The Ringtone Dialectic: Economy and Cultural Form (MIT Press), by Sumanth Gopinath

A decade ago, the customizable ringtone was ubiquitous. Almost any crowd of cell phone owners could produce a carillon of tinkly, beeping, synthy, musicalized ringer signals. Ringtones quickly became a multi-billion-dollar global industry and almost as quickly faded away. In The Ringtone Dialectic, Sumanth Gopinath charts the rise and fall of the ringtone economy and assesses its effect on cultural production.

Gopinath describes the technical and economic structure of the ringtone industry, considering the transformation of ringtones from monophonic, single-line synthesizer files to polyphonic MIDI files to digital sound files and the concomitant change in the nature of capital and rent accumulation within the industry. He discusses sociocultural practices that seemed to wane as a result of these shifts, including ringtone labor, certain forms of musical notation and representation, and the creation of musical and artistic works quoting ringtones. Gopinath examines "declines," "reversals," and "revivals" of cultural forms associated with the ringtone and its changes, including the Crazy Frog fad, the use of ringtones in political movements (as in the Philippine "Gloriagate" scandal), the ringtone's narrative function in film and television (including its striking use in the films of the Chinese director Jia Zhangke), and the ringtone's relation to pop music (including possible race and class aspects of ringtone consumption). Finally, Gopinath considers the attempt to rebrand ringtones as "mobile music" and the emergence of cloud computing.

Review

There is no book like this. Politically, theoretically, and sonically engaged, The Ringtone Dialectic takes something of seemingly minor significance -- cell phone ringtones -- and uses it to explore the structure and dynamics of global capitalism. Gopinath raises the bar in the study of the political economy of sound.

(David Suisman, author of Selling Sounds: The Commercial Revolution in American Music)

Why should we care about ringtones? As The Ringtone Dialectic makes clear, we have good reason to care. In this perceptive and provocative study, Sumanth Gopinath uses the ringtone to offer fresh perspectives on the creation and consumption of music, the evolution of digital technologies, and the global trade of information. Full of fascinating case studies and insightful analysis, The Ringtone Dialectic probes the profound and lasting consequences of the short-lived multi-billion-dollar industry built on 30-second clips of music.

(Mark Katz, Chair, Department of Music, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and author of Groove Music: The Art and Culture of the Hip-Hop DJ)

Sumanth Gopinath's The Ringtone Dialectic is a theoretically provocative and empirically rich study that should be read in music studies and far beyond.

(Timothy D. Taylor, author of The Sounds of Capitalism: Advertising, Music, and the Conquest of Culture)

The Ringtone Dialectic ambitiously -- and successfully -- brings our understanding of the circuit of culture, articulated through a brilliant analysis of ringtones, into the twenty-first century. If you want to understand the global workings of a multi-billion-dollar digital culture on the move, then read this book.

(Michael Bull, University of Sussex)

With a certain dry humour mixed with the arch tones of mild scholarly disdain, reading Gopinath on 'the degraded pre-adolescent utopias' of the Crazy Frog tune can be a little like reading Glenn Gould blithely discussing the 'harmonic primitivism' of the Beatles. Nonetheless, this unique and often fascinating volume unearths a sufficient number of intriguing artistic responses to suggest that there may have been more to the ringtone as cultural form than Für Elise rendered in coarse FM synthesis and dididing ding bing bing.

(Art Review)

...the most interesting parts of the book were those where Gopinath discusses the cultural aspects related to ringtones. Ringtones, Gopinath maintains, are aestheticized signals. Their function is to indicate, by means of sound, that the owner of the mobile phone is receiving a phone call. A simple beep would suffice to accomplish this task. Nevertheless, many phone user prefer to use another sound to indicate this, one that is aesthetically more pleasing. A Bach excerpt, for example.

(Journal of Sonic Studies)

From the savannas of Africa to modern-day labs for biomechanical analysis and molecular genetics, Smithsonian Intimate Guide to Human Origins reveals how anthropologists are furiously redrawing the human family tree. Their discoveries have spawned a host of new questions: Should chimpanzees be included as a human species? Was it the physical difficulty of human childbirth that encouraged the development of social groups in early human species? Did humans and Neanderthals interbreed? Why did humans supplant Neanderthals in the end? In answering such questions, Smithsonian Intimate Guide to Human Origins sheds new light on one of the most important questions of all: What makes us human?

Almost top line
By Stephen A. Haines
As one of North America's leading science writers, Carl Zimmer brings excellent qualifications to this book. His earlier work, "Evolution: Triumph of an Idea" skilfully explained the history of life. His "Parasite Rex", despite the topic, is a delightful read. In this book, focused on how the human branch of life's historical tree grew and developed, he again weaves his careful research and fine writing into a highly understandable survey. With a collection of vivid illustrations to enhance the text, this work poses a difficult selection choice for those interested in what we know of our origins.

The title is evocative, but the book's brevity and the dynamics of the science of palaeoanthropology necessarily limit what can be presented. Zimmer doesn't spend overmuch time in dealing with the history of the science. Instead, he deals with the topics involved in how fossil finds and genetics research provide clues to how humanity developed over the millennia. With the paucity of available fossils and the indeterminate nature of historical genetics, absolute answers on human evolution are sparse. New finds in both fields challenge any thesis, provide endorsement or refutation in equal measure. Zimmer is fully up to handling these vagaries, carefully guiding us through the questions, the evidence and the resolution. He's quick to point out where questions, even new ones generated by recent research, remain to be addressed. One could almost believe him to be a field researcher, when he laments the need for new exploration and evidence brought up for study. He also keeps pace with the emergence of innovative techniques providing the analytical tools that point to answers.

The eight chapters comprising the body of the book explain how random the finding of fossils truly is. Sahelanthropus tchadensis was revealed in a wind-blown Sahara basin, while the earliest Homo erectus was taken from a jungle river ravine. Stone tools may erode from a stream channel or appear in sediments that once fringed an ancient lake. Dating, that fundamental aspect that places the various finds in respect to one another, is also an indeterminate. Volcanoes, spewing ash-bearing crystals, is the major form of calendar to the field worker. The calendar must be set for place as well as time, since our ancestors had the capacity to emigrate. Zimmer explains how their wandering from continent to continent has both clarified and confused the picture we have of the tree. Was every branch from a single trunk, or did many trunks form, spouting new species in various locations?

Our wanderings result from one of the great mysteries of human evolution. Unlike any other mammal, we are wholly bipedal. Why should that capacity have evolved, and did it change our lifestyle, or was our behaviour a result of standing upright? Zimmer poses these questions and the scholars who have offered answers. Hominid fossils, always fragile, rarely provide clear explanations. Leg length compared to arm's reach is but a guideline. Jaws, rib cages and other elements must be carefully detailed, the author notes. Even when things seem clarified, a new factor may intrude to force revision of ideas.

The two major factors that brought about human uniqueness are, of course, tool making and language. While other animals, even birds, can apply tools and certainly have methods of communication, it is left to our lineage to develop these elements in highly complex ways. We alone, Zimmer reminds us, developed talents for planning how a tool should look to perform its task properly. Language, no matter how it started or developed across the world, granted us the ability to pass ideas down the generations. Skills learned were exchanged, and the growth of a brain stimulated by hunting and group living was further stimulated. Modern genetics, Zimmer explains, has revealed genes, particularly FOXP2, which promote language learning. Forms of FOXP2 exist in other species, although its role for them remains unclear. Language, however, is also instrumental in our spread over the planet. Ironically, it may have been the "competitive edge" our species had that allowed it to eliminate our closest cousins, the Neanderthal.

Like all books on human origins, this one suffers from "calendaritis" - new research has nudged some of Zimmer's effort to one side. That in no way reduces the value of this book. What is more questionable is the small physical size and large margins. That reduces the font and deprives the author of room to expand on topics needing the space. While the graphics are excellent for the size of the book, they may have been given more prominence than necessary. The publisher, as so often happens with books of this type, disrupts the flow of the text with "sidebar boxes". These are always useful, and usually necessary, but improper placement can be disruptive. Entire pages given over to skull images are of doubtful value, although the comparative arrangements greatly enhance the narrative. It's a hard choice, giving this book four stars, but five won't truly reflect its worth. If you must make a choice in selecting the prime survey on human origins, "The Complete World of Human Evolution" by Chris Stringer and Peter Andrews remains your best bet. Until a new set of fossils is found! [stephen a. haines - Ottawa, Canada]

Meh. For Smithsonian, a disappointment.
By JT
Meh. For Smithsonian, this was a real disappointment. The large print and widely spaced lines do not hide the fact that there really isn't much content. Not only that, this is a SMALL book, and not particularly well illustrated. This is a subject that demands lavish graphics, which are lacking.

Top notch reporting perfectly executed
By Michael Heath
There are several reasons why this book belongs in every home and high school science classroom:

1) Carl Zimmer is an excellent journalist. He's a talented writer whose interesting to read, his work focuses nearly exclusively on science along with publishing general works on evolution so he's understands the science behind our human origins, and his talent as a writer allows him to write at a level a 10th grader can understand rather than often cryptic jargon of someone immersed in the research. He also humanizes his reporting with several human-interest stories of the scientists behind some of our biggest stories as well as portraying the thrill of "the find of a lifetime" that several fortunate scientists and their teams experience.

2) The book is beautifully illustrated and photographed. I especially enjoyed the comparative skull photos and illustrations.

3) This book focuses on a particular game plan, human origins, with very little tangential forays. It spends very little time on the general theory of evolution itself, religious objections, or technical controversies those immersed in the industry debate. Instead Zimmer and his editor provide a journalistic account of the state of our knowledge regarding human evolution, specifically: fossil finds, hypotheses and theories on immigration, technology development and its effect on mutations, and even a chapter on human potential for change in the future.

This would be an excellent supplemental book for a high school biology class or even 100-level college classes due to its relatively short length at a heavily illustrated 165 pages. It been 20 years since I read a book focused exclusively on human origins so I was well rewarded with what we've learned since then along with some great pictures of fossil finds. I was also able to purchase a like-new used book on Amazon for about $7 so this is a no-brainer; order this book!!!

Shackleton's Way: Leadership Lessons from the Great Antarctic Explorer, by Margot Morrell, Stephanie Capparell

Sir Ernest Shackleton has been called "the greatest leader that ever came on God's earth, bar none" for saving the lives of the twenty-seven men stranded with him in the Antarctic for almost two years. Today the public can't get enough of this once-forgotten explorer, and his actions have made him a model for great leadership and masterful crisis management. Now, through anecdotes, the diaries of the men in his crew, and Shackleton's own writing, Shackleton's leadership style and time-honored principles are translated for the modern business world. Written by two veteran business observers and illustrated with ship photographer Frank Hurley's masterpieces and other rarely seen photos, this practical book helps today's leaders follow Shackleton's triumphant example.

The explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton has recently become the legendary character at the center of a renewed fascination with the early days of Antarctic exploration. Though not the most renowned explorer of his day, nor even the most successful in terms of stated goals, Shackleton's story of adventurous ambition, incredible endurance, and heroic survival against all odds is indeed the stuff of legend. And now, thanks to the detailed research and helpful insights of Morrell and Capparell, his story is also the meaty material of lessons on how to lead with authority, integrity, humor, and compassion.

A British explorer once summarized the feats of the great Antarctic explorer like this: "For a joint scientific and geographical piece of organization, give me Scott; for a winter journey, give me Wilson, for a dash to the Pole and nothing else, Amundsen; and if I am in the devil of a hole and want to get out of it, give me Shackleton every time." His words set the tone for Shackleton's Way, at once both a travel narrative and a handbook of the skills required for effective leadership of diverse groups, especially in times of change and crisis. Shackleton's attempts to reach the South Pole and his two-year fight for the survival of his crew, when their ship is stranded in ice and then sunk, makes for exciting reading. Using this story as the centerpiece of their book, the authors have woven in their interpretation of his success using interviews with exceptional modern leaders such as Mike Dale, Jaguar's former chief of North American operations, and Apollo 13 Commander James Lovell, and by offering useful advice points at the end of each chapter. For example, in the chapter entitled "The Path to Leadership," Shackleton is shown to have been a well-read man, eager to learn and able to mix with varied company. The authors support this by noting that broadening one's horizons and learning to see things from different perspectives will allow for greater flexibility in problem solving. U.S. Secretary of the Navy Richard Danzig agrees that a level of well roundedness is vital in leaders, acknowledging that "one of my prime aims in distributing books is to get people to think outside themselves and to think broadly."

Morrell and Capparell's excellent use of archival material (especially crew diaries) and their intelligent interpretation of what Shackleton's story implies about good leaders makes this book both pleasurable and educational. Throughout the story of the explorer's exploits, the authors have inserted summarizing subtitles that succinctly capture Shackleton's leadership style. Occasionally, this seems a little strained; while the explorer's progressive attitudes and actions deserve praise as leadership lessons par excellence, even some of his misjudgments are referred to with something approaching reverence. For the most part, however, the authors employ a subtle and effective hand in translating the actions of a man at the helm of a dangerous adventure into advice beneficial to leaders in all areas of life. --S. From Publishers Weekly
The heroism of British explorer Ernest ShackletonDbest known for his failed 1914 Antarctic expedition in which he saved his 27-member crew from perishing under harrowing conditions for more than two yearsDhas been chronicled in numerous narrative accounts and, most recently, became the inspiration for another book of business nostrums, Leading at the Edge (Forecasts, Apr. 3). Although they tread in that book's footsteps, Morrell (a financial expert who has studied Shackleton's life and leadership style for 15 years) and Capparell (a Wall St. Journal business editor) have produced a first-rate business primer. With the help of diaries and other first-hand accounts, they vividly describe Shackleton's expeditions and his powerful leadership style, relating them to today's business world in a streamlined presentation. The authors also include the insights of a handful of modern-day leaders, including James Cramer, who believes that his own following of Shackleton's example in hiring talented, optimistic people made the difference for him at the TheStreet.com. Morrell and Capparell's book is strongest in its emphasis on leading a team against desperate odds over an extended period of time ("Give your staff an occasional reality check to keep them on course. After a time, people will start to treat a crisis situation as business as usual and lose their focus"). (Jan.) Forecast: With a first serial in the Wall Street Journal and a five-city author tour, this solid book may come from behind to overtake its competition, Leading at the Edge.

From Library Journal
Overwhelmed by the outbreak of World War I, the incredible story of Sir Ernest Shackleton has now resurfaced in a timely wave of Shackleton mania that reminds us of the importance of learning about heroes. In 1914, after the wreck of their vessel, the Endurance, left his crew of 27 men stranded on an ice floe in the Antarctic 1200 miles from civilization, Shackleton led them through a two-year fight for survival. Authors Morrell (financial representative, Fidelity Investments) and Capparell (an editor and writer for the Wall Street Journal) use anecdotes, diary excerpts from the seamen, and Shackleton's own memoirs to present a refreshing and timely business manual on supreme leadership disguised as an adventure story. Their story is linked to modern-day business challenges, emphasizing lessons of leadership that include working cohesively with all sorts of diverse personalities and talent, maintaining morale, creating order out of chaos, hiring good workers, managing crises with limited resources, and, most importantly, leading by example. Thankfully, the authors focus on the revealing words of those directly involved in this most amazing experience. Highly recommended for all libraries, along with works on the actual story, including Alfred Lansing's Endurance (Carroll & Graf, 2001), Caroline Alexander's The Endurance (LJ 10/15/98), and Shackleton's memoirs, South (1970). Shackleton's Servant Leadership
By YKP
Sir Ernest Shackleton's well-documented story of his ill-fated attempt to cross the Antarctic Continent and his heroic efforts to save his crew of 27 after the crushing and sinking of his ship Endurance is indeed the material for a major network mini-series. However, Shackleton's Way: Leadership Lessons from the Great Antartic Explorer, is an unglamorous and non-preachy lesson in leadership with authority, integrity, humor, and compassion.
I do have a slight criticism, an important lesson in leadership was skipped - balance. Shackleton's ability to coach and encourage, listen and build a sense of community, and focus on meeting the needs of others while developing and bringing out the best in them did not extend to his family. The authors Morrell and Capparell do mention his neglected family. However it was glazed over and they failed to offer insight on how we the reader might learn from this shortcoming. Clearly he was a self-directed and other-focused man, but he lacked balance. He devoted his life to his work and crew while his family settled for scraps of time and attention. It is important that we learn from success and failure, not just the stuff that makes for great TV and/or big screen movies.
While Shackleton's Way was admittedly a bit dry at times, I thoroughly enjoyed the mixture of history and practical applications of servant leadership in today's business world. The book provides a glimmer of hope in light of the recent corporate ethics scandals. I am impressed by Shackleton's pioneer sprit in exploration and leadership. He certainly did not have Covey, Greenleaf, Hunter or Autry to reference. How lucky we are to have Sir Ernest.
Whether you are searching for a historical biography, travel journal, adventure story or a desktop guide to servant leadership you just might find something more than you bargained for in Shackleton's Way.

Missoula: Rape and the Justice System in a College Town, by Jon Krakauer

From bestselling author Jon Krakauer, a stark, powerful, meticulously reported narrative about a series of sexual assaults at the University of Montana — stories that illuminate the human drama behind the national plague of campus rape

Missoula, Montana, is a typical college town, with a highly regarded state university, bucolic surroundings, a lively social scene, and an excellent football team — the Grizzlies — with a rabid fan base.

The Department of Justice investigated 350 sexual assaults reported to the Missoula police between January 2008 and May 2012. Few of these assaults were properly handled by either the university or local authorities. In this, Missoula is also typical.

A DOJ report released in December of 2014 estimates 110,000 women between the ages of eighteen and twenty-four are raped each year. Krakauer’s devastating narrative of what happened in Missoula makes clear why rape is so prevalent on American campuses, and why rape victims are so reluctant to report assault.

Acquaintance rape is a crime like no other. Unlike burglary or embezzlement or any other felony, the victim often comes under more suspicion than the alleged perpetrator. This is especially true if the victim is sexually active; if she had been drinking prior to the assault — and if the man she accuses plays on a popular sports team. The vanishingly small but highly publicized incidents of false accusations are often used to dismiss her claims in the press. If the case goes to trial, the woman’s entire personal life becomes fair game for defense attorneys.

This brutal reality goes a long way towards explaining why acquaintance rape is the most underreported crime in America. In addition to physical trauma, its victims often suffer devastating psychological damage that leads to feelings of shame, emotional paralysis and stigmatization. PTSD rates for rape victims are estimated to be 50%, higher than soldiers returning from war.

In Missoula, Krakauer chronicles the searing experiences of several women in Missoula — the nights when they were raped; their fear and self-doubt in the aftermath; the way they were treated by the police, prosecutors, defense attorneys; the public vilification and private anguish; their bravery in pushing forward and what it cost them.

Some of them went to the police. Some declined to go to the police, or to press charges, but sought redress from the university, which has its own, non-criminal judicial process when a student is accused of rape. In two cases the police agreed to press charges and the district attorney agreed to prosecute. One case led to a conviction; one to an acquittal. Those women courageous enough to press charges or to speak publicly about their experiences were attacked in the media, on Grizzly football fan sites, and/or to their faces. The university expelled three of the accused rapists, but one was reinstated by state officials in a secret proceeding. One district attorney testified for an alleged rapist at his university hearing. She later left the prosecutor’s office and successfully defended the Grizzlies’ star quarterback in his rape trial. The horror of being raped, in each woman’s case, was magnified by the mechanics of the justice system and the reaction of the community.

Krakauer’s dispassionate, carefully documented account of what these women endured cuts through the abstract ideological debate about campus rape. College-age women are not raped because they are promiscuous, or drunk, or send mixed signals, or feel guilty about casual sex, or seek attention. They are the victims of a terrible crime and deserving of compassion from society and fairness from a justice system that is clearly broken.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of April 2015: Toward the end of this powerful, absorbing book, best-selling author Jon Krakauer quotes a jury member as she sums up popular assumptions about sexual assault: “(1) A stranger jumps out from the bushes; (2) There is no (assault) unless the woman puts up a fight, to the death if necessary.” The truth is much different—assaults by acquaintances are by far the most common form of the crime. In Missoula, Krakauer examines one community’s struggle with such accusations, shining a bright light on a problem that frequently goes underreported and is all-too-easy to sweep under the rug. Not only must victims contend with the after-effects of the crime, they must often face doubting police, antagonistic lawyers, and the whims of popular opinion. Some of the reported assaults in Krakauer’s book involved members of the University of Montana’s beloved Grizzly football team. Using facts and documentation balanced by interviews and courtroom drama, he builds a gem of narrative nonfiction that will educate and incite. As the story builds, culminating in two different trials with two different outcomes, readers will find themselves consumed by the factual and emotional complexities of the subject. No page turner this year will be more incendiary than Missoula. – Chris Schluep

Brave Women who fought the system
By Libaryteacher
Just finished Missoula and found it to be one of the best nonfiction books I have ever read. I live in Montana and 30 years ago I went to college in Montana-not at The university of Montana in Missoula. My senior year my apartment was broken into and I was raped by a guy I had been out at a bar with that evening. Later that year I went to a bar with friends who left me. I needed a ride home and a guy I kinda knew offered me a ride in his pickup. I had not been drinking. He drove past my apartment and continued to drive fast to his place out of town and only took me home after he raped me- I thought I was going to die that night. Keep in mind that I had only gone to bars a handful of times in 4 years of college when these rapes happened to me. Either I was extremely unlucky or rapes are very common. Ask any sampling of 5 women and you will find that at least 3 have been sexually traumatized at least once during their lifetime.

Campus rapes and non campus rapes are almost epidemic in our society. Thank you Mr. Krakauer for researching and writing Missoula. It was a hard book for me to read, but worth every tear I shed. After each chapter I had to go outside and walk off the fear and memories. The young women whose stories you told so eloquently are much braver and stronger than I ever was when it happened to me. Thank You.

A powerful examination of sexual assault in America
By Amanda Sledz
In "Missoula" Krakauer presents, sometimes in agonizing detail, the lasting injuries inflicted upon several women in Montana who were sexually assaulted, often times by members of the Grizzlies football team. From the assaults themselves, to the invasive post-rape examination, to equally invasive and character defaming trials, to the blowback from a community inclined to support football over all, it's a stunning presentation of our flawed court system, and the manner in which rape victims are treated.

Supported by research, Department of Justice investigations, trial observation, and victim testimony, "Missoula" seeks to underscore that victim status is not tidily resolved at the conclusion of a trial, and justice is hard-won, particularly when the accused struggles to understand their guilt. The level of denial presented by families, in particular -- even when confronted with outright admission of guilt -- shows that the court system begs for crime to not be crime, if the person can make something of themselves eventually. While this book is set in the same town as the title, it is also Any College Town, America -- and is a book that everyone should read.

"Missoula" has heroes, like police detective Guy Baker who encouraged Allison Huguet to report Beau Donaldson, and persuaded Hillary McLaughlin to testify about an attempted rape at Donaldson's trial. It also champions Charles Couture, former University of Montana Dean of Students, who conducted investigations into three of the rape cases presented in this book, and chose not to bow to community pressures to favor football players. The book also has its villains, like Kirsten Pabst, a prosecutor who actually showed up at a college hearing in defense of the accused.

Krakauer is not attempting to be unbiased; this book is in defense of rape victims and against the culture that enables rapists to walk free. Still, the book would have been stronger with a one-on-one interview with controversial prosecutor-turned-defense attorney-turned-prosecutor Kirsten Pabst, who appeared to deliberately avoid sexual assault cases during her tenure -- a fact further revealed through Department of Justice investigations. Presented as calculating, narcissistic, and intentionally negligent, hearing her voice respond to these allegations would have added another layer, and offered more information as to the mindset of an individual who appears to prioritize trial victory over justice.

Similarly, the demonization of Gwen Florio, a Missoula journalist, by the community at large comes up repeatedly, but since her articles aren't cited and there isn't extensive examination of her role, it's hard to understand why she was such a polarizing figure, and what kind of impact this might have had on her life. It would have been helpful to better understand the relationship she had with various rape victims and the community itself, as well as what role she thought she played in the tale as it unfolded.

Also missing is insight as to the mindset of the average Missoula citizen, to understand better what informs a culture of enabling. Krakauer describes the passion for football and the tendency of the average citizen to be more educated than average, but this doesn't offer the same insight that candid interviews would provide, or thoughtful observations of daily interactions between men and women, college students and towns people. I found myself wanting Krakauer to wander into a neighborhood bar for a conversation with the men and women seated at tables, instead of reading the comments people tend to post on the internet when they have no fear of the words becoming attached to their faces.

Overall, the book is fast-paced, completely engrossing, and an important testimony about sexual assault in America. It's a dark story that emphasizes that ways rape permanently alters the lives of victims, and how only communities working collectively can change things.

Important Book - Glad I Read It
By Curtis Johnson
This book made me think more about rape in the past three days than I have in my previous 46 years. I am very glad he wrote it.

The women in this book are heroes to me. By facing their detractors and demons they inspired this book, which will be widely read. They brought focus, and hopefully change, to a prevalent, largely invisible, and incredibly damaging social problem. Many victims will be inspired by them to speak out, and as a result WHAT HAPPENED TO THEM WILL NOT HAPPEN TO MANY OTHERS BECAUSE OF THEIR BRAVERY!

I've already talked to my 12 and 14 year old boys about the situations and consequences from this book. We spend a lot of time talking to women about avoiding these bad situations, but not nearly enough to young men. The young men in the book irrevocably damaged the lives of these women, but also their own lives, their families and their communities.

It is also clear from this book how alcohol played a role in the majority of the rapes in this story.

Our national propensity for protecting the bad behavior of athletes, particularly football players, is a sickness. I am a Packers fan -- but this book reminded me of how entitled and above the rest of society some athletes feel they are. The reaction and attack on the victims from many in Missoula should be cause for deep national reflection.

As Krakauer alludes to -- this book probably could have been written in any college town. I think the title is unfortunate and unfair to Missoula which is a great community and full of many wonderful human beings.

Coming on the heels of the Rolling Stone article which proved to be a false accusation of rape shows how lives can just as easily be ruined by a women willing to make a false rape accusation. The book has a brief nod to this as well by sharing a case of an innocent man convicted of rape and the loss of his likely future as a result. This is another reason I warned my boys about putting avoiding situations like these in the first place.

This book is as good as "Where Men win Glory" was bad! I live in Bozeman, MT. I have read all but one of Krakauer's books and have enjoyed all but one (Where Men Win Glory).

Amazing Third Book!
By Amazon Customer
Wow! I ***LOVED*** this book! I read it one day, it was that good. The characters were great. More than once I giggled out loud, which is good for me. And yes, I cried too. This book felt darker than the previous few. If you are looking for a book with a strong, clever heroine, (who can be friends with good-looking boys without getting *too* mushy), who solves her problems without whining about them, and pulls you in to a fast-paced adventure filled with surprises, this is the *best* option. Shannon Messenger just keeps getting better. Keeper of the Lost Cities was already my favorite when I read it the first time, then Exile came out, and Everblaze!!!...it topped everything. I would recommend this to anyone and everyone.

--------------------------------------**Spoilers beyond this line**------------------------------

Kenric's death was incredibly sad. But it shows a growing point in in the series. It takes guts to kill off a character the right way. Especially one that you've allowed the characters to bond with. Compare it to the first few Percy Jackson books. Percy's mother, Tyson, Thalia, and to some extent, Annabeth all were pronounced dead, and then, surprise! they're alive. Also, the betrayal of Keefe's mom. This is where I find a *gasp* fault. It was a great plot twist, and a surprising betrayal, but it seems it was only a surprise because we only 'met' Keefe's mother in this book. Other than that, I'm blind to any faults. All in all, amazing!

Again, best book series ever!

For the past two books I've said this is my favorite series ever. The third book only helped prove my point. I love ALL the characters, though Keefe and Sandor are my favorites. There are so many twists in this series, evil and good, so if you haven't read this book, do it. I dare you!

Ohr mer gurd BEST BOOK EVER
By prchick
Oh my gosh, this was the best book in the series so far. If there isn't another book, I'm not sure I'll be able to survive. The Keeper of the Lost Cities is the most amazing series I have ever read. I don't usually pick favorites, but these are by far the best books IN THE ENTIRE WORLD.
