In 1974, with the advent of court-ordered school busing in Boston, South Boston High School became the focal point of resistance to the mandated desegregation plan. From a diary she kept while an English teacher in "Southie" during the turbulent years between 1974 and 1977, Malloy presents an arresting insider's view and attempts, as well, to balance the public record. The cohesiveness within the factions of South Bostonboth the area's "greatest strength and greatest weakness"is dramatically conveyed in the violent, brutal confrontations between blacks and resistant whites as conciliators made efforts to implement the plan and police attempted to keep a fragile detente. Malloy recalls this sorry episode in Boston's history and its aftermath, and shows us the verbally and physically abusive daily incidents. Illustrations, excerpts from court testimony and statements of national figures supplement this readable journal. The author now teaches at Boston Latin School, the oldest public school in the U.S.

From Library Journal
Unlike Robert Dentler and Marvin Scott's Schools on Trial ( LJ 9/15/81), a defense of the Boston public school desegregation decision, or J. Anthony Lukas's Common Ground ( LJ 8/85), a journalistic perspective on Boston's violent reaction to busing, this is a teacher's personal account of life in the school that was the focal point of resistance to court-ordered busing in Boston. In diary entries written from 1974 to 1977, Malloy describes in chilling detail her reactions, as well as those of students, teachers, and administrators attempting to teach and learn amidst bloody racial confrontations inside and outside classrooms guarded by armed state police. Well-chosen pieces of student writing interspersed with newspaper clippings and court testimony highlight what it was like to work in a school under siege. A powerful work that belongs in all education and urban collections. Patricia Smith Butcher, Trenton State Coll. Lib., N.J.

The book chronicles the change of South Boston high from and all white school to an intergrated school. It is does so remaing unbiased to either side. It is remarkably enlightening and interesting to read. Since it is non-fiction it really captures the reader, making him or her not want to put the book down. Even knowing the story from real life, I found the inside point of view very interesting.
