium easier. Though he lives and works in Niigata, Japan, Amano travels extensively to study natural aquatic habitats.

More of the same, in a lesser format.

There are multiple reasons I give this book two stars, but the summary my long-winded reasons below is that there is a very high bar for Takashi Amano books, and compared to his other works, this title does not reach that bar.
I will not compare this book to his fourth published English language book - Aquarium Plant Paradise - because of how different and conventionalized that title is, but rather to his first three English language Nature Aquarium World books.

This book is very slightly smaller in format that his first three books (Nature Aquarium World: 1994, and Nature Aquarium World 2 & 3: 1997, the latter two were originally published as a single volume in Japan). It leans towards a horizontal book format (his first book was upright and the other two were square), and although it can be opened flat to look at photos spanning both pages, the pages quickly separate from their glue binding! The stitched binding holds, but as this book has been published for only a short time, I cannot assume those thin double threads will hold in heavily used copies. This is the first of his books released by TFH that was not manufactured in the US, and it shows. While TFH books generally have weak-feeling spines, they hold up and bindings used to be guaranteed for 10 years; now the company provides a trendier logo and omits any quality guarantee. This book is manufactured in China. The paper is thin compared to the nice stock used previously and the ink printing is very cheap (low resolution) compared to the books printed in the '90s. In cases where aquarium photos are present in both books, you can see the difference in quality when laying the books side by side. Most unfortunately, the patented Foto-Glaze in all of TFH's previous Amano books has been omitted. This means that not only do the compositions show less depth (good laminate enhances color markedly), but the cheap ink smudges with fingerprints easily. Many pages are black, and this also readily shows finger smudges. Lack of Foto-Glaze also makes it harder to position the pictures in strong lighting without catching glare.

The colors in all photos of this book have been retouched by Amano, and many appear oversaturated. While the compositions are still beautiful, the combination of cheap ink, no Foto-Glaze for depth enhancement, and colors that are either too light, dark, or neon, leads to a lessened visual experience. Also regrettable is that most of the photos in this book are portrayed smaller than in previous volumes. Whereas previous volumes showcased one tank per two facing pages, this book shows two or three tanks per two facing pages, and often with more margin space, hence smaller tank images. Small image size is the cost of the deco design of the book. For those who like cube tanks, you will be disappointed by the fact that some of your favorite tanks are portrayed in space smaller than 4x4". Details cannot be seen in these images.

There's the dirt, now for the sparkle. The cover is attractive and seems durable (besides the faulty glue binding), although there is no publisher shrinkwrap (probably good for the environment) to protect the dust jacket during shipping. The pictorial cover boards (same images as dj) are the slightly reflective paper used on many Chinese natural history books, which I think looks very nice. The typesetting is appealing though maybe too small for some, and while there are plenty of editorial errors in the typical Amano data columns (spelling and omission/misidentification follies), the info is all there. While still no indication is given of how long a tank was set up prior to being photographed, and ratios of soil types are not provided, measurements are now given in inches and Fahrenheit instead of cm and C (aquarium volume is not provided at all). Page numbering is discrete, although it blatantly interrupts several photographs throughout the book (those photos centered to the bottom right corner).

Tanks are pictured in the order in which they were photographed. This is very interesting because you can see changes in trends in Amano's style through the years. A strong correlation with the openeing of his gallery, in which tanks viewed from all sides are showcased, and more frequent use of light, open backgrounds rather than black ones overgrown with stem plants, is quickly seen. Certain plants become more or less common in his compositions. Overall, his aquaria appear much less dynamic through time than those among competitors in his annual Nature Aquarium contest (pictured in TFH magazine), though this is not surprising since his tanks are the work of a single person's creativity. Still, it does feel as you go through the book that you come to look at more and more of the same thing, particularly the Wabisabi rock/plains aquaria. The fish species he uses are definitely on the redundant side.

This book provides minimal information (approximately 6-8 pages) on how to set up certain aspects of a Nature Aquarium, plus tidbits distributed throughout his narratives, and will leave those without a pre-established sense of natural arrangements and/or a green thumb (aquamarine thumb?) clambering to learn "HOW!?" The book is useful only to enhance your own creativity - if you do not already have a large dose of natural knowhow, you will get virtually no applied help from this book. This is as it was in Amano's previous books, and since he gives the disclaimer that his are picture books, you can't fault any of the volumes for their lack of applied instruction. To buy an Amano book expecting step-by-step lessons is like buying a pictorial book on Zen gardens expecting to walk away knowing how to build your own. You can look at the finished product, and learn certain fundamental intricacies behind some of its aspects, but won't likely get much more. The only Amano book to provide basic instruction for construction is Aquarium Plant Paradise, and this one does so in a very incomplete, anglicized fashion.

I think a pricetag half that of the publisher's would be a fair deal for this book, but its list price is too high for what the buyer gets, particularly considering the more eloquently done volumes produced in the US all retailed for less than this one (35.95, 39.95, 29.95 respectively, though I guess it does cost money to float books over from Chinese factories...). Based on the quality of production and presentation, I rank this as the least important of his Nature Aquarium World books to view, but reverse this advice in terms of comprehensiveness. Previous quality considered or not, there are so many beautiful aquaria in this book that are not to be missed by plant tank fans. Know the flaws going in, and you almost certainly won't regret purchase. Weird thing to close with about a two star book, I know.

A book with good content but terrible binding/printing

This is beautiful book with lots of pictures.
It gives a glimpse of Amano's journey over the period of time.
The photographs are too good to be true.
It was really surprising for me that Amano still uses film camera and not digital camera.
The only let down with this book is quality of paper and binding of the book.
My copy was not received in good condition, binding was damaged.
Overall a nice book and I got lots of idea for my planted tank.

Gives you a goal to work towards

This is an amazing book filled with a very large number of pictures of tanks and specifications of size/equipment/list of Flora and Fauna. It is great as a source of inspiration and as a goal to strive towards as you keep your own aquarium. The tanks covered range in size from small 20 inches to very large 100 inches and more, so there is something for you no matter what your tank size.

Also the time period covered is large enough, that you can see subtle changes in style as Mr Amano himself progresses in his hobby.

The book makes a great coffee table book, and a good conversation starter.

His other picture books are pretty expensive, so the price was a very pleasant surprise.

Now as then a cultural curiosity, the resurrected reminiscences of 1920s Latin Quarter model "Kiki" appear with the original prefaces by artist Tsuguharu Foujita and Ernest Hemingway, the latter of whom described her as "a woman who was never a lady at any time." The French edition was released in 1929; an English translation was denied entry by U.S. customs the next year on grounds of obscenity, owing to the reproductions of paintings by Foujita and photographs by Man Ray that accompanied the slim text. An illegitimate village waif raised in poverty by her grandmother, Alice Prin was born in 1901. At 12 she joined her mother in Paris only to go off on her own at 14 as model for, then mistress to, a generation of sculptors, painters and photographers. Merely an amateur at more professional entertainment, she nevertheless sang in sleazy clubs, appeared in nine films, danced in Fernand Leger's Ballet Mecanique. Offered freely, her svelte body brought her fame without fortune. When journalist Henri Brocca arranged for publication of her memoir, and news spread that for 30 francs, one could acquire an autographed book and a kiss from Kiki, men discarded their dignity in the rush. Once depression and war put an end to her brand of frivolity, she contended that all she required was "an onion, a bit of bread, and a bottle of red," and she usually found "somebody to offer me that." Nearly forgotten, she survived into 1951. Putnam's 1930 translation evokes Kiki's childlike qualities. Insubstantial despite the prefaces, dozens of illustrations, including the author's own naif pictures, and?as supplement?three autobiographical articles for a Paris paper in 1950 that repeat much of the memoir, Kiki's offering is more artifact than art. Kluver and Martin are the coauthors of Kiki's Paris.

Billy Kluver and Jule Martin, the editors of a lively new edition, Kiki's Memoirs, have included fresh biographical material, familiar as well as lesser-known photographs of Kiki by Man Ray, portraits by other artists and reproductions of Kiki's own paintings. Souvenirs of Kiki's Memoirs

Being a veritable Kiki virgin before I read this book, I found Kiki's Memoirs more than helpful in showing the atmosphere of 1920's Paris. I did, however, agree with Ernest Hemingway's sentiments from his introdution-it is impossible to translate Kiki's words very well. It seems like Samuel Putnam was unable to get more than four sentences out without putting in an exclamation mark. This breaks the narrative up considerably. I would have given this book three stars, but I loved the Man Ray photos in it. The real strength of this book lies in the artwork.

A Pretty Good Book

I recently started reading Ms. Reid's books. This starts with the bride being jilted just two hours before the ceremony. The bearer of the bad news is the older brother of the bridegroom. To help the girl save face, the older brother proposes himself as a substitute groom. The book is better than it sounds. Of course there is a HEA. Enjoy the book.

Reid has created a hero worth falling in love with and a heroine who is his perfect complement. Shaan is left at the altar by her handsome groom, Piers, who marries another woman. Piers' brooding brother, Rafe, steps in and convinces the devastated bride to marry him instead. Shaan is determined not to see the truth---that Rafe loves her deeply---because she is in a distraught haze over Piers' desertion and over her belief that Rafe is really in love with the woman Piers has married. Rafe uses whatever means necessary---bullying, coddling, spoiling---to restore Shaan's self-esteem and force her out of her despondency. The newspapers add to Shaan's unhappiness by reporting that the wealthy brothers have switched brides, which, coupled with other twists and turns, leads to a final confrontation involving the three major characters. Why did Piers leave? Does he love Shaan? Does Shaan love Rafe or will her heart forever belong to Piers? What is the relationship between Piers' wife and Rafe? What really caused all of these problems to begin with? This book keeps you turning page after page to discover the answers. The plot is delicious, the characters are very well-drawn and the book is incredibly satisfying. I dispose of most Harlequin books right after I read them. This one is a keeper. Buy it!

Strong writing, weak characters - 3.5 stars if I could

Pros:
- The writer is very skillful, and brings the locations (Hong Kong in particular) brilliantly to life and kept me invested enough in the story of two really damaged people to finish the book.
- The best friend character, who is the only sane person in the book, was fun to have around, if only as a novelty. For some reason in this kind of Harlequin novel (older Mediterranean man meets meek, mild virgin) there are almost never any decent parents, siblings or friends around- they tend to be populated by horrible people (my suspicion is that with a solid 60% of the genre having one person with a lick of sense around would make it impossible for the stories to happen as written).
- The setting was really dramatic and intense. I genuinely wanted to know what would happen next- all credit is given to the writer for ensuring that.

Cons:
- The hero's actions are absolutely ridiculous. Him loving her from the beginning is sweet enough (I guess), but bullying a severely traumatized 22-year old into marriage is really heartless, no matter what the circumstances. I think that the setting merited a longer book, one which would have fully fleshed out the consequences of his actions instead of moving directly into the HEA (a la Susan Mallery- she does a GREAT job writing heroes who have to redeem themselves).
- I have to agree with another reviewer, the heroine really is spineless. I know she's traumatized, but to let the brother of the man who you feel ruined and defiled you take your life over makes absolutely no sense. At all. She has no ambitions and is totally content to let pretty much everyone else in the book run her life. She's pretty, but not particularly smart, savvy or in possession of large amounts of common sense. Total doormat.

I enjoyed reading this book, and even re-read it when I was done, so I could see if the ending stood up. It did. Unfortunately the hero and heroine just aren't really up to par- there is no way to cure the massive case of plot-convenient stupidity that the book rests on to keep moving. I'd recommend it if you love this author particularly, but otherwise you are ok taking a pass on this.
