This is to share my review on the book ‘Demand Planning with SAP APO - Execution’ - Authored by Avijit Dutta & Shreekant Shiralkar.

Being an APO professional working in SAP APO environment for more than twelve years and with more than 23 years of industry experience, It’s indeed a pleasure to provide an objective and rational review on this book that revolves around a subject that I had the opportunity to work extensively and experience in the subject more insight.

My propensity to read the book ‘Demand Planning with SAP APO - Execution’ arose from reading the authors’ prequel book ‘Demand Planning with SAP APO – Concepts and Design’. Having discovered the quality in their first book, my expectation was already benchmarked for their second book; as I was curious to know how authors would conclude the subject. Having read both the books, I can say with authority that authors have done a fabulous job in making the second book an absolute complement to their first book.

The book ‘Demand Planning with SAP APO - Execution’ begins with descriptive Demand planning business scenarios, and goes on to build on the concepts and design explained in their prequel book and beautifully explains and exemplify demand planning through step-by-step, hands-on method. In this book as well, authors continue the ‘business touch’, much to my interest. The book wonderfully demonstrates, in a pattern similar to their first book, the practical application of data loading and statistical forecasting in the context of SCM and business. Furthermore, it’s brilliant to find that authors’ have included advanced topics like product life cycle planning, promotion planning, consensus planning and integration of demand planning with release of demand to supply planning. The chapter on implementation and template based global rollout methodology also exhibits rare insights which are difficult to come by in any other books.

The book would certainly benefit the beginners who aspire to work in SAP Demand Planning as well as it would enrich the knowledge of existing SCM professionals in demand planning space.

As they crash into unsuspecting bystanders, Miss Prudence accrues an amazing hodgepodge of buckets, silk drawers, a doll, some cotton, a priest's stole and even a dog on her lap. The unstoppable pig runs into the immigration office, the museum, the church and finally ends up in the Mayor's office. As the pig stands atop the Mayor's chair, Miss Prudence suggests that the pig runs the city but the spotted pig runs on.

Linda Stanek, who situates this story in the days of parasols and horse-drawn carriages, gives readers a rollicking romp through the streets of an industrial-age city. Lauren Castillo's retro illustrations are perfectly matched to the time period and add significantly to the humor in the story.

Kindergarten-Grade 2—According to the jacket flap, this story is set in "a turn-of-the-century city," but the location and, in fact, which century are not explicitly stated. A wandering pig is startled by a passing carriage and somehow ends up with Miss Prudence on his back. The two proceed to tear through the streets, careening into numerous people and things and taking a bit of something away with them with each encounter. In the style of a cumulative tale, the items are all listed with each new addition followed by the refrain, "but the pig ran on." Various references, such as the Barnum American Museum, which was on Broadway from 1841 until it burned in 1865, identify the locale as New York City. The roaming pigs, which were largely blamed for the cholera epidemic of 1849, were driven from the city at that time. Both of these facts would seem to indicate an early-19th-century setting. Details of the text and illustration are occasionally at odds with the time period, such as the bright red uniform worn by the police officer—NYPD uniforms have changed since their adoption in 1844, but they have always been blue. There are also pieces that are at odds with what would seem intended as a lighthearted romp. The pig runs past "a long line of immigrants with tired faces" and snatches an orphan when running past the Home of the Friendless. The illustrations frequently do not support the text, with the items supposedly grabbed by the pig or Miss Prudence missing from some of the pictures. An enjoyable children's picturebook

Set at the turn of the nineteenth century into the twentieth century, The Pig and Miss Prudence is an enjoyable children's picturebook about a woman whose quarrel with a pig that nibbles on her flowers escalates into a grand escapade! Miss Prudence finds herself unexpectedly riding the pig through the busy city, crashing into flower carts and shipyard workers while chased by a rowdy crowd, through a hat shop, the museum, the church, and finally the mayor's office. The exuberant art style of Lauren Castillo adds high-energy to the hijinks, while the cheerful prose of author Linda Stanek immerses the reader in a world gone by. "Miss Prudence rose to her feet, adjusted the cameo at her throat, and placed her hands on her hips. 'I declare!' she said. 'If I didn't know better, I'd say that pigs run the city!'"

The Pig Ran On!!

This is a super fun story. Kids will love the crazy antics as Miss Prudence holds on and the pig runs through the streets of New York, leaving behind merry mayhem. And besides the fun, you get a taste of New York City at the turn-of-the-century. Lauren Castillo's illustrations are perfectly suited to author Linda Stanek's delightful story.

Wonderful Book to Read over and over!

This book is wonderful! - the reference to words, places and objects that are not in other kids books are great for expanding your childs vocabulary. I have a 5 and 8 year old and they ask me to read this over and over again. The kids run around the house saying "Oh Land O' Goshen" - they think it is hysterical. I love the story too - it is very cute. I can't wait for Linda Stanek to write another book - I will be first in line to buy it!

For students of physics fairly advanced mathematics, beyond that included in the usual curriculum in physics, is presented.

The present volume concerns a detailed study of the mathematical and physical aspects of the quantum theory of light.

About the Author

The author, Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Eberhard Zeidler, is retired director of the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences in Leipzig (Germany). In 1996 he was one of the founding directors of this institute. He is a member of the National Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina. In 2006 he was awarded the "Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftspreis" of the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach-Stiftung.

A Bridge Over Troubled Water

Professor Eberhard Zeidler has set upon himself the monumental task of uniting mathematics and physics, thereby building a bridge between two "enemy" ommunities. This is as difficult an undertaking as Shakespeare's attempt to unite two lovers, and thereby create a bridge between their feuding families. The reason is that Zeidler's task, like Shakespeare's, is beset with certain inherent difficulties and contradictions.

Mathematics, and mathematical education, start with a contradiction. By its very technical nature, mathematics is divided into various compartments and sub-compartments. Yet, to my knowledge, no other field is more united and inseparable than mathematics. Even physics can be divided into somewhat independent fields, but mathematics cannot. This makes math unique among all branches of human knowledge.

Soft fields like literature and history are very loosely bound. You can start with any author, like Shakespeare, Sartre, or Steinbeck, or any historical period, like British, Indian, or America history, and from there you can continue in any direction you want like a free bird. You can't do that in maths. You have to begin at a very specific point, 1,2,3,... and follow a very tightly bound order - just try to teach calculus to a guy who doesn't know trigonometry. In other words, soft fields like literature are like beautiful cities - you can visit their attractions in any order you want. But mathematics is like a maze or labyrinth - you have only one entry point, and once inside and in panic, you are forced to chase every nook and corner to reach for the exit before you go mad. This is the agony and the ecstasy of mathematics.

Now enters physics on this "murky and stormy" stage. Again there are inherent differences in the approach of mathematicians and physicists to their respective fields. The most important thing in mathematics is a proof. In fact, I could not justify a lot of "weird" ideas in mathematics till I read their proofs. Often it is the necessity of proving things that introduces a lot of "weird" and counter-intuitive notions in math (at least for me).

Recently proofs in mathematics have become longer and longer. Many of Harish-Chandra's proofs in semi simple Lie groups and algebras are more that 100 pages long. Wiles proof of Fermat theorem is more than 200 pages long. And the Classification Theorem of finite groups requires more than 5000 pages of proof. As a physicists I have not even tried to read those proofs - I am incapable of that. But in my opinion a logical question arises:

Have these proofs to be so long, and if so, why? Do they reflect the strength or the weakness of the human mind?

I personally believe this is a fundamental question, and its very answer - whatever it may be - will clarify further the nature of mathematics, and even more , it would "throw some light" on the relationship between math and physics.

Now to physics.

Physics is all about Nature. And mathematics is just a language used to explain Nature. The relation between mathematics and physics is that of poetry and the language used to express that poetry. There is no inherent relation. This means that math and physics are not tightly bound, just as poetry is not bound to any specific language. Shakespeare could have used any language to express the same beautiful thoughts. And if it ever turns out that extraterrestrials have a better language to explain Nature I for one would rush to master it and throw our terrestrial mathematics into the dust-bin. This hints at a mismatch between math and physics.

One of the differences between physics and mathematics is that physics is more intuitive, and long mathematical proofs won't help if the intuition is not there. In fact, physics is a reality-check on math - it controls maths runaway flights into pure logic. I guess this is what Einstein and Feynman always said. And it is exactly here that a lot of bridges between math and physics have collapsed. Probably the mismatch lies in the brains of mathematicians and physicists. So, paradoxically again, in order to build true bridges between math and physics, some psychological study of the minds of mathematicians and physicists is needed. This gives some indication of the difficulty of building these bridges. It is not a bilateral but a multilateral task - a sort of multidisciplinary study. Seeing that Prof. Zeidler needs 6000 pages to deal with this bilateral task alone, it is no wonder that people dare not plunge into the murky waters of multilateralism - bilateralism is dark enough a territory to mess with.

The reason I am excited about "Zeidler Program" is that almost every time I read something from the 2 volumes of his series, I end up seeing some connection between physics and math which I did not see before, and this
sets me "thinking" ( at least in my limited ways). This cannot be said of many other books where all you can do is stare at the "most general formalism expressed in extremely terse notation". All you can carry away from such "masterpieces" is pseudo-knowledge consisting of some memorized terms and this is the most dangerous form of knowledge.

Yet the reason I am not passing a technical judgement on the first 2 volumes of his program is that I want to wait till volume 3 (Gauge theory) and volume 4 (Quantum Mathematics) appear on the stage. They will be the making or breaking points of "Zeidler Program". Only they will demonstrate what kind of bridges he has built between poor, old, and senile Electromagnetism and his new, flashy, and rich cousin called Principal Fiber Bundle, and between a man called Witten and a man called Witten again, that is, between Witten the physicist and Witten the mathematician. It is over such troubled waters that many a bridges have been washed away in the past. So I wish Prof. Zeidler all luck.

Grand plan, poorly executed.

My background in math and physics is not good enough to do a good review of this book. It looks at QED from a big picture point of view which I like. He probably does a good job of it, I'm not in a position to say. I hope someone will come along soon who can do a better job of reviewing the good parts of the book.

My concern is that at the page level, it has a lot of problems. There are a large number of typos, sometimes in strategic places. I suppose that can't be helped. However, there is at least one definition that is simply incorrect. Fortunately, that becomes obvious right away. Although Schwartz spaces and tempered distributions are used in several places, they are not defined at all. Instead it refers you to the definition in volume I which I don't have. On the other hand, the Heaviside function is defined five times. Some of the definitions of mathematical objects are ambiguous, obviously not written by a mathematician for a mathematician. I presume that Professor Zeidler's native language is German, and while his English is quite good, it is not quite good enough for this book. He practially says as much himself. An intersting, but unimportant side-note: in one place I found the word 'und', where 'and' was meant. The notation is inconsistent from chapter to chapter, sometimes changing within a page and in at least one case changing in mid-sentence. It seems that whereever there is a similarity of ideas in two places, there lacks a corresponding similarity of presentation.

Some things I like about the book. Not every proof is given in the book. Instead, a citation is given to where the proof can be found in another book. This allows the author to cover more ground and the reader to choose whether or not to find the proof. I haven't been looking up these proofs myself. I hope that the diligent reader doesn't need an entire library to complete the proofs. A large range of mathematics is presented. Even if you don't learn any physics, you will learn a lot of math by reading this book. What is more, you will have physical motivation for the mathematics. I think this helps to understand the meaning behind the abstraction.

One of the pleasures of owning a floral school is developing our floral school library.

It gives me a good excuse to buy books dealing with a wide range of subjects, to read and enjoy them, and to let others know about goodies that relate to our common interests.
It takes a lot to impress me though. There are books, and there are books!

I had the pleasure of reading "How to Grow Fresh Air: 50 House Plants that Purify Your Home or Office" by BC Wolverton.
Wolverton explored the healthy aspects of plants in terms of how they help to purify air and contribute to a more livable environment. I love that book.

Well, he's at it again!

This one is called " Plants: Why You Can't Live Without Them."

Along with co-author Kozaburo Takenaka, Wolverton provides a wonderful summary of just how critical plants are for human health and well being. Chapters like "Is the Air Indoors Making You Sick," Plants: Nature's Air Purifiers," "Medicinal Plants, " and more make their points in a succinct and appealing manner. (Be warned: The chapter on indoor air pollution made me not want to do any renovations in my home without careful and considerable examination of home construction materials). The benefits of plants in terms of reducing indoor air pollutants is discussed and documented as are many areas in which plants contribute to human well being.

When I was an undergraduate, one of my favorite courses was one called, "Plants And Man." It dealt with the benefits of plants and the social aspects of horticulture.
This book reads like a far more interesting and useful update of the subject for the 21st Century.

Wolverton and Tekenaka, in part wanted this book to provide a written legacy to their descendents of their contribution in making our environment a better place.

It is my hope that this book gets widespread attention, and that their legacy encouraging the use of plants to improve our environment, go far beyond the written page.

Buy this one. Encourage your local library to buy it, and encourage others to read it. It provides an excellent documentation of why plants and floral materials are so critical for human well being. It's timely and important.

An excellent example of how to sell

Securing major sales requires forming connections with every prospect. I’ve read lots of books about sales habits and techniques, but had never found one which dealt with these broader challenges around sales without tilting either to mindless optimism or anti-capitalist despair. Of all the activities in business, sales is the one which forces us to confront who we are and what we are willing to do for money. emphasizes the need to ask questions and understand the prospect’s needs, then to use that information to present the benefits that will catch the buyer’s interest. Hopkins places constant emphasis is on prepared presentations, conscientiously planned. He analyzes basic needs, how to know product and prospect, who to sell, what to sell and what to tell; he lays out a program for a positive approach, ways in which to give a verbal picture, and how to stay away from argument and bluffing. With that said, Hopkins defines the most desirable attributes of the salesman; personal enthusiasm, self-confidence, understanding of people, belief in his product, and he concludes by outlining some approaches which apply to any sales problem. Nuff said.

Great for your first Hopkins book, too much review for seasoned Hopkins fans

I've been anticipating the release of this book when I saw it was being published, and as good as Tom Hopkins is (peerless, frankly, in my eyes) in the world of sales skills training, I was a little disappointed in this book.

I have read his classic, epic, bestselling and game-shifting "How to Master the Art of Selling", and I have a hard time turning anywhere else when I have questions or want to refresh on the basics. I am aware there are other sales trainers, but for my money (and the money I'll make!) Tom Hopkins is the gold-standard.

Some of his other books bear mention here: "Low Profile Selling" is fantastic, replete with scripts and language and good tips for how to approach the sales process without coming off as a pushy, greedy salesperson. His "Guide to Greatness in Sales" is another very good, very on-the-ground counsel for people who find themselves 6 months to five years in the business and are dealing with some of the requisite growing pains.

I also can't mention highly enough his 3-CD audio collection; I have relied on disc 2 (Advanced Survival Training) more than I ever thought I would and it kept me going when I was contemplating throwing in the towel.

One of the things, I think, that separates Tom Hopkins from the others is that he is selling the profession of selling to all of us, his students, in the best possible way. Demonstrating the principles he teaches, he paints vivid emotional pictures for us to imagine ourselves as successful salespeople, pictures that give us the desire to undergo the training to go out and win. It's brilliant.

So I came to the latest book with this deep respect for his teachings, and is perhaps why I was underwhelmed by the book. He surely does update some of his best material for the book, and tailor it in ways to the financial services industry, but much of what he says about sales in the financial services industry - such as that your prospects are nervous about making a big decision with their money, can they trust you with it, your company, etc.? - doesn't differ substantially from sales in other areas too: real estate, corporate purchasing, high-net worth products - anywhere, in fact, where a large purchase is made, so doesn't seem that this advice is tailored or only relevant to the financial services industry.

I suppose I was hoping for more script language, more specifically adapted material to financial services, but much of the book dwelt on fundamentals of any sales process - finessing the first impression, becoming referrable, etc - such that after all the exposure I've had to his teachings, I didn't find anything here that made me go "Wow, that's exactly right for my field!"

That said, if you are considering this as your first Tom Hopkins book, and you work in the financial services industry, I would say without a doubt that it is an excellent introduction to his teaching, and that once you read this you'd be well-served to visit the previously mentioned works too and mine them for all of their brilliance.

Updated version worth the money

I first bought "How to Master the Art of Selling" by Tom Hopkins in 1993 and then recently purchased the updated version because I am re-entering the world of sales and wanted to see how the author had updated/revised his approach.

In my opinion, Hopkins' strongest point is the attention to preparation. He outlines many specific scripts and strategies that are easily adapted to various situations. This is the best "how to" book I have come across.

While the fundamentals of selling are still basically the same (perserverence, follow-through, shameless self promotion etc.) the author did a nice job of bringing his approaches into the 21st century.

The book is well worth the money, both for the updates and the re-read.

The Cure at Troy yields a measured dose

Seamus Heaney's version of trials for the Greek archer entrusted with Hercules' infallible bow and arrows gives us affirmation and points of reflection. Heaney does not dash the ancient dialogue style on the rocky island; rather it is enriched for the modern reader. Honoring the timelessness of Sophocles, Heaney allows today's reader to make comparisons of private nature and choices with the public need and will. The hero, Achilles' son, Neoptolemus, finds that the strategy to take Troy for the Greeks runs counter to his nature of honesty and integrity. We wrestle with him over the choices. We tumble with him when he loses his grip. We crawl back to sure footing along side the hero. I found myself understanding the characters based on different experiences in my life. Philoctetes bemoans his ill-fated injury which leaves him abandoned and full of vengeance. Human empathy allows him to examine his tight grip on his woundedness without denying what he has endured. Odysseus, the pragmatic lieutenant of war, is shown for his utility and foibles. As in all Greek plays, the chorus calls the characters and the reader to reflection, "...For my part is the chorus, and the chorus is more or less a borderline between the you and the me and the it of it." Heaney got the "it of it" for us to take our own measure.

But Solomon commands the language--and his topic--with such grace and empathy that the constant flow of references, poems, and quotations in his paragraphs arrive like welcome dinner guests. Calling depression the "flaw of love," 2001 National Book Award-winner Solomon (A Stone Boat) brings a stunning breadth of research to this widely misunderstood and often stigmatized illness. At least 19 million Americans suffer from chronic depression, and Solomon concedes its diagnosis and treatment are as complex as the illness. The eloquent, cerebral prose distinguishing his book (the writing of which, he says, consumed his life for five years), is mirrored in Solomon's equally articulate and refined reading style, marked by traces of a crisp British accent and a consistent, soothing tone. While outlining the major treatments, Solomon's discussion covers brain chemistry, the classes of antidepressants and their possible effects and efficacy rates, as well as the successful resurgence of electroshock therapy, talk therapy, surgical options and alternative therapies (e.g., herbal, homeopathic and hypnosis). Some laypersons may find the audio format ill-adapted for this technical portion. In addition to the self-help and parental advice genres is the literary and philosophical study of depression that harks back to Richard Burton's The Anatomy of Melancholy. The Noonday Demon, based on an article that Solomon wrote for The New Yorker in 1998, is such a book. The backbone of this superb work is the author's narrative of his own struggles with severe depressionDhis musings on its multifarious causes and on the role that his privileged socioeconomic status has played in its successful management. Solomon also interviewed scores of other depression sufferers about their trials with treatment and visited Africa, Greenland, and Cambodia in search of different cultural perspectives. This journalistic approach allows Solomon to convey a great deal of information in the form of fascinating, if sometimes horrific, life stories. This compassionate work that never simplifies complex matters is essential for all collections.

A literary masterpiece about depression

This is a landmark work in the history of depression. Never before has anyone described the emotions felt during depression so elegantly. Andrew's literary skill makes each page of this book a pleasure to read. The Noonday Demon is not only well-written, it is also extremely informative. The author takes us on a journey through personal experiences, provides detailed descriptions of medications and side affects, and explores the efficacy of alternative treatments. In the second half of the book he goes on to describe depression in multiple contexts such as history and philosophy.
I have been a long time sufferer of depression and I have found hope in this book. It is a subject that I have long been ashamed to speak about outside of my therapist's office. Andrew works to remove the stigma behind this illness and bring all aspects of the disease to light. Depression has no cure, it something must be dealt with and treated on a daily basis. I find strength in the knowledge that so many others are successfully treating depression, even if they are not conquering it completely.
The Noonday Demon is a remarkable work that should be read and reread.

This book can save a life

The most immediately obvious strength of The Noonday Demon by Andrew Solomon is its supple, incisive, funny, harrowing prose. Its deepest strength is its probing examination of depression from many points of view--historical, clinical, cultural, political, evolutionary, and personal. With a novelist's gift for bringing people to life and a journalist's skill at explaining complicated topics, Solomon is always informative and profoundly humane. He makes the blurry boundaries and maddening complexities of the issues involved comprehensible while arguing persuasively that depression is an inescapable reality of the human condition. The book is highly original. He tells his personal story but widens it with movingly explored case histories and successfully sets these narratives in the context of thorough examinations of the many topics necessary to see the overall subject.
The Noonday Demon can set the agenda for an important national discussion. As it makes clear, depression touches all of us whether we ourselves suffer its terrible debilities, know someone who does, or live with (and are probably unaware of) its devastating results for our communities and workplaces. I thought I knew a lot about the topic; I found how much I needed to learn by reading this book. I was most impressed by how honestly Solomon deals with the fact that there are no easy answers to any aspect of the issue, even when he has strong opinions (and his personal point of view is always welcome in these pages: I liked knowing where he stood). No reader is likely to agree with everything he says, but no one will go away doubting the truth of his cri de coeur that as long as we misunderstand depression, people quite literally will die. Highly recommended for anyone who wishes to understand what depression feels like, what it is and is not, how it can be treated, and what happens when it is ignored.

A THOROUGH ANALYSIS OF DEPRESSION

Who, at least at one point in their life, has not been mildly depressed? As a counsellor, if you were to tell me that not once, ever in your entire life did you ever feel down or depressed, I would probably want to make sure you were still breathing. However, for many, depression can be a severe, chronic battle each and every day, and one of the biggest setbacks in an individual's life. It can be a family's nightmare, hinder careers and personal relationships, and play havoc with a person's self-image. For some, just getting up in the morning can take evey ounce of willpower. There have been many books written on depression, some are excellent self-help books, others ARE depressing to read. This book, however, is an insightful look inside depression in personal, scientific and cultural terms. The author also takes a look at the biological aspects of the disease which, for many, can be a controversial issue.
Solomon has battled depression for much of his life. Through his research and studies, he has gained valuable knowledge on the subject which he openly shares with his readers. Of the vast number of books written on depression, "Noonday Demon" is definitely one of the most complete, accurate and informative ones to be found. I also enjoyed his easy manner, occasional wit and positive approach to an affliction that for a multitude of individuals can be a disabling, life-long illness.
