Awesome gadget book for the woodworker

This is a great book for the woodworker looking to make wooden gadgets that actually work! The neat thing about this book is that while the plans contain dimensions, they are printed 1:1. So if you don't like the huge locks (some are close to 5" in diameter), you can xerox and reduce the plans and make a smaller one (without having to recalculate; just cut on the lines).

Once you examine a couple of the designs, you can see how you can make your own mechanisms for your own designs.

A re-release of both Detweiller books in one package

This is basically both of Mr Detweiller's previous books combined. I already had his first book and wanted to buy the second book but the used price was ridiculus. The second book is out of print and the economic principle of supply vs. demand is alive and well. Luckily, this "third" book was released and I bought it instead. Don't expect to find plans for the lock on the cover. It isn't in the book.

Nice retelling of the story for little ones

This isn't an "early reader" book, but a regular story for parents to read to children. It tells the whole story of the movie in abridged but comprehensive form -- all the main plot points are covered, but appropriately for little kids, some of the details are glossed over. Still, Jedi does feature a few scarier scenes in the movie (with Jabba's palace, the rancor, and the Emperor and Force lightning) and so if your smaller child might be scared by those, maybe stick to A New Hope or Empire.

As with the other two books, the artwork is excellent - bold, expressive, and, dare I say it, cute (except the rancor, of course). Everyone is drawn in a bit more modern cartoon style, but they're all recognizable with lots of familiar scenes and details on every page. The sail barge scene, in a two-page spread, features Lando falling off the barge, the droids stuck in the sand, Boba Fett heading into the Sarlacc pit, and Luke with his lightsaber. Even the text is nicely done, with sound-effect words in bold or colored fonts for emphasis. As a geek, I'm happy enough for my kids to be learning all the little details like who the Gamorrean guards are or who Admiral Ackbar is. My 5 and 2.5 year old boys absolutely love this and study every page carefully. Very pleasantly surprised by this version of the story!

Complete movie in tiny form again (with a Lucas Change)

Even these have the Lucas changes :) I bought all three of the original trilogy. They are all great. I was looking for a way to introduce my daughter to the Star Wars Universe. This was perfect. This is the entire story of Return of the Jedi. She has learned all of the characters from these books. They are perfect for the little ones. One thing to note if you are a purest. The last page shows the Jedi ghosts of Ben, Yoda and Anakin after the battle on Endor. And yes it is the Young version of the Anakin and not the older. When I showed it to a friend he immediately asked if Han shoots first in the first book :) Either way, great books check them out for the price.

I love that all the movies are now in kid-friendly books.

And these are actually 'books'. Multi-syllable words like Imperial and captured and Millennium Falcon. When read by a parent, this doesn't matter so much, but for a kid who would read this on their own, they would need to be a more advanced reader.

the artwork and storyline are more playful and cute, very appealing to a younger audience who is new to Star Wars. And for some scenes, like the Sarlacc pit where Boba Fett gets eaten, the Sarlacc burps. I've added a photo of this to this review.

Overall, it's not scary and keeps a light and playful tone throughout.

About the Author

Mahmood Nahvi is a professor of electrical engineering at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, California. Dr. Hahvi's areas of special interest and expertise include network theory, control theory, communications engineering, signal processing, neural networks, adaptive control and learning in synthetic and living systems, communication and control in the central nervous system, and engineering education. In the area of engineering education, he has developed computer modules for electric circuits, signals, and systems which improve teaching and learning of the fundamentals of electrical engineering.

Joseph A. Edminister is Professor Emeritus of Electrical Engineering from the University of Akron in Akron, Ohio, where he also served as an assistant dean and acting dean of engineering. Professor Edminister is a registered Professional Engineer in Ohio, a member of the bar in Ohio, and a registered patent attorney. He is also the author of Schaum's Outline of Theory and Problems of Electromagnetic.

Excellent as Textbook

I have thoroughly read a few introductory textbooks on electrical engineering, but none of them really comes close to Schaums Electric Circuits in terms of helpfulness or clarity. This book can be used as an independent textbook because of the clarity of the presentation and the completeness of the material. Great attention has been paid to signs and polarities in the circuits, unlike some other textbooks which are sometimes frustratingly vague about polarities in their circuit explanations. As a result, some subtle things have been clarified for me, e.g. about transformers. The solved problems are especially helpful because some of them develop the theory further. The attention to precision, as well as its helpful intuitive explanations and a good selection of problems, makes this book a best buy. After buying this book, I no longer need one or two other bestselling textbooks, whose titles I would prefer not to mention. Even now, as a full-time electrical engineer, I keep on referring to this most helpful book.

Excellent supplemental textbook on circuit analysis and design topics

This is an excellent study guide for electrical engineering students that will serve them well in their two-semester DC circuits sequence, linear circuits, electronic circuit design sequence, and power circuits. It is another one of those Schaum's outlines that is clear and complete enough to double as a textbook on the topic of circuit analysis and design. It starts out defining basic electric circuit concepts and terms such as potential, charge, current, resistance, capacitance, and inductance. It then moves on to circuit laws and then circuit analysis methods. It then explains the amplifier model in terms of components that have already been defined, and from there describes the operational amplifier and shows how to design using this device. The chapter on waveforms and signals is an excellent one, and is a topic often overlooked and shortchanged in most electrical engineering textbooks. The chapters on first-order and higher-order circuits do an excellent job of venturing into the world of linear RLC circuits and shows how to use calculus and differential equations to solve for the voltage and current equations of these types of circuits. Included also are more direct methods of analysis including complex frequency and pole-zero plots. The next major topic to be broached is that of analysis and design of power circuits. This is an often ignored subject in the electrical engineering curriculum, and the two chapters are good foundations on the topic. Besides just explaining polyphase power circuits, the outline actually takes the time to explain why such circuits are desirable when power generation is the goal. The next three chapters do some clean up on miscellaneous circuit analysis and design topics - frequency response, two-port networks and their characteristics, and mutual inductance and transformers, which is the basis of courses on electromechanical machines. The chapter on mutual inductance is the weakest chapter in the book, with less explanation than in the rest of the outline. There is a good chapter on using the industry standard Spice and PSpice software for circuit design. The final two chapters are applied chapters on the Laplace and Fourier transforms and their use in circuit analysis and design. For those whose basic mathematics may be rusty, the appendices cover basic matrix algebra and the mathematics of complex numbers.

I used the first edition of this outline in the late 70's to help iron out concepts that were not clearly presented in my undergraduate textbooks. I kept it around over the years to serve as a reference. I just recently upgraded to the current fourth edition, and the subject matter and organization of material has changed over the years but not the high quality of the content. I highly recommend this outline to undergraduate electrical engineering students who want a high quality supplemental textbook that will serve them from their sophomore year until graduation. One reviewer lamented that there were quite a few errors in the solved problem sections. However, this review was very old - 1999 I believe - and was written before this current fourth edition was written. I have not found any errors in the solutions so far, so apparently this latest edition has cleared up that past problem.

This book is a "keeper".

I bought Prof. Edminister's earliar Electric Circuits book when I took his class in college over 20 years ago. I learned far more from his book than any other book on electric circuits. This book belongs on the bookshelf of every practicing electrical engineer. I've referred to Edminister's book more often than any other engineering book I own. The clear exposition and the terrific depth of solved example problems make this book a "keeper". -Rick Lyons- author of "Understanding Digital Signal Processing"

Hypnotized - The complete series

I loved the hypnotized complete series. Ari and Cody make the perfect couple there a team working as a team is what save the ranch. I was glad to see Terence got what he deserved too bad Linda was not charged right along with him. but leave it to Ari and she put Linda in her place.

A must-have for all neuro-nerds !

Neurology, being a branch of medicine that is deeply rooted in tradition - particularly European - authors of clinical examination textbooks in neurology fall prey to the temptation of producing essays, forgetting that their typical audience picks up the book hoping to "learn" something rather than bask in the sunshine that is the authors' wisdom. DeMyer's Textbook, though not aimed at the medical student planning a quick pre-exam review of things, certainly steers clear of that temptation. Though packed with information (a discussion on Babinski's plantar reflex sign takes up 4 pages, for eg.), the editors have taken care to break down the text matter to suit the modern reader - I mean the one that, while skimming through a book on the couch, has 5 different browser tabs opened up on the laptop and a chat-window in the corner of the phone - yes the one with ADHD.

The monotony of the text matter is broken by self-test "fill-the-blanks" questions, often about the stuff you just read two or three lines ago, and the answers are given just to the left-hand margin in the same page. Chapters are organized in numbered subsections and bullet-points, which makes every line an important factoid. Images are easy to recall and the suggested exercises ("try to draw the figures from memory") are interesting (yes, sometimes childish, but I can't argue with the effectiveness!). Instead of "lecturing" on clinical exam, the book walks you through ways of testing stuff on yourself or a study-mate, which I am sure would be fun, if you were to actually read this 600+ page book in medical school! The illustrations are also accompanied by instructions on dissecting the brain, so I presume this was written for first-year med students to go along with their neuranatomy clerkship as well.

I was astonished to see medical history and a bit of philosophy as well sprinkled throughout this book, which for all purposes is quintessentially American - practice-driven and unconventional in all other respect. The chapter on special senses start with Aristotle (again bullet-points, remember !), walks you through Sherrington and then quickly dives into the present. About the Author
Andrew Linzey is an Anglican priest, a theologian, a writer, and is internationally known as an authority on Christianity and animals. He is a member of the Faculty of Theology at the University of Oxford, and holds the world's first academic post in Ethics, Theology and Animal Welfare--the Bede Jarret Senior Research Fellowship at Blackfriars Hall, University of Oxford. He is currently Honorary Professor at the University of Birmingham in England and Special Professor at Saint Xavier University in Chicago. He has written numerous articles and authored many books on animal theology and ethics.

A Gospel for All Creatures

Andrew Linzey is often called the chaplain of the animal rights movement, but that is hardly fair. The title, "chaplain," suggests someone who gives a bit of moral advice or adds some solemnity to a public occasion. Linzey does much more than that. For many years, he has been developing one of the most creative and constructive Christian theological projects. He is a systematic thinker in the sense that he examines and transforms every aspect of Christian doctrine from the perspective of compassion for animals. Yet he also is faithful and consistent in his appropriation of the Christian tradition. Indeed, he manages to recover aspects of Christianity of which even the most faithful are frequently unaware. I have often taught Linzey's earlier book, Animal Theology, in a college course, and that book is pitched at a slightly higher level than this one. But this book, Animal Gospel, is his most passionate and engaging work yet. If you are interested in what Christian theologians say about the animal rights movement, this is the one book to get. Linzey blends the theoretical and the practical in a comprehensive vision of what it means to be a Christian, not just what it means to be an animal rights activist. If you read this book, your views of Christianity will be changed as much as your views of animals. My only problem with Linzey is that sometimes he is too quick to use the language and assumptions of the animal rights movement, but the more I read of him, the more I realize that he uses the rhetoric of rights as a strategy to best implement the compassionate ideal of Christian faith. There is a growing movement among theologians to talk not just about the environment or nature but also about our specific obligations to animals, and we owe this movement to Linzey's pioneering work.

Once again, Dr. Andrew Linzey has delivered a wonderful and inspiring appeal for Christians and peoples of every faith to embrace the highest virtue - EMPATHY. He proclaims that a heightened sense of empathy brings us closer to God and permits us to live in harmony with one another and all of creation. A commitment to jump off our "human" pedestal and experience the wonders and beauty of God's creation in a humble and respectful manner is the true essence of Spirituality. "Animal Gospel" is a truly enlightening exposition.

An Intelligent, Reasoned Work of Compassion

Andrew Linzey provides a thought-provoking, erudite argument for why Christians ought to be concerned about animals. He does not resort to ill-founded arguments or emotionally manipulative pleas. Rather, he outlines in logical fashion the issues at hand: Animals are one of God's concerns; because God cares for animals so should those who claim to be God's people.

The first part of the book makes the case for animal rights--but Linzey carefully defines what he means by animal rights. Animals have rights because they were created by God and have intrinsic value as a result. Linzey does not put animals above humans or even discuss them in terms of "equal rights." Instead he asserts that while humans are given dominion over all creation, dominion is defined as service, protection and compassion. In other words, dominion is not unrestrained power and the right of superiority, it is the responsibility to love the world as God loves--via service. He does not minimize humanity, but demands that our humanocentric belief that God is only concerned about humans is simply wrong.

Linzey challenges the church to rise up to her responsibility. In several chapters, he outlines how irresponsibly the church has acted in regard to the environment and animals--both in theology and praxis. Yet, in other chapters he describes signs of hope-moments when Christians have stood up for ethical treatment of animals.

Linzey has spent years of his career developing his arguments. This book represents a collection of his best work (several chapters were previously published in other formats). The work is copiously footnoted and rigorously researched. For anyone who wishes to explore the issue animal rights from a Christian perspective, this is an excellent place to start.

The 24 selections of Ovid's Metamorphoses that Ted Hughes translated is so modern and orginal, after reading Tales from Ovid by Ovid, Ted Hughes, I wish Hughes had translated the entire epic.

Hughes is a brilliant poet and the way he wield words dazzled me for hours:

Then Narcissus wept into the pool.
His tears shattered the still shrine
And his image blurred.
He cried after it: "Don't leave me.
If I cannot touch you at least let me see you.
Let me nourish my starving, luckless love-
If only by looking".

This is a fantastic book. While it is especially valuable for beginners and first year sales reps, it has value for anybody in the profession. As an experienced sales professional myself, I will say that this won't teach a seasoned sales veteran any new information about HOW to sell, but it will help to realign your thoughts with WHY they buy. Huge difference there that we sometimes become jaded to after many years in the business. We get so focused on saying things we like to say, but disregard the things that the customer needs to hear. This book will also help the seasoned veteran to get back to the positive outlook and remember why they started selling to begin with. Sales is truly the best profession in the world, nothing will give you the satisfaction like a successful selling career. I wholeheartedly believe that ANYBODY in sales, regardless of skill level or experience would benefit from reading this book.

I ordered this book on 1 April 2016. Because of work (non-sales) and other obligations, I recently finished reading the book.

I bought the original book I wanted pure advice without revisions. The book is an amazing read. I look forward to my 2nd and 3rd reviews. Do not feel like you have to rush through this book. Although the advice is given through narrative, it is first and foremost a reference book. Place it on your bookshelf next to How to Get Rich: One of the World's Greatest Entrepreneurs Shares His Secrets.

THE Book on Sales!

Below are key excerpts from the book that I found particularly insightful:

1- "If, in your heart, you really feel the sales process is something you do t0 the prospect, then you are a manipulator. The dictionary defines manipulate: "To control the action of, by management; also, to manage artfully or fraudulently. Manipulation: Skillful or dexterous management, sometimes for purpose of fraud, state of being manipulated." I'll be the first to admit that manipulators make sales, but in my thirty-six years in the profession I have never known even one manipulator who was successful in the profession. If, in your heart, you feel the sales process is something you do for the prospect, then this book could represent a significant addition to your sales library. Your benefits will be considerable because you are truly interested in benefiting others."

2- "You've got to establish that trust and respect with your prospects if you expect to be a sales professional. This should be obvious. but for fear it's not, I'll spell it out. Again, you cannot be one kind of person and another kind of salesperson. You must be consistent in all areas of life if you are going to achieve maximum results in building your sales career. That's one of the major reasons we deal with the entire person rather than just the salesperson throughout this book. This is one of the "not-so-little" things that make the buying difference in the prospect's mind."

3- "People forget price but they'll never forget poor quality or a poor choice. They generally give the salesperson a generous portion of the blame. Some of that goes with the territory, but too much blame means you won't have the territory for long."

4- "High performers in the world of selling establish trust with customers by one-on-one, eye-to-eye communication skills. They maintain n trust by personally assuming responsibility for completing the sale, which means servicing the account on an ongoing basis and utilizing their company support people in the most effective manner. High performers demonstrated great integrity with their follow-through and belief that the sale is not complete until the product is installed and functioning satisfactorily."

5- "The critical step: in the world of selling is this step of honesty which is your total conviction, your complete belief that the product or service you sell is the best buy for the prospect."

6- "Sympathy means you feel like another person feels. Empathy means you understand how the other person feels, though you do not feel the same way...To be truly professional you must be able to comfortably move from the seller's side of the table to the buyer's side. If you know how your prospect thinks and feels, you're definitely going to sell more of what you're selling because you will communicate more effectively."

7- "One myth—that a salesperson should not get involved with customer concerns other than the purpose of the sales call—was exploded, as was the concept that price isn't important and that you should "promise them anything" to close a sale. Customers want and expect heir salespeople to be able to act as trustworthy resources who respond directly and provide them expertise, backed by effective recommendations. One significant characteristic of the high producer is his willingness to explain product drawbacks."

8- " H in the heart of your sales career is honesty, E is ego and empathy, A is your attitude toward you your prospects and profession, R is for physical, mental, and spiritual reserve, T is for tough—and the toughest thing is love"

9- "When the inner man speaks, the I not speak from the heart unless he truly believes in his product and/or service. This means that he must have paid the price by obtaining profound knowledge of his product or service. One must also believe this product/service is unquestionably what the customer/patient needs."

10- "Almost without exception, every product or service can be sold by painting word pictures, especially if the pictures are in the present tense. As I've previously stated, we think in pictures and we buy pictures if we are painted into the picture as satisfied customers."

11- "It's better to have the no today than tomorrow for the simple reason it clears your mind. You can now pursue new prospects and not count on that one for a future sale. Once you do, you fall into the trap of not prospecting for new prospects and the sale you miss today will cost you sales tomorrow."

12- "There is one specific point, however, when I throw in the towel and withdraw my efforts to close. That point is when the prospect makes it clear—after seeing the benefits—that he has no interest and cannot or will not buy. Until that point, however, I am going to make an honest effort to close the sale."

13- "I deal with and use questions in every segment of Secrets of Closing the Sale. There is no doubt in my mind that your career as a salesperson will move forward faster as a direct result of learning how to ask questions and how to use the proper voice inflection than from any other skills you might develop."

14- "To build a sales career, you need to acquire the knowledge made available through sales trainers, books, recordings, and seminars. With that knowledge you should weave in a poetic philosophy of life which says that "you can get everything in life you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want." You have a moral obligation to work so hard at building your sales career and becoming truly professional that as my friend John Nevin from Australia says, "If anyone ever sees you coming and says, 'Here comes a salesman,' you won't let him down.'"
